Sleep is necessary for good health. During this time, the body recovers from the activities of the previous day. The rest that you get while sleeping makes it possible for your body to prepare itself for the next day. There are four levels of sleep, each being a little deeper than the one before. As you sleep, your body relaxes little by little. Your heart beats more slowly, and your brain slows down. After you reach the fourth level, your body shifts back and forth from one level of sleep to the other. Although your mind slows down, you will dream from time to time. Scientists who study sleep point out that when you are dreaming, your eyeballs begin to move more quickly (although your eyelids are closed). This stage of sleep is called REM, which stands for rapid eye movement. If you have trouble falling asleep, some people suggest breathing very slowly and very deeply. Other people believe that drinking warm milk will make you drowsy. There is also an old suggestion that counting sheep will put you to sleep.1. If someone asked Cinderella, “Are there any kinds of household work that you particularly hate?” She probably would answer , “Why , none , of course. Housework is my duty!” In the real world, however, most people have certain dislikes for some kinds of household work. Two of these tasks are ironing(熨)clothes and washing dishes. Ironing clothes is most hated because it is not a task that can be completed quickly or thoughtlessly. Each piece of clothing must be handled(处理)separately, so ironing a basket of them can take hours! If you do not follow directions carefully, it might become wrinkled(起皱纹) and you have to start over. Perhaps that is why ironing is not a favorite thing to do. It calls for extreme attention to detail from beginning to end. Another household job that many people dislike is washing dishes. Of course, some people claim that this work is no longer a problem because , we have dishwashers now! However, no one would argue that dishes, silverware(银器), and especially pots and pans washed in a dishwasher dont come out as clean as they do when washed by hand. For this reason, many of us continue to wash our dishes. And it is a job that not only takes a lot of energy but also requires the patience to wash and dry them. In addition, unlike ironing clothes, washing dishes is a thing that usually must be done every day. I dont know how Cinderella felt about this particular task, but I believe that most people hate it as much as I do.4. For Cinderella, doing household work is _. A. what she hates to do B. what she is responsible for C. what she loves to do D. what she is content with5. Most people hate to do clothes-ironing because _. A. it takes a lot of time B. it has to be done by one person C. it must be handled skillfully D. it needs careful planning6. Many people still prefer washing dishes by hand to machine washing because _. A. hand washed dishes are cleaner B. dishwashers are not so easily handled C. some dishes cannot be washed by machine D. washing dishes by hand is cheaper7. Ironing is different from washing dishes in that _. A. it requires patience B. it is not a daily housework C. it is not tiring D. it needs less care CNorm Pethrick, a 36-year-old man in Australias northern city Darwin, was praised on Thursday for jumping onto a crocodiles (鳄鱼)back to save his wife Wendy at Litchfield National Park, a popular tourist spot southwest of Darwin, a local newspaper reported. Mrs Pethrick was standing on a river bank Wednesday afternoon when the saltwater crocodile lunged (扑), locking its jaws on both her legs as it tried to drag her underwater. Norm Pethrick, who with his wife had been collecting water, immediately went to help her. He jumped onto the back, poked (戳) the eyes of the crocodile and finally got his wife free. Mrs Pethrick was later taken to Royal Darwin Hospital (RDH) for a medical treatment. The doctors said she was suffering eight wounds (伤口) in her right leg, a wound in her left leg and a serious cut to one of her fingers. “This could have been a fatal(致命的) and tragic(悲剧的) situation,” said the general manager of Royal Darwin Hospital, Dr Len Notaras, according to a local report. He said Mrs Pethrick was saved by her husbands “quick and diligent actions”. Dr Notaras also said she would remain in hospital for three to four days and have an operation to clean the wounds, which are easy to get infected because of bacteria (细菌) on the teeth of the crocodile.8. This passage is most likely to be found in _. A. a travel guide B. a newspaper C. a textbook D. a novel9. The crocodile attacked Mrs. Pethrick when she was _. Now a research by Cornell University suggests how life style and decisions about eating may affect weight. Researchers concluded that the French tend to stop eating when they feel full. However, Americans tend to stop when their plate is empty or their favorite TV show is over. According to Dr. Joseph Mercola, a health expert, the French see eating as an important part of their life style. They enjoy food and therefore spend a fairly long time at the table, while Americans see eating as something to be squeezed between the other daily activities. Mercola believes Americans lose the ability to sense when they are actually full. So they keep eating long after the French would have stopped. In addition, he points out that Americans drive to huge supermarkets to buy canned and frozen foods for the week. The French, instead, tend to shop daily, walking to small shops and farmers markets where they have a choice of fresh fruits, vegetables, and eggs as well as high-quality meats for each meal. After a visit to the United States, Mireille Guiliano, author of French Women Dont Get Fat, decided to write about the importance of knowing when to stop rather than suggesting how to avoid food. Today she continues to stay slim and rarely goes to the gym. In spite of all these differences, evidence shows that recent life style changes may be affecting French eating habits. Today the rate of obesity (肥胖)or extreme overweight among adults is only 6%. However, as American fast food gains acceptance and the young reject older traditions, the obesity rate among French children has reached 17% and is growing.12. In what way are the French different from Americans according to Dr. Joseph Mercola?A. They go shopping at supermarkets more frequently. B. They squeeze eating between the other daily activities.C. They regard eating as a key part of their lifestyles.D. They usually eat too much canned and frozen food.13. This text is mainly the relationship between _.A. Smiling helps stay positive.D. Smiling defeats diseases.E. Smiling attracts people.F. Smiling relieves stress. 16 . Like a flower with a pleasant scent, your smile can draw people close enough to see inside you. Thats Smile Power. A smile has the power to radiate(显示) the qualities that make you beautiful on the inside - kindness, friendship, honesty, respect, patience, and self-control. So please give smiles away like flowers. Let your smile be an invitation for others to get to know the great person behind the smile. Then let people see that your smile doesnt stop at your mouth. It goes all the way to your heart. On the other hand, we are drawn to people who smile and we want to know a smiling person and figure out what is so good. Frowns(皱眉), scowls(怒视) and grimaces(做鬼脸) all push people awaybut a smile draws them in. 17 .Next time you are feeling down, try putting on a smile. Theres a good chance you mood will change for the better. Smiling can trick the body into helping you to have good feelings. So smile is a good state of mind, you have a smile, then you will have better feelings. So when you are smiling you lighten up the room, change the moods of others, and make things happier. 18 .The muscles we use to smile lift the face, making a person appear younger. Put on a smile at meetings and appointments and people will react to you differently because of your confidence. 19 Stress can really show up in our faces. Smiling helps to prevent us from looking tired, worn down, and overwhelmed(势不可挡的). When you are stressed, take time to put on a smile. This is because when you smile, there is a measurable(可预见的) reduction in your blood pressure. You can sit for a few minutes, take a reading. Then smile for a minute and take another reading while still smiling. You will be happy to see your stress disappears quickly. 20 Now try to think of something negative without losing the smile. Its hard. When we smile our body is sending the rest of us a message that Life is Good! Stay away from depression, stress and worry by smiling.
