Peanuts to ThisProudly reading my words, I glanced around the room, only to find my classmates bearing big smiles on their faces and tears in their eyes. Confused, I glanced toward my stonefaced teacher. Having no choice, I slowly raised the report I had slaved over, hoping to hide myself. “What could be causing everyone to act this way?”Quickly, I flashed back to the day Miss Lancelot gave me the task. This was the first real task I received in my new school. It seemed simple: go on the Internet and find information about a man named George Washington. Since my idea of history came from an ancient teacher in my home country, I had never heard of that name before. As I searched the name of this fellow, it became evident that there were two people bearing the same name who looked completely different! One invented hundreds of uses for peanuts, while the other led some sort of army across America. I stared at the screen, wondering which one my teacher meant. I called my grandfather for a golden piece of advice: flip(掷)a coin. Headsthe commander, and tailsthe peanuts guy. Ah! Tails,my report would be about the great man who invented peanut butter, George Washington Carver.Weeks later, standing before this unfriendly mass, I was totally lost. Oh well, I lowered the paper and sat down at my desk, burning to find out what I had done wrong. As a classmate began his report, it all became clear,“My report is on George Washington, the man who started the American Revolution.” The whole world became quiet! How could I know that she meant that George Washington?Obviously, my grade was awful. Heartbroken but fearless, I decided to turn this around. I talked to Miss Lancelot, but she insisted: No redos; no new grade. I felt that the punishment was not justified, and I believed I deserved a second chance. Consequently, I threw myself heartily into my work for the rest of the school year. Ten months later, that chance unfolded as I found myself sitting in the headmasters office with my grandfather, now having an entirely different conversation. I smiled and flashed back to the embarrassing moment at the beginning of the year as the headmaster informed me of my opinion to skip the sixth grade. Justice is sweet!1What did the authors classmates think about his report?AControversial. BRidiculous. CBoring. DPuzzling.2Why was the author confused about the task?AHe was unfamiliar with American history.BHe followed the advice and flipped a coin.CHe forgot his teachers instruction.DHe was new at the school.3The underlined word“burning”in Para. 3 probably means _.Aannoyed Bashamed Cready Deager4In the end, the author turned things around _.Aby redoing his task Bthrough his own effortsCwith the help of his grandfather Dunder the guidance of his headmaster【要点综述】本文讲述了作者作为一个外来移民初入美国学校时,由于对美国历史不了解而闹出的一个笑话,但作者通过努力最后终于提高成绩并实现跳级。1. “bearing big smiles on their faces and tears in their eyes.” 根据第二段“Since my idea of history came from an ancient teacher in my home country”可知,作者是从别的国家初到美国,所以对美国历史不了解而闹了笑话。3. 第三段中“I was totally lost.” 根据第四段“Consequently, I threw myself heartily into my work for the rest of the school year.” These are some ideas that some people came up with about what the life will be like in the year 2500:We will have established a base on the moon.School kids can take field trips to the moon weekly. We will have found cures(疗法)for AIDS and cancer. The war will have ended and peace flows freely through the land.Kids will learn more and be smarter than ever before! You just walk up to a machine, stick out your tongue, and it will scan your taste buds(味蕾)to see what you want to eat.KristenHere I am in the wonderful year of 2500 and life is so easy.I work in a pet store and it is so hard! I have to wake up at midnight every day and fly my ear to the store. It takes so long to get there. It takes me 20 seconds to get to the store in Mississippi from my home in Florida! At work,I have to push 5 buttons and then I go home.It takes 2 seconds and that is like forever.MorganIn the year 2500,I think we will have invented cars that run on things we dont need like garbage.Tail gas will smell like whatever you like such as chocolate.I also predict that buildings will be able to go into a different dimension(维)so your car wont hit them. The cars in 2500 dont fly,for we havent got that technology yet,but they can hover(盘旋)up to seven feet. These cars are made for speed! CarlyInstead of cars,we may have hovering devices that float around. We could also have electric cars instead of gas powered cars.Food might be more healthy. What I believe is that the environment will change the most. The environmental changes will also determine many other changes. If more people try to help the environment, then perhaps in 2500 we will have more forests and wildlife. If people wont help the environment, then we will have no forests and little wildlife left Roberta1According to Kristen, what will happen in 2500?AEnglish will be the main subject at school.BStudents can go to the moon every week.CCafeteria will replace other restaurants.DAIDS and cancer will disappear. School kids can take field trips to the moon weekly. 2The underlined word“scan”in the text could be replaced by“_”Achange BtreatCexamine Dimprove答案:C猜测词义题。 3Morgan thinks his work in the pet store is_.Adifficult BmeaninglessCimportant Deasy答案:D推理判断题。 4Who mainly tells the reader of the cars in 2500? Tang poetry is part of precious cultural heritage of Chinese civilizationCTang poetry cant be translated into EnglishDTang poetry can only be accepted by people from China答案:B根据文章第一段第一句话.it is a precious cultural heritage of Chinese civilization in ancient time可知,唐诗是中国古代文明的珍贵的文化遗产,是中华文化的组成部分。2The features of Tang poetry different from other languages are the following EXCEPT_.Abeautiful sound Brich wordsCabundant form Dextensive sense答案:B根据文章第二段内容中所提到的与英语不同的特点有sound,form和sense,文章中没有提到word。 3Chinese is tone language while English is_.Aintonation languageBtone languageCalphabetic writingDideographic language答案:A根据文章第二段第五句话English is intonation language while Chinese is tone language可知,汉语是语音文字而英语则是语调文字。 4The attitude towards translating Tang poetry into other languages is_.Aappositive BfavorableCironic Dpassive答案:B根据文章最后一句话talking about the untranslatability of Tang poems in English translation is not against the translation work of Tang poems but for the better translations of them. CThe following simple exercise routine works as well as prescription medication(药物治疗)-without the side effects A jog a day could keep your headaches at bay: Regular cardio workouts(有氧锻炼) may prevent migraines(偏头痛), a growing body of research suggests.Migraine patients had fewer headaches after doing 40-minute cycling workouts three times a week for three months, according to a Swedish study. The exercise routine worked just as well as one of the top migraine-preventing drugs topamirate but without the side effects of depression and tremors(刺激).Cardio workouts can help with regular headaches, too, says Alexander Mauskop, M.D., director of the New York Headache Center in Manhattan. There are a couple of theories on how it works.Breaking a sweat may relieve stress, says Dr. Mauskop. Headaches are often triggered by stress, and if you remove the trigger, you release the pain. The feel-good chemicals produced when you exercise actually block your pain sensors, acting as a natural painkiller.Since headaches can be caused by many different factors like genetics(遗传), lack of sleep, or certain foods, cardio wont be the solution for everyone, Dr. Mauskop says. But one German study found that it helped 65 percent of patientswhich makes it as effective as the best medicines on the market.Dr. Mauskop recommends his patients do a half-hour reasonable intensity (强度)cardio, like jogging, biking, or swimming three times a week. These workouts are meant to be slow and steady, as opposed to high-intensity intervals that alternate between all-out runs and rest.Pushing yourself too much or increasing the intensity too quickly can trigger headaches in some people, so make sure your heart rate doesnt jump above 150 BPM. If you dont have a heart rate monitor, then breathe only through your nose. Youll know youre going too hard if you cant keep up that breathing pattern.Your migraines could start disappearing in a couple of weeks, Dr. Mauskop says. 1. According to the passage, the author may agree that_. A. jogging, swimming and fishing are cardio workoutsB. neither cardio workouts nor topamirate has side effects C. migraine patients can be cured by regular cardio workouts D. cardio workouts will be the solution for everyone with migraines2. The underlined word “triggered” in Paragraph 7 can be replaced by _. A. cured B. released C. caused D. monitored3. The feel-good chemicals produced can help with regular headaches because_.A. it eases the stress B. it breaks a sweatC. it prevents migrainesD. it blocks your pain sensors 4. What would be the best title? A. A cure for headacheB. Side effects of migraineC. The causes of headacheD. It should become hot. In cold weather we sometimes rub our hands together to make them warm. The rubbing of two together which causes heat is called “friction”(摩擦力). In the same way, people who lived in caves rubbed a piece of wood shaped like a pencil on another piece of wood with dried leaves or grass packed nearby. The heat set the leaves or grass alight. This was a difficult way of making fire. Better ways were found by using flint(火石), but it was not until 1827 that the first matches were made in England.Chemists made up a mixture and put it on an end of a stick or match. The mixture contained a small amount of phosphorous(磷), a chemical that bursts into flame when heated slightly. The other chemicals then caught fire and burned less fiercely until the wood was alight. By rubbing the end of the match on sandpaper, the friction easily set the phosphorous alight. These first matches could also be struck on other rough surfaces, including the leather sole(底)of a shoe.At
