arrived in the next village He was just able to give his name and address By the time be was seven Johnny used to disappear from home two to three times a year Sometimes he covered quite long distances on foot Sometimes he got on a bus or even a train and simply sat there until someone asked for his ticket Generally the police brought him home Why do you do it they used to ask I just like seeing places Johnny told them Johnny continued to see places although everyone tried to stop him His parents used to watch him closely and so did his teachers but sooner or later Johnny managed to slip away As he grew older his favorite trick was to hide on a long distance truck Sometimes he traveled hundreds of miles before anyone discovered him It is hardly surprising that eventually Johnny managed to board a plane He was twelve at the time It was a cargo plane and a few hours later Johnny found himself in Cairo How did he get on board No one knows According to Johnny himself it was easy he just went into the airport walked along some passages and got on board the nearest plane In spite of all this Johnny did well at school He enjoyed mathematics and languages and perhaps not surprisingly he was especially good at geography What do you want to be when you grow up his teachers asked him An explorer he answered But it s difficult to become an explorer in this modern age they tried to tell him But it was no use Johnny knew what he wanted Just before he left school Johnny saw a notice in a daily paper A long journey was about to go to Brazil to travel up the Amazon River There were jobs for three young people willing to work hard and with a sense of adventure Johnny applied and two months later he was on his way to Brazil 21 Johnny frequently left home because A he sense of adventure C Johnny went exploring along the Amazon River D Johnny went to Brazil two months after he finished school 5 B Sitting on the peaceful coast of Galapagos Islands Ecuador watching the sun move quietly into the sea you shouldn t forget that Charles Darwin 1809 1882 arrived here in 1835 He stayed on the islands for five weeks observing various animals This finally inspired 启发 his famous work On the Origin of Species You can certainly follow Darwin s footsteps and enjoy a trip from four to seven days to the islands The most well known animals of the Galapagos is the giant tortoise 巨型海龟 which can be seen moving slowly around the highlands of Santa Cruz the second largest island in the archipelago 群岛 Some of these creatures are so old that they might have been in their youth by Darwin himself Despite strict control over activities and timing your stay on the Galapagos will be remembered as a chain of incomparable pictures diving with sea lions that swim and play within inches of you feeling small sharks touch your feet as you swim and most magically seeing a whale and her baby surface with a great breath of air Travelling between the islands and observing the wildlife that so inspired Darwin so you will feel as though you are getting a special view of an untouched world At night you will sleep on board the ship leaving the wildlife in complete occupation of the islands which are as undisturbed now as they have been since the beginning of time 24 What do we know about Darwin s visit to the islands A He studied different creatures on the islands B He completed his famous book on the islands C He was touched by the geography of the islands D He was attracted by well known animals of the islands 25 Which of the following plays a role in making the islands a paradise for wildlife A Animals on the islands feed on grass B Local government forbids killing wildlife C People cannot visit the islands as they wish D Tourists are not allowed to touch the animals 26 Your stay on the islands will be most impressive mainly because of A the beautiful sea viewsB Darwin s inspiring trip C a closer view of animalsD various daring activities 27 Which of the following would be the best title for the passage A A Unique Attraction for Wildlife LoversB Galapagos as a Paradise for Adventures C Charles Darwin as a Symbol of GalapagosD A Successful Example of Wildlife Protection 6 C Marco Polo in the 13th century talked about the singing sands which he considered to be caused by evil desert spirits Yes certain sand dunes 沙丘 will sometimes let out a loud low sound that lasts up to 15 minutes and can be heard up to 6 miles away Bruno Andreotti and his team went to the Atlantic Sahara in Morocco studying one of the largest dunes which naturally sings all year long sometimes two or three times an afternoon if windy enough Wind forces sand to gather at the top of the dune until the slope reaches a point of about 35 degrees The avalanche 崩塌 of sand lets out the noise The sand must be dry enough for the singing to occur Although sand avalanches were known to be the cause of the singing the exact mechanism was still unclear By measuring vibrations 振动 in the sand and air Andreotti found surface waves on the sand that came from the avalanche at a speed of about 130 feet per second In this way the face of the dune acts like a huge loudspeaker with the waves on the surface letting out the sound in the air Andreotti explained these sand waves as resulting from collisions 碰撞 that occur between grains at about 100 times per second In a kind of feedback the waves happen at the collisions so they are all on basically the same beat This model explains the low sound between 95 and 105 Hertz of the sand song which sounds a drum or a low flying plane The feedback mechanism also correctly predicts the maximum loudness of the singing to be 105 decibels at which point the sand grains vibrate off the surface The mystery is not completely solved Recent research has centered on a seemingly magical musical property 特性 of the singing grains It is not known for example why the sliding of glass balls is silent while some rougher sand grains let out a sound 28 From the first paragraph we know that A Marco Polo knew how the singing sands formed B there may be many sand spirits in the deserts C the singing sands existed from old times D some people played musical instruments in the deserts 29 One factor causing the sand to sing is that A the avalanche of sand lets out the noise because of the dry climate B the sand is so dry that it is very easy to cause avalanche and make a sound C sand can automatically make a sound without any reason D people make the dune pile so high that it causes a sound of avalanche 30 Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage A Sand avalanches make sand and air vibrate to produce the sound 7 B Sand avalanches don t happen until the slope reaches about 35 degrees C Different waves can be let out when sand avalanches happen D Scientists can t find out the real cause of the sand singing 31 What s the best title for the passage A Mysterious NatureB The Singing Dunes C A New ModelD An Old Mystery D Electric cars are dirty In fact not only are they dirty they might even be more dirty than their gasoline powered cousins People in California love to talk about zero emission 零排放 vehicles but people in California seem to be clueless about where electricity comes from Power plants most or all use fire to make it Apart from the few people who have their roofs covered with solar cells we get our electricity from generators 发电机 Generators are fueled by something usually coal oil but also by heat generated in nuclear power plants There are a few wind farms and geothermal 地热的 plants as well but by far we get electricity mainly by burning something In other words those zero emission cars are likely coal burning cars Because the coal is burned somewhere else it looks clean It is not true It s as if the California Greens are covering their eyes If I can t see it it s not happening Gasoline is an incredibly efficient way to power a vehicle a gallon of gas has a lot of energy in it But when you take that gas or another fuel and first use it to make electricity you waste a nice part of that energy mostly in the form of wasted heat at the generator through the transmission lines etc A gallon of gas may drive your car 25 miles But the electricity you get from that gallon of gas won t get you nearly as far so electric cars burn more fuel than gasoline powered ones If our electricity came mostly from wind or geothermal energy or solar energy then an electric car truly would be clean But for political technical and economic reasons we don t use much of those energy sources In addition electric cars batteries which are poisonous for a long time will eventually end up in a landfill And finally when cars are the polluters the pollution is spread across all the roads When it s a power plant though all the junk is in one place Nature is very good at cleaning up when things are not too concentrated but it takes a lot longer when all the garbage is in one spot 32 What s the main idea of the passage A Electric cars aren t actually clean B Electric cars are zero emission vehicles C Zero emission vehicles are popular D Gasoline powered cars are more efficient 33 Which of the following words can replace be clueless about in Paragraph 2 A be familiar withB be curious about C fail to understandD show their interest in 8 34 The electricity we get from a gallon of gas may make our car run A at least 25 milesB more than 25 miles C as far as 25 milesD less than 25 miles 35 It can be inferred from the passage that A electric cars batteries are poisonous for a long time B now electric cars are used more than their gasoline powered cousins C zero emission vehicles should be chosen to protect our environment D electric cars are not clean in that we get electricity mainly by burning something 第二节 共第二节 共 5 小题 每小题小题 每小题 2 分 满分分 满分 10 分 分 根据短文内容 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项 选项中有两项为多余选项 What I Think of Boxing as a Sport Boxing is a popular sport Newspapers magazines and sports programmes on TV frequently cover boxing matches It could be the toughest of all sports to survive It takes boxers hours in the gym and years to develop the specific characteristics needed to be a great boxer 36 It seems to me that some people especially men find it appealing because it is an aggressive sport When they watch a boxing match they can identify with the winning boxer This gives them the feeling of being a winner themselves 37 They do that because the boxer comes from their own country and if their boxer loses they often feel as if they have lost a fight themselves It is a fact that many people have feelings of aggression from time to time but they cannot show their aggression in their everyday lives Watching a boxing match gives them a way of expressing it 38 Although boxers wear gloves during the fights and amateur boxers even have to wear helmets a kind of strong hard hat there have frequently been accidents in both professional and amateur boxing sometimes with dramatic consequences Boxers have suffered from head injuries and occasionally fighters have even been killed as a result of being knocked out in the ring 39 They are usually in the form of serious brain damage even if a boxer has never been knocked out To conclude I am personally not at all in favor of aggressive sports like boxing 40 We can celebrate more men and women from non aggressive sports as our heroes in our society I believe that the world is aggressive enough already Of course people like competitive sports and so do I but I think that hitting other people in an aggressive way is not something that should be regarded as a sport A However boxing can be a very dangerous sport B Sometimes fans are rooting for a particular boxer C In boxing fighters are required to hit a moving target 9 D Many fans are drawn to the sport because they love the competition E Perhaps that is the reason why successful boxers are treated as big heroes F I think it would be better if less time was given to aggressive sports on TV G Besides studies have shown that there are often long term effects of boxing 第三部分 英语知识运用 共两节 满分第三部分 英语知识运用 共两节 满分 45 分 分 第一节完形填空 conditions Some believe the 41 inside many houses may be more dangerous than the air outside It may be one hundred times 42 Indoor air pollution can 43 a person to feel tired to suffer eye pain headache and other 44 Some pollutants can cause breathing disorders diseases of blood and 45 cancer Most scientists agree that every modern house has some kind of 46 pollution People pay more 47 to the problem now It is that when builders began making 48 and offices they did not want to waste energy To do this they built buildings that limited the flow of air between inside and outside They also began 49 man made building materials These 50 are now known to let out harmful gases 51 the problem became more serious scientists began searching for a 52 to deal with it They discovered a natural pollution control system 53 building green plants Scientists don t really know 54 control air pollution They believe that a plant s leaves absorb or 55 pollutants In 56 the plant let out oxygen through its leaves and tiny organization on its roots Scientists 57 that all buildings should have one large plant or several small plants inside every nine square meters of space 58 of different plants show that each absorbs different chemicals So the most effective way to 59 the air is to use different kinds of plants Having green plants inside your house can make it a prettier and more 60
