She created almost two hundred dance pieces. She is often called the Mother of Modern Dance.Earlier in her life, however, Martha did not know that she would become a dancer. At that time, the dancers were looked down on. So Marthas parents didnt approve of her desire to dance at the beginning. Until 1916, she began her studies at the newly created Denishawn School of Dancing and Related Arts, founded by Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn, where Graham worked very hard to improve her ability to dance because she was considered too old to begin dancing. In 1936, Graham made her defining work, “Chronicle”, which was the symbol of the beginning of a new era (纪元) in modern dance. The dance brought serious issues to the stage for the general public in a dramatic manner.Graham continued to dance past the age of seventy. Once again, she was met with criticism (批评) from people who came to watch her shows. But she didnt give up. Her last completed ballet (芭蕾舞) was 1990s “Maple Leaf Rag”. A Dancers World is an introduction to Graham and her work. She tells about her dances and her dance group shows some of their methods.Martha Graham received many awards during her lifetime, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in nineteen seventysix. She was the first dancer to receive the countrys highest civilian honor. She died in 1991 at the age of ninetysix. In 1998, Time magazine listed her as the “Dancer of the Century” and as one of the most important people of the twentieth century. 24Some famous artists are mentioned in Paragraph 1 to show Martha Graham _.Awas influenced greatly by themBkept in touch with them regularlyChad a great effect on modern danceDliked to make more friends with them答案:C推理判断题。 C。25When Martha Graham continued to dance in her 70s, she _.Awas warmly welcomed by the youthBachieved huge success once againCreceived many awards for her ageDwas spoken of in different ways by people答案:D细节理解题。 D。26The text is mainly about _.Athe background of modern dance in AmericaBthe development of modern dance in AmericaCMartha Graham and her achievements in danceDthe awards Martha Graham won in her life答案:C主旨大意题。 C。CIs It Bad to Cross Your Legs When You Sit?Crossing your legs is an extremely common habit; most people dont even notice that theyre doing it when they sit down. While you may find it comfortable to sit with one knee crossed over the other, it might be causing health problems that you are not aware of.A study published in Blood Pressure Monitoring shows that sitting with your legs crossed can increase your blood pressure (血压). The reason this happens is that the blood in your legs has to work against gravity to come back to your heart, crossing one leg over the other increases resistance, making it even harder for the blood to go around. This causes your body to increase your blood pressure to push the blood back to the heart. You wont feel any immediate effects, but if you sit for long periods of time its important that you take note of how long you have your legs crossed for. You shouldnt have your legs crossed for more than 15 minutes, and its important that you get up and walk around at least once every hour.Crossing your legs can also lead to neck and back pain. Ideally, its best for our bodies to sit with our feet placed flat, hip (臀部) width apart, on the floor, but its not easy to maintain perfect posture all day at the office. When you sit with your legs crossed, your hips are in a twisted (扭曲的) position, which can cause one of your pelvic bones (髋骨) to rotate. Since your pelvic bone supports your neck and spine, this can cause pressure on your lower and middle back and neck. You also might notice that when you sit with your legs crossed for long periods of time your feet and legs get tingly or have the feeling of being asleep. This is because when one leg sits on top of the other it causes pressure on the veins and nerves in your legs and feet. It can cause numbness (麻木) and/or temporary paralysis in the legs, ankles, or feet. While the feeling of discomfort may only last a minute or two, repeatedly crossing your legs until they feel numb can cause permanent nerve damage. So next time you sit down, try to get yourself in the habit of sitting with both of your feet on the floor. Not only will it help your posture and stability, but it will also save your health in the long run. 27According to Paragraph 2, we can infer that _.Aits no big deal to cross our legs for less than 15 minutesBwe will feel uncomfortable at the moment we cross the legsCwe should take a walk every hour after sitting stillDcrossing legs while sitting makes it harder for our blood to circulate答案:D细节理解题。根据第二段中的“crossing one leg over the other increases resistance, making it even harder for the blood to go around”可知,跷二郎腿使血液循环更加困难,故选D。28How many health problems can be caused by crossing legs according to the text?A2.
