Test Three Part I Reading Comprehension 2 20 40 Directions There are four passages in this section Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements For each of them there are four choices marked A B C and D You should decide which the best answer is and mark the corresponding letter on the answer sheet Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage People cry when they feel very sad They cry when something terrible happens like a death in the family They cry when they feel very sad or very angry They cry when they know they can t do anything about a problem and they feel helpless People also cry when they feel very good They cry when they have been very worried about something but find out everything is all right They cry when something wonderful happens In the United States until lately men were not supposed to cry Crying was weak and only for women Men were supposed to be strong But things are changing Men are beginning to realize that it is all right to show their feelings Women are learning that sometimes they can do something about a problem instead of just crying They try not to cry in a public place or in front of a frightened child Chemists have been studying why people cry They say the body produces two kinds of tears One kind cleaned out the eyes if it gets dirty in it But when people cry because of their feelings these tears have poison chemicals in them The body is getting rid of chemicals produced by strong feelings In the United States men have heart disease more often than women do Doctors say heart disease and some other diseases are related to the pressures of living and working in a modern society Perhaps men suffer more from these diseases because they do not cry enough And it is possible that as more and more women work outside the home they will also suffer from more pressure Then everyone will need to cry more 1 People cry when they feel sad and A when they feel good B when they see a death C when they fail to control themselves D when they want to show their feelings 2 Not until recently A did men realize the importance of crying B did men being to cry C were men supposed to cry D were men supposed to be strong 3 Things are changing now because A men are supposed to cry B women are not supposed to cry C men are liked to cry if they can not do anything about a problem D women are learning not to D chemicals produced by tears are poisonous 5 Heart disease is related to A the pressures of a modern society B male workers C female workers D those working in factories Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage Who takes care of the elderly in the United States today The fact is that family members provide over 80 of the care that elderly people need Most times the elderly live in their own homes A very small percent of America s elderly live in nursing homes Samuel Preston a sociologist at the University of Pennsylvania studied how the American family is changing He reported that by the time the average American couple reaches 40 years of age their parents are usually still alive This statistic shows the change in lifestyles and responsibilities of aging Americans The average middle aged couple can look forward to caring for elderly parents sometime after their own children have grown up Moreover because people today live longer after an illness than people did years ago family members must provide long term care These facts also mean that after caregivers provide for their elderly parents who will eventually die they will be old and may require care too When they do their spouses will probably take care of them because they have had fewer children than their parents did Because Americans are living longer than ever more social workers have begun to study ways of care giving to improve care of the elderly They have found that all caregivers share a common characteristic They believe that they are the best people for the job The social workers have also discovered three basic reasons why the caregivers take on the responsibility of caring for an elderly dependent relative Many caregivers believe they had an obligation to help their relatives Some think that helping others makes them feel more useful Others hope that by helping someone now they will deserve care when they become old and dependent 6 Samuel Preston s study shows that A lifestyles and responsibilities of the elderly are changing B most American couples over 40 have no living parents C elderly people may need care for a long time because they live longer after an illness D middle aged Americans have to take care of their children and parents at the same time 7 Who will most probably take care of the middle aged Americans when they need care themselves A after their relatives A They want to set an example to their children B They think it is their duty to help their relatives C They hope they deserve care when they need it D They feel they are of use to other people 10 What is the main idea of the passage A Most old people live longer today after an illness than people did years ago B Most elderly people are taken care of by their families who assume the responsibility for different reasons C Most elderly people are satisfied with the better ways of care giving that social workers have come up with D Many old people are put into nursing homes by their families who do not visit them regularly Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage Trials are taking place in North America and Europe to test an electronic device which will prevent children from watching unsuitable programs on television The device known as a V chip the v stands for violence allows parents to control their television set so that programs which are unsuitable for children cannot be watched on a particular television The V chip works by using an electronic code When a program is broadcast the signal from the television transmitter carries a code which indicates the level of sex and or violence in a particular program The V chip inside the television then examines the code for each program and blocks transmission of those programs which contain certain codes Makers of the V chip say that parents can be confident that their children will not be able to watch those programs which they decide are unsuitable V chip technology has attracted a lot of interest President Clinton passed a law last year which will require all new televisions to be fitted with V chips by 1998 And the European Parliament 欧洲议会 has included the V chip in its new Directive on Broadcasting But critics say that the system will not be fool proof and that children will find ways of getting around it There are also concerns that foreign satellite television companies may not abide by the rules Others say that if viewers come to rely on the V chip other controls on program content may start to be relaxed 11 According to the passage V chip technology enables parents to A turn off the television when they are not home B test electronic devices that can take the place of the TV set C keep inappropriate TV programs away from their children
