More than just about of the blues or temporary feelings of grief or low energy, depression can have a significant impact on your enjoyment of life, your work, your health, and the people you care about.,How common is depression?,If you have symptoms of depression, you are not alone. In the USA, an estimated 15% of people will have depression at some point in life, and chances of becoming depressed are even higher for certain people.,15%,Women experience depression twice as often as men, although men are more likely to commit suicide(自杀) as a result of depression.,Separated or divorced individuals, especially men, are more likely than married people to become depressed.,People who have a serious illness are more likely to suffer from depression.,What causes depression?,Depression may be triggered by:Stressful life events Other illnesses Certain drugs or medicationsInherited traits,Dangerous or unsafe environment in familyBeing neglected(忽视)from closed one in early life Traumatic (惨痛的)experiences late in life One important cause is the loss of job Death of loved one Poor self-confidence Side effects(副作用)of some other medicine that lead to depressionHormonal(激素)changes always affect on mood that lead to depressionFrequently taking drug or alcohol,Other reasons:,Types of Depression,Major Depression(重性抑郁症)major depression is the combination(组合)of all symptoms that disturb the persons daily routine works, study, sleep, eating and enjoying habits. This depression appears only once but mostly occurs several times in a lifetime.,It is less severe type of depression.From this depression, people dont disable because it does not involve all symptoms.This type of depression keeps people from functioning well or from felling good.Many people who are in dysthymia depression feel like major depression afger some time.,Dysthymia Depression(心境抑郁),Bipolar disorder (躁郁症),It is also called as manic-depressive illness(狂躁抑郁症病).Bipolar disorder is characterized(特征)by cycling(循环)mood change dramatically (戏剧性的)and rapidly.The people in bipolar disorder feel like elated(兴高采烈的).,What are the symptoms?,depression,Think speak slowly,Despairworthlessness,Lose Interest enjoyment,Self-harmSelf-blameSuicide ideas,Lack energyfatigability,Disturbed sleep Poor appetite,Common symptoms include:,Feelings of guilt and hopelessness; wondering if life is worth living (common).Preoccupation with thoughts of death or suicide.Poor memory.Complaints that have no physical cause (somatic complaints) such as headache and stomachache.Problems concentrating.Difficulty making decisions.,Now situation,These days, depression is no longer a difficult topic to talk about.It is gradually accepted by the world . This could be the reason more people seek help and information from their family doctor, psychologist, ora trusted confidante.,Most people state they do not have a certain event or tragedy that caused them to feel sad. Depression normally creeps up slowly, and before you know it , there is a loss of joy in the things and activities you once enjoyed.,There is a sense of sadness and withdrawal from other people. These feelings make it difficult for most people to seek treatment.,How is it treated?,Depression is usually treated successfully with professional counseling or antidepressant medication.
