was white black strips Soon the clothes she wore were all made by herself Other girls at school loved her designs too They asked her if they could buy dresses from her Zoe sold her first dress for 13 most cool headed and good tempered drivers to resist the temptation to take revenge 报复 on uncivilized behavior On the other hand a litde politeness goes a long way towards reducing the tensions of driving A friendly nod or a wave of acknowledgement in response to an act of politeness helps to create an atmosphere of goodwill and tolerance so necessary in modem traffic conditions But such acknowledgements of politeness are all too rare today Many drivers nowadays don t even seem able to recognize politeness when they see it However misplaced politeness can be dangerous Typical examples are the driver who brakes violently to allow a car to come out of a side street at some danger to following traffic or the man who waves a child across a zebra crossing into the path of oncoming vehicles that may be unable to stop in time The same goes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and whenever they like to It always amazes me that the highways are not covered with the dead bodies of these grannies An experienced driver whose manners are fauldess told me it would help if motorists learnt to move correcdy into traffic streams one at a time without causing the total blockages that give rise to bad temper Unfortunately modem motorists can t even leam to drive let alone master the less obvious points of roadmanship Years ago the experts warned us that an explosion in car ownership would demand a lot more give and take from all road users It s high time for all of us to take this message to heart 60 According to the passage the role of politeness is A resisting the temptation to take revenge on uncivilized behavior B reducing the tensions of driving C responding to a friendly nod or wave of acknowledgement D Both A and B 61 By good sense in the first paragraph the writer means A the driver s ability to understand politeness and react reasonably B die driver s immediate response to difficult and severe conditions C the driver s tolerance of bad or even rude behavior D the driver s acknowledgement to politeness and regulations 62 Which of the following is NOT misplaced politeness A The driver lets old ladies cross the road when they want to B The driver responds to an act of politeness in a friendly way C The driver suddenly stops to permet a car to come from a side street at some danger to following traffic D The driver waves a child across a zebra crossing into the path of oncoming vehicles that may be unable to stop in time 63 In the writer s opinion A strict traffic regulations are badly needed B drivers should apply road existence of a sixth sense for danger a new research from Washington University in St Louis has discovered a brain area that clearly acts as an early warning system and helps us adjust our behavior to avoid dangerous situations Our brains are better at picking up not obvious warning signs than we previously thought said Joshua Brown a PhD in psychology in the issue of the journal Science The findings offer exact scientific evidence for a new way to form a concept of the complex control processes taking place in and around the ACC a brain area located near the top of the frontal lobes 耳垂 and along the walls that divide the left and right hemispheres 大脑 半球 In the past we found activity in the ACC when people had to make a difficult decision or after they make a mistake Brown said But now we find that this brain area can actually learn to recognize when you might make a mistake even before a difficult decision has to be made So the ACC appears to act as an early warning system it learns to warn us in advance when our behavior might lead to a negative outcome so that we can be more careful and avoid making a mistake By providing a clearer picture by which we self monitor and control our behavior the study is an important step in efforts to develop more effective treatments for mental illnesses It also provides a new way of understanding inappropriate behaviors that often accompany mental illnesses Our results suggest how injury of the ACC can lead to breakdowns in the early warning system so that the brain fails to stop or control inappropriate behavior ahead of time said Brown On the other hand in those persons with mental disorder the ACC might warn us of an upcoming problem even when no problem is in the existence Known to be an important part of the brain s control system the ACC is believed to help adjust between cold hard fact based reasoning and emotional responses such as love fear or expectation 68 According to the passage the ACC A refers to the sixth sense for danger B deals with obvious warning situations C connects the left and right hemispheres D sends warning messages in advance 69 The new research is beneficial because it A provides a new way of avoiding mistakes B adjusts emotional responses in time of danger C helps find better treatments for mental illnesses D assists people in predicting and avoiding danger 70 The new research helps us understand A why we are likely to make mistakes when the ACC is badly injured B why people with illnesses usually have so many strange behaviors C how the ACC works when something dangerous happens D how our brain warns us of failure in advance 第二节 共 5 小题 每小题 2 分 满分 10 分 阅读短文内容 从短文后的选项中选出能填人空白处的最佳选项 选项中有两项为多余选 项 It is never too late to add some new and better practices into your daily
