the time We were on our way to a parent s 32 Arriving at the school my mom decided to the parking 33 across the street to look for a parking space on foot I have this thing where I 34 need to know the time so as she left I saw that it was 7 13 I sat in the car and messed with the radio I 35 the time again it was 7 15 I turned my head and looked out the passenger window 36 the door opened I didn t really think anything of it 37 it was my mother even though she had left two minutes ago Then I smelt beer and cigarettes so out of instinct I 38 my head to see this man in the car I was in complete 39 So many terrible things went through my mind I started to scream out the 40 but he began to put it up I took off the jacket I had and put it over him and started 41 I grabbed the nearest objects which were a pen that ironically my 42 had left on the seat and some open CDs and continued hitting He fought back but 43 I guess realizing that I was one to 44 a fight He ran out and left During this battle I had yelled out I won t let you 45 us He may have said something I m not sure but I do know one of my brothers started crying when I 46 At 7 17 my mom showed up and from there it went to the police and the parent s conference is a 47 in two weeks On my wall hangs the newspaper article of what 48 that day I look at the sketch 素描 that was condemned at the police station and 49 to never let powered cousins People in California love to talk about zero emissions vehicles but people in California seem to be clueless about where electricity comes from Power plants mostly use fire to make it Aside from the new folks who have their roofs covered with solar cells we get our electricity from generators Generators are fueled by something usually coal oil but also by heat generated in nuclear power plants There are a few wind farms and geothermal plants as well but by far we get electricity mainly by burning something In other words those zero emissions cars are likely coal burning cars It s just because the coal is burned somewhere else that it looks clean It is not It s as if the California Greens are covering their eyes If I can t see it it s not happening Gasoline is an incredibly efficient way to power a vehicle a gallon of gas has a lot of energy in it But when you take that gas or another fuel and first use it to make electricity you waste a nice part of that energy mostly in the form of wasted heat at the generator through the transmission lines etc A gallon of gas may propel your car 25 miles But the electricity you get from that gallon of gas won t get you nearly as far so electric cars burn more fuel than gas powered ones If our electricity came mostly from nukes or geothermal or hydro or solar or wind then an electric car truly would be clean But for political technical and economic reasons we don t use much of those energy sources In addition electric cars batteries which are poisonous for a long time will eventually end up in a landfill And finally When cars are the polluters the pollution is spread across all the roads When it s a power plant though all the junk is in one place 8 Nature is very good at cleaning up when things are not too concentrated but it takes a lot longer when all the garbage is in one spot 51 What does clueless mean in paragraph 2 A People are seeing the California Greens everywhere B People in California love to talk about zero emissions vehicles C People in California love to have their roofs covered with solar cells D People there have no idea that so far electricity mainly comes from burning coal oil etc 52 What is the main idea of the passage A Electric cars are not clean at all B Electric cars are better than gasoline powered ones C People cast doubts on electric cars batteries D Gasoline is an efficient way to power a vehicle 53 According to the passage electric cars A do not burn fuel and are more environment friendly B are poisonous because it is difficult for nature to clean the garbage up when their batteries are buried in one spot C are very good at cleaning up when things are not too concentrated D are poisonous for a long time and will eventually end up in a landfill 54 It can be inferred from the passage that A being green is good and should be encouraged in communication B electric cars are not clean in that we get electricity mainly by burning something C zero emissions vehicles should be chosen to protect our environment D electric cars are now the dominant vehicle compared with gasoline powered cousins B We all know that humans are damaging the environment but what can we do about it Some people are trying to do their best to be more environmentally friendly Some people suggest recycling paper tin plastic and glass in daily life They use 9 reusable products instead of disposable 一次性的 ones However more people are becoming interested in reducing their carbon footprint the amount of carbon they use They try to reduce their carbon emissions 排放物 by cycling using public transport or living green Recently some undergraduates of Fujian University of Technology built their green living paper buildings On May 10 2011 ten engineering majors in this school made their unique house a football like paper building which took less energy during a Low Emission Green Living campaign The campaign which was initiated by the Architecture Department of Fujian University of Technology inspires students to use creativity to design and build a green building in the square of the school within 24 hours Competitors had to live inside their buildings for one night The competition attracted over two hundred entries 参赛项目 from students and 22 pieces of work with the shapes of a star football and pyramid finally staged in the grounds While sitting inside the football like paper house the team leader of the competition group smiled and told us that the building had large enough space inside The amazing house drew much attention and received high praise from students and teachers He also said the inspiration for the design came from the beauty of motion in a football match These unique houses appeal to people to build housing projects specifically as environmentally friendly as possible to reduce the carbon emission 55 What is the text mainly about A The environment is becoming worse and we should protect it B The beauty of football moving made ten students design a football like house C Houses should also be environmentally friendly to reduce the carbon emission D The campaign called Low Emission Green Living took place in Shanghai University 56 The house made by ten engineering majors was different from others because A it had a football like shape and was made of paper B it took more energy than a common house C it had much more space than a common house D it looked like a star and needn t building materials 10 57 This campaign in Fujian University of Technology aimed to A teach students to build their own houses for living B make people build environmentally friendly houses C encourage students to think of new ways to build a green house D ask the students to recycle paper tin plastic and glass in daily life 58 The underlined word initiated in Paragraph 3 possibly means A copiedB stepped C startedD held C The world s astronomers came to their senses yesterday and approved a new definition of the word planet that would drop tiny Pluto from the club and relegate it instead to a lesser realm of dwarf planets It was a welcome step away from a proposal that would have kept Pluto as a planet but meantime opened the door for dozens of small icy bodies on the fringes of the solar system The important vote came after fierce debate at a meeting of the International Astronomical Union which had been considering a proposal to define a planet as any object that orbits a star and is large enough for its own gravity to pull it into a spherical 球 形的 shape That definition was scientifically precise but led to results that offended common sense An asteroid a small moon and another icy ball like Pluto would suddenly have risen to planet hood swelling the number of planets to 12 with many more icy rocks likely to qualify as more was learned about them Fortunately the astronomers have now added another requirement to the definition Planets must not only be large enough to be round they must also have cleared out the neighborhood around their orbits Pluto would not qualify it orbits in a belt of icy debris on the edge of the solar system Neither would an icy rock nicknamed Xena which orbits in that same zone nor Ceres a big asteroid that marches in the company of other asteroids Pluto s moon Charon which had qualified under the first proposal is also out of the running Pluto with its small size and oddball orbit should never have been deemed a planet in 11 the first place Henceforth there will be eight planets at least three dwarf planets and tens of thousands of smaller solar system bodies like comets and asteroids Our only regret is that the astronomers chose the name dwarf planets for Pluto s new category instead of abandoning the word entirely when discussing these less than planetary bodies 59 We can know from the passage that the new definition of planet A has been welcomed by all walks of life B will kick the Pluto out of the planet group in the solar system C still makes the Pluto as a planet D will enlarge the number of planets in our solar system into permanently 12 60 After the new definition of planet was put forward all of the following are regarded as planet EXCEPT A VenusB Ceres C MarsD Jupiter 61 If the original definition of planet had not been changed there would be the following consequences EXCEPT that A thousands of icy rocks in space will be classified as planets B some asteroids big enough to pull themselves into a spherical shape will be regarded as planets C the Pluto will be relegated to dwarf planet D there will be at least twelve or even more planets in the solar system 62 We can infer from the article that the decision to apply new definition to planet A has won universal support from scientists B has been severely criticized by many astronomers C has not been made inconsiderately D has been banned by the International Astronomical Union D The trouble with Europe is that it is so diverse 多样化 的 There are many different cultures from German and 12 French composers 作曲家 to English and Irish poets from French film directors and Italian tenors 男高音 to Swiss bankers and clockmakers When we move into the world of politics it is equally difficult for European leaders to see eye to eye When European leaders got together at their recent summit meeting in Brussels Belgium to discuss the European debt crisis there were bitter exchanges of words President Nicolas Sarkozy of France turned on David Cameron to tell him that he was fed up with the British Prime Minister s constant criticism 批评 of the euro Sarkozy told him You lost a good opportunity to shut up We are sick of you criticizing us and telling us what to do You say you hate the euro and now you want to interfere 干涉 in our meeting This was a reference to the way the UK has stayed outside the eurozone and held on to its own currency the pound Take a look at history For centuries France Britain Spain Portugal and Germany fought with one another on land and sea There was a 100 year long war between Britain and France in the 14th and 15th centuries Two world wars began in Europe When European nations weren t fighting with each other in Europe they were fighting in other foreign countries in a quest 寻求 for colonial 殖民地的 power raw materials spices and tea It is small wonder then that cultural stereotypes 成见 of the different European nations have emerged and some of them are far from friendly The phrase cheese eating surrender monkeys 吃奶酪的投降派杂耍猴 was first used in an episode of The Simpsons to describe the French Germans have a reputation for being efficient which has led to their powerful economy great cars and lack of a sense of humor according to the stereotype As for the Scots they have a reputation for drinking too much Prince Philip the Queen of England s husband once asked a driving instructor 教官 in Scotland how he managed to keep his clients away from the alcohol long enough for them to pass their driving tests Was this the prince s idea of a joke Or was he repeating a cultural stereotype 63 The underlined phrase see eye to eye in the article probably means 13 A be frie
