less pleasant like being called in by your boss to explain why you did this or that and why you did not do this or that Sour music indeed but it has to be faced The phrase to face the music is familiar to every American young and old It is at least 100 years old The first information comes from the American writer James Fenimore Cooper He said in 1851 that the expression was first used by actors while waiting in the wings to go on stage After they got their cue 提示 暗示 to go on they often said It s time to go to face the music And that is exactly what they did face the orchestra which was just below the stage An actor might be frightened or nervous as he moved on to the stage in front of the audience that might be friendly or perhaps unfriendly especially if he forgot his lines But he had to go out So to face the music came to mean having to go through something no matter how unpleasant the experience might be because you knew you had no choice The other explanation comes from the army Men had to face inspection by their leader The soldiers worried about how well they looked Was their equipment clean shiny enough to pass inspection Still the men had to go out and face the music of the band as well as the inspection What else could they do 9 According to the passage the word music means A your boss s criticism 批评 B your leader s inspection C something unpleasant to be of confidence Or do you try to slip in without being noticed The way you go into new situations shows your level of self confidence In life we admire those who do their tasks confidently We prefer people who appear to know what they re doing But where does that confidence begin Developing self confidence starts very early It s parents role to get kids on the right track toward becoming confident people To help that process parents should always offer more praise than criticism 批评 That can be done by focusing on the child s strengths Parents should encourage their children to try new things and take risks When children make mistakes their parents should still let them know that they are loved Children whose parents do these things will likely develop into confident adults But self confidence still doesn t come easily So what s the solution With most things in life practice makes perfect and that is true of confidence skills The more you practice them the easier they will become Always hold your head high and look people in the eye Answer questions clearly and confidently The way you walk shows others how confident you are Focus on the things that you do well and look for opportunities to use those abilities Keep an item in clear view that reminds you of a recent success It could be a good test score or a prize from a contest Remind yourself that one success often leads to the next Prepare thoroughly for every project You ll approach the task more confidently knowing that you re ready All humans fail at times and you will too But don t allow mistakes to trouble you Learning from mistakes helps you face the same situation later without fear Even with practice you will never be perfect But you can learn to love and accept yourself and live your life with confidence 4 Title 1 Self confidence The parent s role 2 more than blame them Encourage them to try new things and take risks 3 their mistakes Advice on becoming confident Practice as much as 4 Use body 5 to show your confidence Focus on your strengths and talents and put those abilities to 6 Use 7 encouragement to inspire yourself Make thorough 8 9 from your own mistakes 10 Keeping on practicing and loving and respecting yourself will make you more confident 结束 I am not really much of a diet fan my weight has never been an issue I eat whatever I want when I want But as Pamela McDonald explains diet is not merely a method for controlling weight but has a significant influence on health and quality of life I can hardly imagine that living on fried bacon would be a good way to lose weight and promote good overall health Likewise a steady diet of cabbage soup would likely become somewhat monotonous 单调乏味的 after a couple of days Pamela McDonald takes a different approach there is no one size fits all diet different people need different things Although all humans are intrinsically 本 质地 composed of the same material the building blocks our genes are subtlety different The author maintains that one particular part of a person s DNA something called the APO E gene has much to do with how our body tolerates foods of different types This gene comes in 8 varieties and depending on the variety the food requirements are different This has little to do with weight loss and has more to do with overall good health Weight gain is not a problem but rather a symptom A diet alone will not resolve the entire problem it is merely one part of the larger picture I have to admit that parts of The APO E Gene Diet were a little heavy going I appreciate that the author felt the requirement to back up her claims with some scientific data but for the lay 外行的 man it makes for some rather difficult reading 5 The second half of the book is recipes now this is something I do understand She has created some very innovative dishes and certainly more than one that had me feeling hungry just reading them My favorite of them is a very traditional English dish the Cornish Pasty An interesting book and one that people should read you can get your copy from Amazon What s the writing purpose of the passage To help readers realize the importance of diets To share her reviews of a book about diets To advertise for the Amazon online bookstore To introduce a new way of losing weight 2 What can we learn from Pamela McDonald s book A Different people need different foods to keep fit B Humans are completely made up of the same genes C Different APO E gene decides if you are healthy D Diets alone can successfully help fat people lose weight What s the shortage of Pamela McDonald s book It advises people to eat some repeated diets every day to keep slim It supports its arguments with convincing scientific explanation Parts of it are difficult for common readers to understand well It is a heavy book that is too long for many readers to finish What CANNOT we infer from the passage A What food we need is decided by the environment we re brought up B Gaining weight indicates there may be something wrong with your health C The writer is deeply attracted by the dishes introduced in the book D You can learn how to make the Cornish Pasty from the book 5 We can use the following words to describe Pamela McDonald s book EXCEPT A interesting B innovative C persuasive D humourous 参考答案 1 5 B A C A D 结束 Interest in pursuing international careers has risen in recent years as a result of chronic 长久的 personnel shortages that are causing companies to search beyond their home borders for talent Professionals seek career experience outside of their home countries for a variety of reasons They may feel the need to recharge their batteries with a new challenge They may want a position with more responsibility that encourages creativity and initiative Or they may wish to expose their children to another culture and the opportunity to learn a second language When applying for a job one usually has to submit a resume or curriculum vitae CV The two terms generally mean the same thing a one or two page document 6 describing one s educational qualifications and professional experience However guidelines for preparing a resume are constantly changing The best advice is to find out what is appropriate regarding the corporate 公司 culture the country culture and the culture of the person making the hiring decision The challenge will be to embrace two or more cultures in one document The following list is a good place to start Educational requirements differ from country to country In almost every case of cross border job hunting just stating the title of your degree will not be an adequate description Provide the reader with details about your studies and any related experience Pay attention to the resume format you use chronological or reverse chronological order Chronological order means listing your oldest work experience first Reverse chronological order means listing your current or most recent experience first Most countries have preferences about which format is most acceptable If you find no specific guidelines the general preference is for the reverse chronological format If you are submitting your resume in English find out if the recipient 收 件人 uses British English or American English because there are variations between the two versions For example
