For the majority of us, its other peoplesociety, colleagues, friends, family or our religious community. We learned this way of operating when we were very young, of course. We were brainwashed. We discovered that feeling important and feeling accepted was a nice experience and so we learned to do everything we could to make other people like us. As Oscar Wilde puts it, “Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone elses opinions, their lives a mimicry(模仿), their passions a quotation.”So when people tell us how wonderful we are, it makes us feel good. We long for this good feeling like a drug. Therefore, we are so eager for the approval of others that we live unhappy and limited lives, failing to do the things we really want to. Just as drug addicts and alcoholics live worsened lives to keep getting their fix (一剂毒品). We worsen our own existence to get our own constant fix of approval. But, just as with any drug, there is a price to pay. The price of the approval drug is freedomthe freedom to be ourselves. The truth is that we cannot control what other people think. People have their own agenda, and they come with their own baggage and, in the end, theyre more interested in themselves than in you. Furthermore, if we try to live by the opinions of others, we will build our life on sinking sand. Everyone has a different way of thinking, and people change their opinions all the time. The person who tries to please everyone will only end up getting exhausted and probably pleasing no one in the process. So how can we take back control? I think theres only one waymake a conscious decision to stop caring what other people think. We should guide ourselves by means of a set of values-not values imposed(强加)from the outside by others, but innate values which come from within. If we are driven by these values and not by the changing opinions and value systems of others, we will live a more authentic, effective, purposeful and happy life.4What Oscar Wilde says implies that _.A. most peoples thoughts are controlled by othersB. most people have a variety of thoughtsC. we have thoughts similar to those of othersD. other peoples thoughts are more important5What does the author try to argue in the third paragraph ?A. We need to pay for what we want to get.B. Changing opinions may cost us our freedom.C. We may lose ourselves to please others.D. The price of taking drugs is freedom.6In order to live a happy, effective and purposeful life, we should _.A. care about others opinions and change opinions all the timeB. guide ourselves by means of values from the outsideC. stick to our own valuesD. persuade others to accept our opinions7It can be concluded from the passage that _.A. its important to accept others opinionsB. its better to do what we likeC. we shouldnt change our own opinionsD. we shouldnt care what others think too muchCAs popular as they are globally, selfie sticks (自拍杆) are being asked to stay away from more places. Now the Palace Museum has become cautious about the device (设备), too.Museums take the leadOut of safety concern, a number of museums took the lead earlier this year to ban selfie sticks in order to protect their artworks and visitors. Several major museums in other countries have said “no” to the device, including the Romes Colosseum, the Smithsonian museums in Washington and the National Portrait Gallery in the UK. More Chinese museums are joining the international trend as well, for example, the Nanjing Museum, which took the step last week.Although the Palace Museum has not issued an official ban, the museums administration has recently warned visitors to be more careful with the device. If the device is used in crowded place or narrow area, the staff is likely to walk up and stop it. Selfie sticks are also advised to stay outside the exhibition area in the museum, as the stretchable (可伸缩的) device can be disturbing to other visitors and dangerous to the museum objects. It is still a question whether sefie sticks will be challenged in more casual occasions like amusement parks, but the Tokyo Disneyland officially bans the use of selfie stick inside the theme park area. The voicesThe Louvre museum in Paris has not yet banned selfie sticks, but an action is expected to be announced in a few weeks. A leader of the museum told a foreign media his vexation: More visitors are waving the devices high in the air, and some of them are only few centimeters away from the famous original Mona Lisa.“Museum photos are good for spreading the cultural messages, but we should pay attention to our ways,” said Cao Wei, a famous Sina Weibo blogger. “I support the museums actions on the selfie stick ban.”8. Why have lots of museums banned visitors from using selfie sticks?A. Because they are illegal devices.B. Because they may cause unsafety problems.C. Because they may do harm to visitors health.D. Because they have been forbidden in other occasions.9. What does the underlined word “vexation” mean in the passage?A. purpose. B. concern.C. determination. D. assumption.10. In the Palace Museum, visitors _.A. are never seen using selfie sticksB. are forbidden to use selfie sticksC. are warned to be careful with selfie sticksD. are allowed to use selfie sticks only in exhibition area11. In Cao Weis view, _.A. visitors shouldnt get close to the artworksB. the ban on selfie stick is necessaryC. visitors shouldnt take photos in the museumD. selfie sticks should be banned on more casual occasionsDIt seems hard to watch someone yawn(打哈欠) and not to yawn ourselves. Even reading about yawning can make you do it. Now, a new study has found why yawning has such a powerful force. Yawning when others yawn, the study suggests, is a sign of pity and a form of social connection. Kids dont develop this deeply rooted behavior until around age four, the study found. Kids with autism (自闭症) are less likely to catch yawns. In the most serious cases, they never do. Yawning might help doctors to see whether the children are developing rightly. The work could also lead to a better understanding of the ways that people communicate and connect. “Emotional infection seems to be a born thing that connects us together,” said Molly Helt, a graduate student in psychology at the University of Connecticut. “Yawning may be part of that.” Inspiration for her study came when she tried to get her own autistic son to clear his ears on an airplane. She repeatedly yawned at him, hoping he would yawn back. He never did. “The fact that autistic kids dont do it might mean theyre really missing out on that emotional connection with people around them, ” she said. “The biggest thing people try to figure out after birth is how we become humans and understand that humans have minds that are different from others, she added. Autistic people never seem to understand that.” Like infectious(有感染力的)laughter and crying, scientists have found that yawning is a shared experience that promotes social connection. Helt said it could fight stress after a period of being nervous and spread a feeling of calm through a group.12. According to the first two paragraphs, what does the new study suggest? A. Yawning is a form of communication. B. It is easy to stop yawning when you see others yawn.C. Children follow others in yawning just after they are born. D. Yawning has some mysterious force which is related to God.13. According to Molly Helt, _. A. humans differ from animals because they communicate with others B. yawning is a kind of emotional connection among humansC. emotions are infectious, but yawning is not D. yawning helps clear ears on planes14. Which of the following is NOT true about yawning? A. It is natural to yawn back if people around you yawn. B. Some kids are too young to yawn after others.C. Yawning can be used to test childrens development. D. Kids with autism yawn easily when others yawn. 15. The author implies in the last paragraph that _.A. yawning can make people feel relaxed B. it is bad manners to yawn on some social occasionsC. the more you yawn, the happier you will be D. yawning is different from infectious laughter and crying in theory 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中的两项为多余选项。How to Improve Vocabulary FastYour vocabulary refers to the words in a language you are familiar with. We should learn some ways to expand it.Read every day. 16 Choose reading material that is slightly above your level and keep a dictionary with you to look up words you do not know. 17 If you do not meet with an unfamiliar word in your daily reading, use your dictionary to search for one. Learn the correct definition and pronunciation for each new word. Pronunciation is as important as definition because in order to add a word to your active vocabulary, you must be able to use it in speech. Elaborate(阐释)on the meaning of the word. Use imagery and personal relevance. If you have just learned the word “stubborn”, think about the neighbor who will not lend you his car. 18 Use your new word in speech and in writing. E-mail your sister about how your cat is stubborn about sleeping on your pillow. 19 But the more you use it, the more fluent you will become in its use. Soon it will be a regular part of your active vocabulary.Tell everyone you are trying to increase your vocabulary. Encourage them to ask you what your latest word is. 20 The more you explain the meaning of a word to someone, the more likely you are to remember it.A. Find a new word every day.B. The vocabulary can be increased.C. Your vocabulary contains the words you understand.D. The more often you read, the faster your vocabulary can grow.E. Or let them ask for the definition of a new word you have used.F. Imagine him shaking his head, and think of him as “stubborn in his refusal”.G.
