Is Money EverythingTodays world is putting a disproportionate emphasis on material wealth. The criteria of success used to be multiple but no longer. Almost everyone now considers possessing a big fortune the only criterion of success. Is such outlook justified? I doubt it. Why? Most important of all, the ultimate goal of all is to be happy and success is meant to bring us happiness. However, money, as we all know, is not necessarily related to happiness. So why should we hail someone rich but gloomy as a successful person? Moreover, there are always those who are committed to noble yet unprofitable causes(事业), like Confucius in ancient time and Lei Fen in the recent past. They were not wealthy, but few would dispute that they were highly successful. In effect, they were among the most distinguished and honorable figures in our history. So, clearly, money is not everything. A rich man is not equal to a successful man.Looking at Our World PositivelyOurs is a changing and increasingly complicated world. What our generation is experiencing, all those opportunities and challenges, would be totally unexpected and undreamt of to previous ones. In the face of such a new world, peoples reactions differ considerably. Some tend to focus on the negative aspects: environmental pollution, energy crisis, foul language online, and disintegration of traditional values, etc. In their eyes, todays world is definitely declining and falling. The truth is that these folks fail to see the bigger and whole picture. Indeed, we face some serious problems, like world-wide contamination, shortage of fuel and high rates of divorce. But these headaches are actually nothing new: they are as old as the hills. First, the ancients, while free from industrial and chemical pollution, had difficulty acquiring water as clean as that we drink today. Human and animal wastes(粪便) used to be a common source of pollution. In addition, because there was little oil or gas, life in the distant past was so inconvenient that a main job of man was to collect wood or animal waste as fuel. Finally, as to divorce, I am convinced that it is in effect a mirror of social progress. Can you imagine having to live together with someone you no longer love and even hate? And will you persist in tolerating recurring and even savage domestic violence? Meanwhile, we modern men have achieved so much that none from the ancient world could resist the temptation of joining us if he came back to life. Much more folks enjoy longer life, most of us are well fed and the majority receive education. Traveling is really fun while in the past they said: “It is well to be at home for ever but difficult to be out traveling even for a day”. Would you hesitate if you were asked to choose between the past and the present? The Way College Students Spend Money Most college students spend roughly two thirds of their money on food and clothing each month. As for the way they spend the rest one third, however, the students differ considerably. Some invest heavily in study materials and extracurricular reading. Some others, by contrast, spend a lot on entertainment. Evidently, the former are more concerned about their future and intend to be better equipped for the days that lie ahead while the latter focus on deriving pleasure from the present. In my case, I have approximately 500 Yuan at my disposal each month: 300 from my parents and 200 from my part-time job as a private tutor. After consumption on food and clothing, there is usually 200 Yuan or so left. I use half this sum to buy books and reference materials because I plan to take the graduate school admission tests after my four-year college study. “Opportunities only favor those prepared minds.” has always been my motto (座右铭). 致大一新生,建议如何适应大学生活。Dear friends:Congratulations to you on your admission to the university and welcome to join us. From this day forward, you will spend the bulk of (大部分) your future four years here. The faster you adapt yourself to campus, the better you will get on with your life in the few years ahead. I would like to offer you some of my ideas on adjusting to college life quickly. First, get yourself acquainted with those around you and try to make friends with them. There are a number of societies and clubs on campus, like the English Club and the Society of Chinese Literature. Find the one you are interested in and apply for membership. Friends made in such a way will have a lot in common and the friendship will endure. Second, develop a habit of regular exercise. College life can be stressful. To survive and thrive, you need to have a robust health. Those role models of successful students have all demonstrated this point. If the above tips can be of any service to you, I would be very much honored (荣幸). Certificate Rush (证书热)On todays college campus, there appears a new phenomenon: the craze for certificates. Students are crazy about proving themselves with the papers related to CET-4, CET-6, Computer Proficiency Band One and so on. These young folks seem fascinated. But to be fascinated, sometimes, is also to be blind. Some have taken this pursuit to extremes. These certificates, in their eyes, will greatly improve their job prospects. In consequence, they spare no effort to acquire them all. They take all the exams, attend all the coaching courses and pay all the money. But is this practice justifiable? Hardly. It is true that some certificates are necessary, but others are just a waste of time and money. For example, to most employers, a Computer Proficiency Band One certificate is sufficient while a considerable number of students wont stop their pursuit until the Band Two qualifications are obtained. They tend to neglect a vital fact that among the values most cherished by employers, certificates are not to be found. Evidently, students need to think it over about this certificate rush. It is time that they laid more stress on cultivating their practical abilities. What Can I Do for Them? There happened a terrifying earthquake in the province of Sichuan a couple of weeks ago. The result was disastrous: thousands lost their lives, and millions became homeless. This is not just something happening there it is a matter of national survival. Naturally, almost everyone wants to rush to help those stricken by the disaster. From my perspective, I think those affected need psychological comfort as well as material aids. First of all, the disaster destroyed their home and property. To go on with living, some sum of money is an absolute must. Equally important is spiritual encouragement. Having got frightened, injured, and even seen the beloved ones die, those unfortunate folks indeed have too much to bear themselves. Sympathy and comfort on the part of us might make life easier for them. United We StandThis is a most unlucky year for us Chinese. First, the snowstorm, then the earthquake, and now the torrential rain. But we still stand. And we are determined to make a success of the coming Olympics, for the whole nation is united as one before all these difficulties, however overwhelming they be. With solidarity, we can conquer whatever hardships we encounter. The Chinese people have undergone worse situations and we always manage to survive and thrive. When one part of the population is in trouble, all quarters will rush to their help. With the donations, voluntary work and psychological comfort offered by folks from all over the country, those unfortunate people can always weather those hard times. This time, I am convinced, will be no exception. What Can I Do for the OlympicsThe Olympics is just around the corner. Its a historic event the Chinese people have been dreaming of for years. We common citizens have every obligation to help the government to make a huge success of the Games.Everyone is making contribution in his way. As for me, I am of the opinion that the following has to be done. First, if necessary, we should tolerate some inconveniences and even make some sacrifices. For example, the torch relay route covers most provincial capitals of the country. To ensure the success of the relay, some special measures have to be taken, like traffic control, which may bring about inconveniences to some of us. At such times, understanding on the part of those affected will be precious. Second, as host of the Olympic Games, we will witness the arrival of foreigners in great numbers. The way we behave will impress them as the way of the nation. In view of this, we all need to do some self-examination and perhaps do some changes in our daily behavior. No one will want foreigners to say that the Chinese people are ill-mannered, small-minded or uncivilized. Netizens LanguageThe term netizen is nowhere to be found in most dictionaries published before the 1990s it is a coined word deriving from “net” and “citizen”. More such examples: 2nite meaning tonight, b4 meaning before, gtg meaning got to go. Some feel uncomfortable seeing these made-up phrases. Some others even argue that such expressions may pose a threat to our language. If I were to make comments, I would say that this is perfectly normal. First, languages were invented by people. If our ancestors could, why cant their offspring? The truth is that languages were anything but what they are. They have always been changed and enriched. Second, languages are meant to communicate ideas. If some coined words can be more expressive than those currently used, the public may take to them and consequently, they will become part of everyones language. If their function is found to be limited, they are bound to fall into disuse. Evidently, words have their own rule of “the fittest survive”. So, just let it be. The 80s and 90s GenerationThe 80s and 90s generation has become an issue today. Some associate them with words like selfish, dependent, and indulgent in merry-making. Some others, however, perceive them as passionate, confident and intelligent. If I were to make comments, I would say that both arguments carry some weight. First, the majority of these youngsters are the
