like that on our own planet They reason this in the following way 用心 爱心 专心 2 As far as astronomers can determine the entire universe is built of the same matter They have no reason to doubt that matter behaves in the same way in every part of the universe Therefore it is reasonable to guess that other stars with their own planets were born in the same way as our own solar system What we know of life on Earth suggests that life will arise wherever the proper conditions exist Life requires the right amount and kind of atmosphere This eliminates 排除 all those planets in the universe that are not about the same size and weight as the Earth A smaller planet would lose its atmosphere a larger one would hold too much of it Life also requires a steady supply of heat and light This eliminates double stars or stars that flare up suddenly Only single stars that are steady sources of heat and light like our sun would qualify 合格 Finally life could evolve 进化 only if the planet is just the right distance from its sun With a weaker sun than our own the planet would have to be closer to it With a stronger sun it would have to be farther away If we suppose that every star in the universe has a family of planets then how many planets might support life First eliminate those stars that are not like our sun Next eliminate most of their planets they are not the same size and weight as the Earth Finally remember that the proper conditions do not necessarily mean that life actually does exist on a planet It may not have begun yet or it may have already died out This process of elimination seems to leave very few planets on which earthlike life might be found However even if life could exist on only one planet in a million there are so many billions of planets that this would still leave a vast number on which life could exist 1 Which of the following statements is NOT true A The planet must be as big and heavy as the earth B Proper conditions are essential to the existence of life C Double stars can provide steady light and heat D The distance between a planet and its sun should be right 2 The existence of life depends on all EXCEPT A the right amount of atmosphere B our own solar system C steady heat and light D the right distance from its sun 3 Astronomers believe that matter in different parts of the universe A has different laws B hasn t one common law C shares the same laws D shares no common law 4 At the end of the passage the author suggests that A it is impossible for life to exist on planets B earthlike life could only exist on a few planets C life could exist on only one planet in a million D life could exist on a great number of planets B 用心 爱心 专心 3 Every land has its own dining custom and the United States is no exception Americans feel that the first rule of being a polite guest is to be on time If a person is invited to dinner at 6 30 the hostess expects him to be there at 6 30 or not more than a few minutes later As she usually does her own cooking a hostess times the meal so that the coffee and meat will be at their best at the time she asks the guest to come If he is late the food will not be so good and the hostess will be disappointed When the guest cannot come on time he calls his host or hostess on the telephone gives the reason and says at what time he thinks he can come As guests continue to arrive the men in the group often stand when a woman enters and remain standing until she has found a chair A man normally rises when he is being introduced to a woman A woman does not usually rise when she is being introduced either to a man or a woman unless the woman is much older When the guests sit down at a dinner table it is customary for the men to help the ladies by pushing their chairs under them Even an American may be confused by the number of knives forks and spoons beside his plate when he sits down to a formal dinner The rule is simple however use them in the order in which they lie beginning from the outside or watch the hostess and do what she does The small fork on the outside on the left is for salads which are often served with the soup The spoon on the outside on the right is for soup and so on Sometimes there is a separate little knife called a butter spreader on a small bread and butter plate on the left As the bread is passed each guest puts his piece on the bread and butterplate 5 The passage is mainly about A how to accept other people s invitation to dinner B how to behave properly before and at dinner C how to be polite to ladies at dinner D how to use the right kind of knives and forks 6 According to the passage necessitates 使成为必要 the use of knives forks and spoons the most A a dinner party B a picnic C breakfast D afternoon tea 7 Which of the following statements is NOT true A In case of being late the guest must phone the hostess B Follow the hostess in using different sets of knives and forks C As soon as a woman guest enters men can sit down D Men should help women to sit down at the dinner table 8 When both a man and a woman are introduced to another woman about their age normally has to rise A both the man and the woman B only the man C only the woman D neither of them C Soccer is played by millions of people all over the world but there have only been a few players who were truly great How did these players get that way was 用心
