bridge the gap between Process Control theory and industrial practice for Chemical Engineers A process dynamics and control training simulator LOOP PRO TRAINER has been incorporated in the Chemical Engineering curriculum at Rose Hulman Institute of Technology for more than 20 years successfully imparting industrially relevant skills to students The training simulator integrates seamlessly with all elements of the Chemical Engineering curriculum where Process Control concepts are addressed such as introductory courses advanced project based courses and Unit Operations laboratory courses The use of LOOP PRO TRAINER in associate degree and continuing education programs is also discussed Keywords Process control training simulator Process control education Practical process control 1 INTRODUCTION Simulation technologies have proven to be highly effective educational tools Process Control is especially well suited for this application Cooper and Dougherty 2000 Marlin 1996 Industrial practice of Process Control is computer based and in many situations when the control room is physically isolated from the process floor the only connection between the control engineer and the manufacturing process is the graphical user interface GUI For more than 15 years there has been an on going discussion of whether the technical skills imparted to undergraduate engineering students in universities are relevant to the industrial practice of Process Control Many control professionals agree that there is a growing gap between what is taught and what is practiced in industry Shinskey 2002 Alford 2006 Cook and Samad 2009 Process Control theory is typically presented to students through the abstraction of the transfer function and quite frequently the hands on exercises presented to students involve expansions of the mathematical developments introduced in their textbook It is not uncommon for students to refer to the Process Control course as Applied Mathematics The main mission of universities is to offer a broad based education in the fundamentals and therefore the mathematics of Process Control is an important component of the course At the same time universities have an obligation to provide education that is relevant to the industries they serve In the context of Process Control bridging the gap between theory and practice comes down to connecting the abstraction of transfer functions to the operation of real processes with PID control loops In the Chemical Engineering curricula the Unit Operations UO laboratory is well recognized as the place where theory and practice come together However due to equipment and time limitations not every student in the class especially for large classes will have a comprehensive Process Control experience in the UO lab A training simulator offers an alternative whereby all students can be provided with realistic comprehensive hands on practical Process Control exercises In this paper we present the incorporation of LOOP PRO TRAINER Control Station Inc Manchester CT USA in the Chemical Engineering curriculum at Rose Hulman Institute of Technology LOOP PRO TRAINER is integrated not only in the Process Control courses but in the UO laboratory as well The use of LOOP PRO TRAINER has enabled us to impart industrially relevant Process Control skills to our students and better prepare them for industrial practice It is not the intent of this paper to show that computer simulations are preferred over physical experiments In fact we believe that experiments are a fundamental part of the educational process In contrast computer simulations offer the benefits of accessibility and speed They allow all students in the class no matter how large the class is to quickly generate results and experiment with a variety of different control strategies that are commonly used in industry 2 LOOP PRO TRAINER LOOP PRO TRAINER is a direct descendent of one of the first simulation software programs specifically for Process Control education developed in the late 1980 s by Professor Douglas Cooper from the University of Connecticut Storrs 12th IFAC Symposium on Advances in Case Studies Module The Case Studies module contains 16 pre built simulations of common industrial non linear processes Both integrating non self regulating and non integrating self regulating processes are included All simulations are first principles and provide students with access to authentic process behaviour The GUI has the feel of an operator station on a modern distributed control system In addition to the process graphics Figs 1 3 students can view in real time a trend of the process history data They can also record process history data for subsequent analysis in the Design
