A A It was a warm April day when a big fat envelope came in the mail from the only college I had ever imagined attending I tore open the packet My eyes were fixed on the word congratulations I don t remember ever smiling so wide Then I looked at my financial 财政的 package The cost of Dream School s tuition 学费 room and board was around 40 000 an impossible sum How could I afford to attend What good reasons did I have to go there when three other fine colleges were offering me free tuition My other choices were good solid schools even if they weren t as famous as my first choice In my mind attending my dream university would be the only way to realize my dream of becoming a world class writer My parents understood how I felt They told me that even though it would be a financial problem I could go wherever I would be happiest But as I was always careful with money I wasn t sure what to do One of the schools that offered me a full ride had an informational dinner one night in the spring Considering my parents financial difficulties I decided to drive the 45 minutes and attend At first all I had planned to do was smile politely eat free food listen quietly But I surprised myself At dinner the president of the university talked about the wonderful activities on campus 校园 including guest lectures and social gatherings He also made it perfectly clear that free food would be offered at all future events He continued with explanations of professors class sizes activities and sporting events on campus As he spoke I began to realize that this school 用心 爱心 专心2 though not as good as my first choice might be the best one for me It seemed small yet with many great programs It seemed challenging yet caring As the president ended his speech we clapped politely and pushed back our chairs As I walked out that door a feeling of comfort washed over me Looking at the campus that night I realized that I would be spending the next four years right there In all honesty my university is not as well known as my dream university However it turned out to be the right choice of schools for me 1 How did the author feel when he started to read the letter A He was full of joy B He was lost in his dream C He was worried about the money D He was uncertain which school to go to 2 We can learn from the passage that the parents were A honest B strict C supportive D decisive 3 In Paragraph 5 offered me a full ride can be replaced by A would pay for transport to the school B would show me around the campus C would offer free meals at all events D would charge me nothing for tuition 4 What does the author mainly want to say A Your second choice college may actually by your best fit B You should consider comfort in your choice of schools C You should try your best to attend your dream school D Your choice of schools should be based on their fame B B People often talk as if shyness is a disease or mental conditional that can be cured I prefer to think of it as an emotional disability It s something we are born with and something we carry with us in our entire lives There are 用心 爱心 专心3 too many people however who seem to be determined to find some way of doing away with their shyness In my opinion it s a waste of time I don t mean that we should do nothing about it quite the contrary I think we need to separate the basis fact of our shyness from our ability to take part in a social environment Look at one of the most famous shy people of them all Johnny Carson This man is painfully shy yet for decades he made a living talking and associating 交往 with different people every night in front of a national audience Carson has never done away with his shyness but he has successfully found a way to deal with it to the extent that he could be not just a talk show host but a legend 传奇 among talk show hosts Look also at Sally Fields who has recently admitted her problem with shyness This is a woman who has appeared in many films TV shows and interviews yet in her early years she was so shy that she turned down a lunch invitation from Jane Fonda because she was terribly afraid of meeting her I guess that our shyness is there because each of us is born with some insecurity 不安全感 and this insecurity prevents us from reaching out to others the way people with a more open personality do As we grow up and become adults we allow our social skills to grow and develop But we are still stuck in kindergarten or elementary school or wherever our shyness took root in our soul 5 In the author s view shyness can be explained as A a disease that can be easily cured B a not very normal mental condition C an emotional disability D something we pick up after birth 6 The author believes it s a waste of time to A develop a healthy personality B talk with as many people as possible C study where shyness comes from 用心 爱心 专心4 D look for ways to do away with one s shyness 7 Which of the following is TRUE of Johnny Carson A He dared to speak in front of a national audience B he did away with his shyness carefully C He was described as a hero in some legend books D He failed to become a good talk show host 8 The passage tells us that Sally Fields was A proud all the time B impolite when young C shy in her early years D close to Jane Fonda C C How Parents Can Help Unfortunately learning does not simply happen As a mother and ex teacher I believe that good education involves not only the pupil and the teacher but also the parents What then is the parents role The atmosphere at home is bound to influence a child s attitude toward schoolwork Parents should be positive and notice what their children do well rewarding success with praise and occasional treats Under no circumstances should children be made to look foolish for their efforts Tell a child often enough that he is lazy or stupid and he is likely to become an adult without self respect Listening is also vital Children need to be taken seriously no matter how unimportant their ideas may appear It lets them know that their opinions and feelings matter We must be observant able to detect physical signs of unhappiness A child who keeps on complaining of headaches or sickness may well be crying out for help He may not be up to the work demanded of him On the other hand it could be an indication of boredom On no account should a child feel unable to approach his parents The lines of communication must be kept open At the same time we can help our children to become more independent and consequently better learners by giving them a few regular domestic chores that 用心 爱心 专心5 they can carry out successfully In their free time active rather than passive pleasures should be encouraged In other words reading is preferable to watching television Above all we must set an example Children in the end will do as we do not as we say If we take an interest in hobbies so will our children As they grow older homework must be their responsibility We can be of most use not by doing it for them even if we are able to but by discussing the problem and helping them to approach it in the correct way In addition we must ensure that the necessary space and equipment are provided Teenagers need a quiet well lit area in which to study with access to dictionaries and reference books At this difficult age although they may not show it they also need to know that we care 9 According to the text parents should A not criticize their children B be very strict with their children C give more encouragement to their children D influence their children s attitude toward schools 10 The underlined part Listening is also vital in Para 2 means that it is also important A for children to listen to their parents advice B for parents to take their children s ideas seriously C for parents to notice what their children do well D for children to know their parents opinions and feelings 11 Sometimes a child may complain of headaches in order to A go to see the doctor B make his parents bored C refuse to offer help to his parents D get more attention from his parents 12 According to the text which of the following is the most important for better learners A More hobbies in their free time B Development of independence 用心 爱心 专心6 C Better communication between them and teachers D Good balance between active and passive pleasures 13 It can be concluded from the text that A better environment helps teenagers in their schoolwork B both active and passive pleasures are of most use to children C there should be more communication between parents and teachers D parents play a more important role than teachers in their children s education D D When someone has deeply hurt you it can be extremely difficult to let go of your anger But forgiveness is possible and it can be surprisingly helpful to your physical and mental health Indeed research has shown that people who forgive report more energy better appetite 胃口 and better sleep patterns People who forgive show less anger and more hopefulness says Dr Frederic Luskin who wrote the book Forgive for Good So it can help save on the wear and tear on our system and allow people to feel more energetic So when someone has hurt you calm yourself first Take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure a beautiful scene in nature someone you love Don t wait for an apology Many times the person who hurt you may never think of apologizing says Dr Luskin They may have wanted to hurt you or they just don t see things the same way So if you wait for people to apologize you could be waiting a very long time Keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean accepting the action of the person who upset you Mentally going over your hurt gives power to the person who brought you pain Instead learn to look for the love beauty and kindness around you Finally try to see things from the other person s perspective 视角 You may realize that he or she was acting out of ignorance 无知 fear even love To gain perspective you may want to write a letter to yourself from that person s point of view 用心 爱心 专心7 14 The text is mainly written to explain A how to keep yourself from being hurt B how to stay mentally healthy C how and when to remain calm D why and how to pardon others 15 According to the writer what is the right way to calm down after being hurt A Try to figure out why you get hurt B Write a letter to the person who hurt you C Persuade yourself to accept what others have done to you D Think about pleasant things and forget about the hurt 16 Dr Luskin advises us not to wait for an apology after being hurt because A we are not patient enough B we d feel worse accepting others apology C people seldom want to apologize D people don t mean it when they apologize E E BEIJING Xinhua China s government is likely to cancel its golden week holiday
