Like many of more than one million people who receive home schooling in the United states, they feel as if theyve gotten a good education. The home-schooling trend began in the U. Sin the 1980s with parents keeping their children out of public schools so they could provide religious education at home. Today, as the home-schooling trend continues to grow, parents are more likely to consider home schooling as an option because they believe schools dont do a very good job of teaching and are occasionally dangerous places. But can parents really do a better job?The answer in many cases is yes. In many studies, students taught at home ranked average or above average when compared to students who went to public schools. More importantly, these students were often more self-directed and have a greater depth of knowledge. They are very well prepared for academic challenges, says Patricia Riordan, the dean of admissions at George Mason University. One such student, Robert Conrad, now a sophomore at university, claims he really learned how to study and schedule his time during his eight years of home schooling. Still, not every student is as successful as Robert. For every home-schooling success story, there are an equal number of failures, states Henry Lipscomb, an educational researcher. There are just so many disadvantages that students taught at home have to overcome. For example, they have fewer chances to interact with others of their own age. Consequently, they sometimes lack the usual social skills. No matter what, though, states Lipscomb, home-schooling is a growing trend. I think well be seeing more and more of this. 46Compared with other students, the most different thing Rowena and Billy do is thatAthey study hardBthey do extremely well on achievement testsCthey never go to schoolDthey feel they have gotten a good education47At first in the l980s parents gave homeschooling to children for Abetter educationBreligious educationCsafetyDall the above48According to the article, what is NOT the advantage of being educated at home?AHome is a safer place for children BStudents taught at home are more self-directed CStudents taught at home have a greater depth of knowledge DStudents taught at home can go to good universities 49The writer thinks Aparents can do a better job than schoolsBhomeschooling will be more and more usefulC students taught at home make greater achievementsDhomeschooling is good in some aspects50The best title of this text might be AHomeschooling:A Growing TrendBHomeschooling:A Better ChoiceCHomeschooling:A way to SuccessDHome-schooling:A New Method of EducationText 2For most of us, dieting is a frustrating fact of life, with so much conflicting nutritional information about, it can be difficult to tell which weight loss strategies rea3ly work. Let s start by discounting these confusing myths.1. All calories are created equalWhat you eat, not how much, is the. main factor behind weight gain, according to research .Calories from fat pack on the pounds. The reason: during digestion, the body burns many more calories metabolizing protein and carbohydrates than it does metabolizing fat.2. Desserts are tabooCakes, pies and ice cream can sensibly be worked into a diet, the expert says. Moderation is the key. Cut down on other meals if youll be eating out at a restaurant know for its rich sweets .or indulge, but lake only a few bites,3. Fast foods are forbiddenA plain hamburger on a bun is still a healthful choice. so is grilled chicken or a green salad with low-cal dressing. But watch out for French fries, milkshakes and batter-dipped chicken or fish.4. Fasting is the fastest dietSome studies suggest that drastically reducing calorie intake switches the body into a starvation mode, which conserves calories and decreases your metabolic rate. The more frequently you deprive yourself of food, the better your body may get at storing calories. so, in the long run, repeated fasting may actually undermine your weight-loss efforts.5. To keep weight off, simply watch what you eatAccording to the experts exercise combined with dieting ensures weight loss better than dieting alone does. Experts agree t sticking with regular, moderate exercise is more important that occasional vigorous workouts are. Obesity-researcher Kelly Brownell encourages patients to make a series of small physical efforts: taking the stairs instead of the elevator and parking the car far from where you are going and walking Most important , before getting caught up in dietary myths, let good sense shape your eatinghabits ,You body will thank you for it51It cannot be inferred from the first paragraph that Athe information about dieting is always contradictoryBthere ale too many weight-loss strategies to choose fromCdieting is always troublesome to most peopleDpeople should not believe the ideas of dieting52One of the elements to gain weight isAthe amount of the food you eatBover sleepingClazinessDthe kind of food you eat53Which of the following saying is true about dieting?AYou cant eat sweets BFast foods ale not good C You should not neglect any meals DFasting is always helpful 54The phrase“ starvation mode ”means Abeing very hungryBeating what you like when you ale hungryCweight-loss effortsDbeing ready to eat55The word“ shape” in the last sentence means一AbreakBformCget rid ofDchange Text 3crease in births or a falling birth rate. The age distribution of the population has several important influences on the economy, If the population is aging and there is an increase in the number of people retiring without a corresponding increase in the number entering the workforce, this raises the problem of the ability of the economy to provide a reasonable level of social services to the retired group, If the aged are to be cared for in special homes or hotels, finance must be available for that purpose. If the size of the workforce is small relative to the total population ,then the government tax receipts are relatively low and either the government has less money available to it or the workforce members have to be taxed more heavily.56Labor force is composed of一A people who are available to work and earn incomeB self employed people onlyC only those who are looking for an employmentDonly the employees57The factor which does NOT influence the size of the workforce is、 Athe size of populationBage distribution of the populationCnational economyDnatural increase58The conclusion which can be drawn the second paragraph is that Aa population growth from natural increase leads to a greater proportion of the work- forceBa large population does not necessarily mean a higher proportion of Cthe larger the number of the aged in a population, the higher the proportion of the workforceD if the population has all evenly spreaded age distribution, the workforce will be lower59When a population is said to be aging,Amore people are retiring than people entering the workforceBthe birth rate is growingCthere is all oversupply of workforceDyoung people outnumber old people60The population which is topheavy with older people poses a problem toAthe governmentBthe economyCthe workforceDall of the above Part BDirections: Read the texts from a book in which five people talked about climateFor questions 61 t0 65,match the name of each person(61 to 65)to one of the statements(A to G)givenbelowMark your answers on your ANSWER SHEET 1 Jennifer:The greenhouse effect might be causing the change, but its a cycle thats been tracked for about a hundred years and in the past 20 years or so it just stopped cyclingAnd this is only affecting a small part of the worldPeople talk about greenhouse effect because they want to show how
