湖南桑植县2017高考英语一轮阅读理解选编(四)阅读理解。Sports shoes that out whether their owner has enough exercise to warrant time in front of the television have been devised in the UK. The shoesnamed Square Eyescontain an electronic pressure sensor and a tiny computer chip to record how many steps the wearer has taken in a day. A wireless transmitter passes the information to a receiver connected to a television, and this decides how much evening viewing time the wearer deserves, based on the days efforts. The design was inspired by a desire to fight against the rapidly ballooning waistlines among British teenagers, says Gillian Swan, who developed Square Eyes as a final year design project at Brunel University to London, UK. “We looked at current issues and childhood overweight really stood out,” she says. “And I wanted to tackle that with my design.” Once a child has used up their daily allowance gained through exercise, the television automatically switches off. And further time in front of the TV can only be earned through more steps. Swan calculated how exercise should translate to television time using the recommended daily amounts of both. Health experts suggest that a child take 12,000 steps each day and watch no more than two hours of television. So, every 100 steps recorded by the Square Eyes shoes equals precisely one minute of TV time. Existing pedometers (计步器) normally clip onto a belt or slip into a pocket and keep count of steps by measuring sudden movement. Swan says these can be easily tricked into recording steps through shaking. But her shoe has been built to be harder for lazy teenagers to cheat. “It is possible, but it would be a lot of effort,” she says. “That was one of my main design considerations.” ( ) 1. According to Swan, the purpose of her design project is to _. A. keep a record of the steps of the wearer B. deal with overweight among teenagers C. enable children to resist the temptation of TV D. prevent children from being tricked by TV programs ( ) 2. Which of the following is true of Square Eyes shoes? A. They regulate a childs evening TV viewing time. B. They determine a childs daily pocket money. C. They have raised the hot issue of overweight. D. They contain information of the receiver. ( ) 3. What is stressed by health experts in their suggestion? A. The exact number of steps to be taken. B. The precise number of hours spent on TV. C. A. makes it difficult for lazy teenagers to cheat B. counts the wearers steps through shaking C. records the sudden movement of the wearer D. sends teenagers health data to the receiver ( ) 5. Which of the following would be the best title for the text? A. Smart Shoes Decide on Television Time B. Smart Shoes Guarantee More Exercise C. Smart Shoes Measure Time of Exercise D. Up until now, I had been old enough to dress myself, but today I would need some help. Miss Finlayson, my kindergarten teacher, had been through first snow days many times, but I think she may still remember this one. I managed to get into my wool snow trousers. But I struggled with my jacket because it didnt fit well. It was a hand-me-down from my brother, and it made me wonder why I had to wear his ugly clothes. At least my hat and scarf were mine, and they were quite pretty. Finally it was time to have Miss Finlayson help me with my boots (靴子). In her calm, motherly voice she said, “By the end of winter, you will all be able to put on your own boots.” I didnt realize at the time that this was more a statement of hope than of confidence (信心). I handed her my boots and stuck out my foot. Like most children, I expected grown-ups to do all the work. After much pushing, she managed to get the first one into place and then, with a sigh, worked the second one on too. I announced, “Theyre on the wrong feet.” She struggled to get the boots off and went through the joyless task of putting them on again.Theyre my brothers boots, you know, “ I said. “I hate them!” Somehow, from long years of practice, she managed to act as though I wasnt an annoying (烦人的)little girl. She pushed and pushed, less gently this time. With a greater sigh, seeing the end of her struggle with me, she asked, “Now, where are your mittens (连指手套)?”I looked into her eyes and said, “I didnt want to lose them, so I hid them in the toes of my boots.” 1. The little girl was more satisfied with her.A. trousersB. jacketC. bootsD. hat2. Miss Finlayson had difficulty with the girls boots mainly because.A. the girl got them from her brother B. the girl put something in themC. they were on the wrong feet D. they did not fit the girl well3. Why does the author say Miss Finlayson would remember that first snow day? A. Because the little girl was in her brothers clothes. B. Because it was the most exciting day of the winter.C. Because the little girl played a trick on her.D. Because the little girl wore a pretty scarf.4. We can learn from the text that Miss Finlayson.A. was losing confidence in the little girl B. gradually lost patience with the little girlC. became disappointed with the little girl D. was getting bored with the little girl【参考答案】1-4 、DBCB阅读理解-(B)Pacing and Pausing Sara tried to befriend her old friend Steves new wife, but Betty never seemed to have anything to say. While Sara felt Betty didnt hold up her end of the conversation, Betty complained to Steve that Sara never gave her a chance to talk. The problem had to do with expectations about pacing and pausing. /gaokao/beijing Conversation is a turn-taking game. When our habits are similar, theres no problem. But if our habits are different, you may start to talk before Im finished or fail to take your turn when Im finished. Thats what was happening with Betty and Sara. It may not be coincidental that Betty, who expected relatively longer pauses between turns, is British, and Sara, who expected relatively shorter pauses, is American. Betty often felt interrupted by Sara. But Betty herself became an interrupter and found herself doing most of the talking when she met a visitor from Finland. And Sara had a hard time cutting in on some speakers from Latin America or Israel. /gaokao/beijing The general phenomenon, then, is that the small conversation techniques, like pacing and pausing, lead people to draw conclusions not about conversational style but about personality and abilities. These habitual differences are often the basis for dangerous stereotyping (思维定式). And these social phenomena can have very personal consequences. For example, a woman from the southwestern part of the US went to live in an eastern city to take up a job in personnel. When the Personnel Department got together for meetings, she kept searching for the right time to break in-and never found it. Although back home she was considered outgoing and confident, in Washington she was viewed as shy and retiring. When she was evaluated at the end of the year, she was told to take a training course because of her inability to speak up. Thats why slight differences in conversational style-tiny little things like microseconds of pause-can have a great effect on ones life. The result in this case was a judgment of psychological problems-even in the mind of the woman herself, who really wondered what was wrong with her and registered for assertiveness training.( ) 1. What did Sara think of Betty when talking with her? A. Betty was talkative. B. Betty was an interrupter. C. Betty did not take her turn. /gaokao/beijing D. Betty paid no attention to Sara.( ) 2. According to the passage, who are likely to expect the shortest pauses between turns? A. Americans. B. Israelis. C. The British. D. The Finns.( ) 3. We can learn from the passage that _ A. communication breakdown results from short pauses and fast pacingB. women are unfavorably stereotyped in eastern cities of the US C. ones inability to speak up is culturally determined sometimesD. one should receive training to build up ones confidence( ) 4. The underlined word assertiveness in the last paragraph probably means _ A. being willing to speak ones mindB. being able to increase ones powerC. being ready to make ones own judgment /gaokao/beijing D. being quick to express ones ideas confidently64.C细节题,难题。难在弄不清谁是S谁是B,耐心读,动笔划,从第一段得出正确答案并不难:Sara felt Betty didnt hold up her end of the conversation65.B细节排序题,难题。 Sydney J. Harris accompanied his friend George to his favorite newsstand. George greeted the man selling the newspapers politely, but in return he received rude service. He just acknowledged his customer and never even looked up at him when he requested the late night edition. Accepting the newspaper, George politely smiled and wished the newsman a pleasant weekend. The owner made an indiscernible(难识别的) sound and seemed relieved that the two men had completed their dealing. As the two friends walked down the street, Sydney J. Harris asked, “Does he always treat you so rudely?” “Yes, unfortunately, he does,” George responded. “And are you always so kind and friendly to him?” “Yes, I am!” George continued as they turned a corner. “Why are you so nice when hes so unfriendly to you?” With a look of deep thought, George explained, “Because I dont want him to decide how Im going to act.”Who decides how youre going to act? Is it your circumstances(环境) or the difficult people in your life that determine your responses? When we allow our conflicts to control us, we behave as though getting rid of our predicaments (处境) is our only choice
