creatures such as seals Alaska is a winter wonderland filled with giant glaciers and animals such as moose The states are different but they do have one thing in common their age Hawaii and Alaska were the last states to join the country in 1959 Let s explore the states Hawaii The country s youngest state has royal roots It was once a kingdom The king and queen lived in a palace in Honolulu and they controlled all eight of Hawaii s islands The rule of Hawaii s last queen ended in 1893 Americans who lived on the islands forced her from power because they wanted a government run by the people The island became part of the country in 1900 and a state on Aug 21 1959 When Hawaii became a state its residents gained important rights They could vote in national elections The small state was a big addition Hawaii supplies more than one third of the world s pineapples The islands are also important for science The world s biggest telescopeis located on Mauna Kea Hawaii s tallest mountain
