Basic English Reading I: Course Description & SyllabusCourse title: Basic English Reading IInstructor : Jiang ChunlanObjectives:1. The purpose of the course is to help students to improve their integrated skills on learning English. This course is to give freshman a thorough understanding of the importance and ways of mastering the 5 English Skills.Purposes for Basic English:- listening- speaking- reading- writing- translatingStudents will be expected to keep a vocabulary log. They will also be expected to make full use of English-English dictionaries or bilingual dictionaries.2. Goala) GeneralTo begin to understand and use correctly the basic elements of reading in English including:- Work towards fluency in learning English by enhancing skills, or linguistic processing abilities e.g. word recognition, syntactic processing- Students to move from bottom-up process of reading to an incorporation of both bottom-up and to-down processing. Interactive models will also be used for word recognition.- Students to learn vocabulary and grammar related to the texts- Students to read actively- Students to participate in pre-reading and post-reading activities- Review of various grammatical forms, including nouns countable and non countable, tenses and others as neededb) Language StrategiesTo learn and start to use the following language strategies:- Previewing- Use of English-English dictionaries or bilingual dictionaries- Scan to find information- Understand implied ideas in readings- Understand the writing style- Skimming to understand the main facts- Use of background knowledge to help you understand a reading- Finding topic sentences of paragraphs to understand the main idea- Learn paraphrasingc) Academic Power StrategiesTo learn and start to use the following academic power strategies:- Make a study plan- Goal setting- Practice what you have learnt to connect reading with life- Study in groups / pairs- Learn how to write a book reportFormatThe classes will adopt a learner-centered approach:- Teachers role is to coach and facilitate- Teaching and assessing are intertwined- Assessment is used to promote and diagnose learningClasses will involve:- Participatory style lessons- Practical reading: individuals, pairs and groups- Pair and group work- Discussion activities, both oral and written- Introduction / review of vocabulary, grammar, language learning strategies and academic power strategiesStudents responsibilities:- To preview all lessons prior to attending class- To use an English-English dictionary to check unknown vocabulary- To participate actively in exercises in class- To keep a Vocabulary Log of all new words and write their own sentences of the new words- To know, understand, learn and use language learning strategies- To know, understand, learn and use academic power strategies- To participate willingly and actively in the pre-reading, reading and post-reading activities involving class work, homework and peer correction. - To participate actively in all class activities, as listed in (1) above including all class discussions and brainstorming activities.Text Books: Contemporary College English, Yang Limin, Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press. 2010Reference: A New English Course, Li Guanyi, Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, 1999.Other photocopies of appropriate material from a variety of sources will be given out as and when needed.Requirements: Individual Work for the semester: - Book report. Students are required to read a book they are interested in, and find a view they would like to talk about. Then write a book report. They will hand in before the semester.- Students are provided four essays. Listen to them first, and then read aloud, finally learn by heart. The four essays are: Youth; Life is a chess board; The Doer of deed and Three passions (What I lived for)Group Work: Presentation or Role Play. Students are divided into several groups to finish the Role Play (for example, Unit 3) and do the PPT presentation ( for example, Unit 2)Grading PolicyMid-term Exam 20%Final Exam 50%Attendance and Participation: 30%PoliciesAttendance: Missed classes must be made up and the reason reported together with a sick note with Chinese name in both characters and pinyin together with student number and date. A missed class will lose scores towards the Class Score. Moreover, if the student has 4 times of absent, the final score is F.Homework: must be delivered on time. English Only: No Chinese is allowed in English Class.Dictionary and Electronics: English-English dictionaries are preferred.
