There have been few studies of overweight and cognitive functioning, (认知功能) possibly because it is generally believed that it is not a primary risk cause for poor cognitive performance. Yet, it turns out that overweight may damage cognitive functions such as memory and attention. Losing weight, therefore, may help improve these mental functions, according to a new research led by John Gunstad, assistant professor of psychology at Kent State University. Growing evidence suggests that being fat is linked to cognitive deficits (缺陷). So Gunstad and his team guessed that losing weight might improve mental function. For their study, they measured memory and attention in a group of 150 overweight participants, some of whom had some kind of operation for weight loss and some did not. All of the volunteers completed mental skills tests to assess their abilities of memory and attention at the beginning of the study, and again 12 weeks later. To begin with, about 24% of the patients showed damaged learning and 23% showed signs of poor memory when tested. At the end of the study, those who had lost weight after operation improved their scores into the average or above average range for cognitive functions. Scores for the volunteers who didnt lose weight dropped even further. The study helped Gunstad to find out whether losing weight had any effect on mental function. Now that hes seen the positive effect that weight loss can have on memory and attention, he says he will next study those who choose to lose weight by the traditional wayeating healthier and getting more active. He expects that losing weight in this way will have a similarly positive effect on the brain. “If we can improve the condition with operations, then we can probably produce the same change with behavioral weight loss as well,” he says.【小题1】There is less research on overweight and cognitive functions because researchers _.A. believe overweight only affects our bodyB. have focused on ways to sharpen peoples mindC. do not consider overweight a main cause for low cognitive abilityD. are clear about the relation between weight and mental functions【小题2】The result of Gunstads study shows that _.A. losing weight has little effect on peoples memoryB. losing weight can improve peoples mental functionsC. overweight people are likely to have psychology problemsD. overweight peoples abilities of concentration differ greatly【小题3】What is Gunstad planning to prove next in his research?A. The difference is important regardless of industry and company size. Companies fearful or losing their competitive advantage spend much time and money looking for ways to pick up the speed. In our study of 343 businesses, the companies that chose to go, go, go to try to gain an edge ended with lower sales and operating incomes than those that paused at key moments to make sure they were on the right track, Whats more, the firms that “slowed down to speed up “improved their top and bottom lines ,averaging 40% higher sales and 52% higher operating incomes over a three-years period. How did they disobey the laws of business physics, taking more time than competitors yet performing better ? They thought differently about what “slower “and “faster” mean. Firms sometimes fail to understand the difference between operation speed (moving quickly ) and strategic speed (reducing the time it takes to deliver value ). Simply increasing the speed of production, for example , may be one way to try to reduce the speed difference . But that often leads to reduced value over time, in the form of lower-quality products and services. In our study, high performing companies with strategic speed always made changes when necessary . They became more open to idea and discussion. They encouraged new ways of thinking. And they allowed time to look and learn. By contrast (相比而言). Performance suffered at firms that moved falt all the among their employer , and had little time thinking about changes.Strategic speed serves as a kind of leadership . Teams that regularly take time to get things right , rather than plough ahead full bore , are more successful in meeting their business goals . That kind of strategy must come from the top.47 . What does the underlined part “gain an edge ” in Paragraph 2 mean ? A. Increase the speed. B. Get an advantage. C. Reach the limit. D. Set a goal48. The underlined part “the laws of business physics” in Paragraph 3 means _. A. spending more time and performing worse. B. spending more time and performing better C. spending less time and performing worse D. spending less time and performing better 49. What can we learn from the text? A. how fast a firm moves depends on how big it is. B. how competitive a firm is depends on what it produces. C. Firms guided by strategic speed take time to make necessary changes. D. Firms guided by operational speed take time to develop necessary team spirit.50. Where could be the last title for the text? A. Improve quality? Serve better. B. Deliver value? Plough ahead. C. Yesterday he proudly claimed in court that despite his complete lack of medical experience or qualifications, he had saved several peoples lives. He had even been allowed to assist a surgeon during an emergency operation on a patient who was about to die on something she had swallowed. “I watched one of those TV dramas about a hospital and suddenly I felt like playing one of the roles myself. So I put on a white jacket and a stethoscope(听诊器)and walked around one of the biggest hospital in London. At first I just watched. Once you learn how doctors talk to patients, nurses and others doctors, its easy to take people in,” he said. One of the patients he treated was Laura Kennan. She had been knocked down by a car and fainted. When she came to the hospital, York was standing over her. “He looked very professional. He told me his name was Doctor Simon. Then he gave me some sort of injection,” she said. And then he suddenly cleared off when a nurse asked who he was. She didnt think there was anything wrong. “I would never have realized he was a fake if a policewoman hadnt showed me his photograph a week later. When the policewoman told me who he really was, I could hardly believe my ears.” Judge Raymond Adams told York that he was“ shocked and horrified” that he got away with his deceiving for so long, and then sentenced him to eighteen months in a special prison for criminal with mental disorders.“I can only hope that this will not lead to further problems. After all, you will have considerable opportunity to study the behaviour of the psychiatrists(精神科医生)who will look after you while you are there. If you try to persuade people that you yourself are a psychiatrist after you are set free, I shall make sure that you are given a much longer sentence.” Judge Adams warned York.56. York was proud of the fact that _.A. people thought he could become a real doctorB. a surgeon let him watch an operation. C. he had cheated doctors for so
