Equipment 1 PURPOSE The purpose of this procedure is to define the Personal Protective Equipment PPE requirements for African Minerals AML This procedure establishes the minimum guidelines for the selection use maintenance training and hazard assessment for Personal Protective Clothing and Equipment PPE As a minimum requirement all personal protective equipment in use at sites must comply with the appropriate Australian Standard 2 SCOPE This procedure will apply to all African Minerals Personnel Contractor personnel and visitors at African Minerals work sites Unless otherwise approved by the Senior Site Official the requirements noted in this Procedure shall be the minimum standard acceptable This procedure encompasses the requirements of Legislation 3 RELATED PROCEDURES 4 TEMPLATES SL03 AML 00 0000 SR FRM 00027 Prescription Glasses Register SL03 AML 00 0000 SR FRM 00030 PPE Register 5 DEFINITIONS AND ABREVIATIONS Managers Ensure employees contractors and visitors who are to use the clothing or equipment are instructed in the fitting use selection testing maintenance and storage of the clothing or equipment informed of the limitations in the use of the clothing or equipment informed of the requirement to maintain the clothing or equipment in a good working order instructed that when the clothing or equipment no longer provides the level of protection required to protect the user against the hazard to replace the item informed that when the safe working life as specified by the manufacturer has expired to replace the item instructed to assess for damage on a regular basis and when the clothing or equipment is damaged or cannot be repaired replace the item to ensure that an area of workplace where the protective clothing and equipment s required is identified by a sign in accordance with AS 1319 instructed to wear or use personal protective clothing or equipment provided when it is necessary to protect them against any hazard at the mine and ensure workplace inspections are conducted to monitor compliance Employee Wear the clothing and equipment as specified in the induction process and site signage Use the protective clothing and equipment as per the instruction provided Not deliberately misuse or damage the clothing or equipment As soon as practicable after becoming aware of any damage to malfunction or need to clean or sterilise the clothing or document is uncontrolled once printed TONKOLILI IRON ORE PROJECT Personal Protective Equipment Ensure loose clothing jewellery and hair is confined to prevent entanglement with machinery electrical equipment or any other device Replace worn or torn clothing HSE personnelSupport employees and Line Managers in the implementation of their responsibilities Audit and monitor compliance with this procedure at the site JHA Job Hazard Analysis MSDS Material Safety Data Sheet PPE Personal Protective and Equipment 6 DETAILS ACTIONS The use of personal protective equipment widely considered as the lowest in the order of effectiveness in the hierarchy of controls as mentioned in risk management But due to the nature of the associated risks it may also be the most practical mechanism to control risk provided it is manufactured to an acceptable standard 6 1 SELECTION OF PERSONAL PROTECTIVE CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT When selecting the personal protective clothing and equipment it should be considered whether the protection is required for a specific risk or to control multiple risks presented by the same hazard or a combination of hazards In some cases the use of personal protective clothing and equipment may create a secondary risk not identified in the original assessment These risks should be evaluated 6 1 1 General Requirements The minimum PPE required for African Minerals operational sites is excludes head offices High visibility collared long sleeve cotton shirts with reflective stripes for all employees and contractors performing work Visitors may also wear a long sleeve collared shirt and a high visibility vest with reflective strips Long trousers made of lightweight cotton or jeans Steel capped ankle height lace up boots Safety glasses Safety gloves with securing clip Hard hats in designated areas African Minerals may also specify additional items of PPE to be used where unusual conditions or hazards exist 6 1 2 Head Protection Protective head gear is standard protection against injury from falling objects A safety helmet with chin strap where working at height or constantly bending down manufactured in accordance with SANS 1397 Occupational protective helmets are mandatory for all operational areas except office areas Helmets shall be worn in accordance with manufacturer s instructions Peaks of helmets shall be worn to the front 6 1 3 Foot Protection Appropriate footwear to guard against objects falling on feet is mandatory in any area on any operational African Minerals site corporate offices excepted Foot protection must be appropriately laced steel capped acid resistant safety boots suitable to the nature of the work Comment B1 Please assist I don t any reference to this standard SL03 AML 00 00000 SR PRO 00008 complying with SANS 1186 PART 1 Elastic sided boots safety shoes zippered sided boots are not permitted 6 1 4 Eye Protection general Safety spectacles with permanently attached side shields must comply with SANS 1404 and CKS 552 Slide on side shields are not acceptable Eyewear must be medium impact as a minimum Additional eye and face protection minimum safety glasses and side shields and full face visor conforming to Australian Standards shall be provided and worn when Welding cutting burning chipping or scabbling Operating a grinder drill metal cutter masonry saw or drill or similar piece of equipment Operating an explosive powered tool Striking metal against metal Operating compressed air activated tools or hose lines Handling corrosive dust or chemicals Painting In any other circumstances where a recognized eye hazard exists Note Mono goggles or a full face shield shall be worn in designated areas 6 1 5 Prescription eye protection Recent changes made to the AS NZS 1337 6 2007 Personal eye protection Prescription eye protectors against low and medium impact have defined new standards for prescription safety glasses All Prescription safety glasses manufactured must be compliant with medium impact requirements Employees with prescription glasses are to be issued with mono goggles over glasses while prescription safety glasses are being prepared Safety sunglasses with side shields must also comply with SANS 1404 and CKS 552 6 1 6 Clothing Mandatory requirements are high visibility long sleeve shirts African Minerals users yellow blue combination with reflective stripes or a vest with reflective strips Long trousers made of lightweight 100 cotton or full overalls made of light weight 100 cotton material High Visibility clothing and reflective vests must comply with the requirements of SABS 434 Shirts shall be buttoned at the cuff and tucked in at all times Disposable overalls will be supplied for personnel working with synthetic mineral fibres SMF or ceramic fibres 6 1 7 Respiratory Protection Appropriate respiratory equipment is to be worn whenever hazardous or toxic fumes or gases cannot be removed by elimination substitution or ventilation where employees need to escape from potentially dangerous gases or fumes dust produced from any operational process spraying or handling material which is detrimental to the respiratory system engaged in grit blasting or spray concreting entering an area containing harmful or toxic atmospheric contaminants or where oxygen content is below 20 0 by volume Respiratory equipment must be selected in accordance with SANS 10338 and SABS 0338 Selection use and maintenance of respiratory protective devices and comply with SABS EN 134 and SABS EN 135 Respiratory protective devices and will be identified as part of operational requirements and work instructions Any additional respiratory protection would be assessed as part of a risk assessment Whenever a supplied air type respirator is in use a fully charged stand by air cylinder shall be available for immediate use at the work location Suitable respiratory protection will be provided for personnel working with synthetic mineral PROJECT Personal Protective Equipment The selection process for respiratory equipment should include the nature toxicity physical form and concentration of the contaminant whether particulate gas or vapour or a combination of those whether failure of the respirator could result in immediate danger to life or health the need to wear other personal protective equipment e g eye or skin protection against irritants the adequacy of the exposure warning symptoms given by the contaminant the possibility of the contaminated atmosphere being flammable or explosive and the ability to effectively detect the contaminants likely to be present e g availability of correct detection equipment 6 1 8 Hearing Protection Hearing protection shall be worn in designated signed areas when undertaking noise producing tasks as identified in a risk assessment noise survey e g grinding using pneumatic rattle guns etc in areas as identified in the occupational health and hygiene plan Hearing protection used disposable ear plugs and ear muffs shall be those manufactured in accordance with SANS 1451 1 and SANS 1451 2 Disposable earplugs should be installed with clean hands to avoid infections of the ear 6 1 9 Fall Protection Fall arrest and fall restraint system components used must comply with one or more SANS 50341 50795 50361 50362 the completed expense claim form and submit to the line manager The
