when I was working as a psychologist in England an adolescent boy showed up in my office It was David He kept walking up and down restlessly his face pale and his hands shaking slightly His head teacher had referred him to me This boy has lost his family he wrote He is understandably very sad and refuses to talk to others and I m very worried about him Can you help I looked at David and showed him to a chair How could I help him There are problems psychology doesn t have the answer to and which no words can describe Sometimes the best thing one can do is to listen openly and sympathetically The first two times we met David didn t say a word He sat there only looking up to look at the children s drawings on the wall behind me I suggested we play a game of chess He nodded After that he played chess with me every Wednesday afternoon in complete silence and without looking at me It s not easy to cheat in chess but I admit I made sure David won once or twice Usually he arrived earlier than agreed took the chess board and pieces from the shelf and began setting them up before I even got a chance to sit down It seemed as if he enjoyed my company But why did he never look at me Perhaps he simply needs someone to share his pain with I thought Perhaps he senses that I respect his suffering Some months later when we were playing chess he looked up at me suddenly 7 It s your turn he said After that day David started talking He got friends in school and joined a bicycle club He wrote to me a few times about his biking with some friends and about his plan to get into university Now he had really started to live his own life Maybe I gave David something But I also learned that one without any words can reach out to another person All it takes is a hug a shoulder to cry on a friendly touch and an ear that listens 60 When he first met the author David A felt a little excited B walked energetically C looked a little nervous D showed up with his teacher 61 As a psychologist the author A was ready to listen to David B was skeptical about psychology C was able to describe David s problem D was sure of handling David s problem 62 David enjoyed being with the author because he A wanted to ask the author for advice B needed to share sorrow with the author C liked the children s drawings in the office D beat the author many times in the chess game 63 What can be inferred about David A He recovered after months of treatment B He liked biking before he lost his family C He went into university soon after starting to talk D He got friends in school before he met the author 2013 湖北卷 C C We ve reached a strange some would say unusual point While fighting world hunger continues to be the matter of vital importance according to a recent report from the World Health Organization WHO more people now die from being overweight or say from being extremely fat than from being underweight It s the good life that s more likely to kill us these days Worse nearly 18 million children under the age of five around the world are estimated to be overweight What s going on We really don t have many excuses for our weight problems The dangers of the problem have been drilled into us by public health campaigns since 2001 and the message is getting through up to a point In the 1970s Finland for example had the highest rate of heart disease in the world and being overweight was its main cause Not any more A public health campaign has greatly reduced the number of heart disease deaths by 80 per cent over the past three decades 8 Maybe that explains why the percentage of people in Finland taking diet pills doubled between 2001 and 2005 and doctors even offer surgery of removing fat inside and change the shape of the body That has become a sort of fashion No wonder it ranks as the world s most body conscious country We know what we should be doing to lose weight but actually doing it is another matter By far the most popular excuse is not taking enough exercise More than half of us admit we lack willpower Others blame good food They say it s just too inviting and it makes them overeat Still others lay the blame on the Americans complaining that pounds have piled on thanks to eating too much American style fast food Some also blame their parents their genes But unfortunately the parents are wronged because they re normal in shape or rather slim It s a similar story around the world although people are relatively unlikely to have tried to lose weight Parents are eager to see their kids shape up Do as I say not as I do 64 What is the strange point mentioned in the first sentence A The good life is a greater risk than the bad life B Starvation is taking more people s lives in the world C WHO report shows people s unawareness of food safety D Overweight issue remains unresolved despite WHO s efforts 65 Why does the author think that people have no excuse for being overweight A A lot of effective diet pills are available B Body image has nothing to do with good food C They have been made fully aware of its dangers D There are too many overweight people in the world 66 The example of Finland is used to illustrate A the cause of heart disease B the fashion of body shaping C the effectiveness of a campaign D the history of a body conscious country 67 Which would be the best title for the passage A Actions or Excuses B Overweight or Underweight C WHO in a Dilemma D No Longer Dying of Hunger 2013 江苏卷 D D We ve considered several ways of paying to cut in line hiring line standers buying tickets from scalpers 票贩子 or purchasing line cutting privileges directly from say an airline or an amusement park Each of these deals replaces the morals of the queue waiting your turn with the morals of the market paying a price for faster service Markets and queues paying and waiting are two different ways of 9 allocating things and each is appropriate to different activities The morals of the queue First come first served have an egalitarian 平等主义的 appeal They tell us to ignore privilege power and deep pockets The principle seems right on playgrounds and at bus stops But the morals of the queue do not govern all occasions If I put my house up for sale I have no duty to accept the first offer that comes along simply because it s the first Selling my house and waiting for a bus are different activities properly governed by different standards Sometimes standards change and it is unclear which principle should apply Think of the recorded message you hear played over and over as you wait on hold when calling your bank Your call will be answered in the order in which it was received This is essential for the morals of the queue It s as if the company is trying to ease our impatience with fairness But don t take the recorded message too seriously Today some people s calls are answered faster than others Call center technology enables companies to score incoming calls and to give faster service to those that come from rich places You might call this telephonic queue jumping Of course markets and queues are not the only ways of allocating things Some goods we distribute by merit others by need still others by chance However the tendency of markets to replace queues and other non market ways of allocating goods is so common in modern life that we scarcely notice it anymore It is striking that most of the paid queue jumping schemes we ve considered at airports and amusement parks in call centers doctors offices and national parks are recent developments scarcely imaginable three decades ago The disappearance of the queues in these places may seem an unusual concern but these are not the only places that markets have entered 68 According to the author which of the following seems governed by the principle First come first served A Taking buses B Buying houses C Flying with an airline D Visiting amusement parks 69 The example of the recorded message in Paragraphs 4 and 5 illustrates A the necessity of patience in queuing B the advantage of modern technology C the uncertainty of allocation principle D the fairness of telephonic services 70 The passage is meant to A justify paying for faster services B discuss the morals of allocating things C analyze the reason for standing in line D criticize the behavior of queue jumping 第二节 共 5 小题 每小题 2 分 满分 10 分 10 基础题 根据短文内容 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项 选项中 有两项为多余选项 What is your favourite colour Do you like yellow orange red 71 Do you prefer grey and blue Then you are probably quiet shy and you would rather follow than lead You tend to be a pessimist At least this is what psychologists tell us and they should know because they have been seriously studying the meaning of colour preference as well as the effect that colours have on human beings 72 If you happen to love brown you did so as soon as you opened your eyes or at least as soon as you could see clearly 73 A yellow room makes most people feel more cheerful and more relaxed than a dark green one and a red dress brings warmth and cheer to the saddest winter day 74 A black bridge over the Thames River near London used to be the scene of more suicides 自杀 than any other bridge in the area until it was repainted green The number of suicide attempts immediately fell sharply Perhaps it would have fallen even more if the bridge had been done in pink or baby blue 75 It is an established fact that factory workers work better harder and have fewer accidents when their machines are painted orange rather than black or grey A On the other hand black is depressing B They tell us among other facts that we do not choose our favourite colour as grow up we are born with our preference C The rooms are painted in different colours
