河南许昌县2017高考英语阅读理解一轮基础训练(一)阅读理解。It is hardly surprising that clothing manufacturers(生产商) follow certain uniform standards for various features(特征) of clothes. What seems strange, however, is that the standard adopted for women is the opposite of the one for men. Take a look at the way your clothes button. Mens clothes tend to button from the right, and womens from the left. Considering most of the worlds population-men and women-are right-handed, the mens standard would appear to make more sense for women. So why do womens clothes button from the left? History really seems to matter here. Buttons first appeared only on the clothes of the rich in the 17th century, when rich women were dressed by servants. For the mostly right-handed servants, having womens shirts button from the left would be easier. On the other hand, having mens shirts button from the right made sense, too. Most men dressed themselves, and a sword drawn from the left with the right hand would be less likely to get caught in the shirt. Today women are seldom dressed by servants, but buttoning from the left is still the standard for them. Is it interesting? Actually, a standard, once set, resists change. At a time when all womens shirts buttoned from the left, it would have been risky for any single manufacturer to offer womens shirts that buttoned from the right. After all, women had grown so used to shirts which buttoned from the left and would have to develop new habits and skills to switch. Besides, some women might have found it socially awkward to appear in public wearing shirts that buttoned from the right, since anyone who noticed that would believe they were wearing mens shirts. ( ) 1. What is surprising about the standard of the clothing industry? A. It has been followed by the industry for over 400 years. B. It is different for mens clothing and womens. C. It woks better with men than with women. D. It fails to consider right-handed people. ( ) 2. What do we know about the rich men in the 17th century? A. They tended to wear clothes without buttons. B. They were interested in the historical matters. C. They were mostly dressed by servants. D. They drew their swords from the left. ( ) 3. Womens clothes still button from the left today because.A. adopting mens style is improper for women B. manufacturers should follow standards C. modern women dress themselves D. customs are hard to change ( ) 4. I remember my Mom worrying about me getting sick from the heat in the summer, because I wore a thickblue sweater all the time. No respectable cowboy, however, would wear short sleeves so I sweated while I played. One day my parents gave me a bb gun. It lookedjust like a gun that all the cowboys used in the movies. I spent hours each day during those summer months shooting at stumps andpretending to be John Wayne (film actor who played tough heroes). As I was coming into the house one afternoon, though, I tried it one time too many. The gun that I thought was empty let out a soft pop and a bullet flew across the room and parted the hair of my Dad who was asleep on the couch. My Dad took one look at the bb hole a half inch above his head, walked over to me, took my gun, walked outside, and calmly broke it in half.I didnt cry too much over this. I knew how close I had come to hurting my Dad with my stupidity. I didnt expect to ever get another bb gun either. That is why I was so surprised when my Dad bought me another one the next year. I guess he thought I had wised up enough to know how to use it this time. I never put a single bb in the new gun, but in my imagination JohnWayne rode again.I eventually outgrew my cowboy stage, but I never did outgrow myappreciation for my Fathers forgiveness. He showed me that even when Imessed up in the worse way I was still loved. He gave me another chanceand let me know that I was forgiven whether I deserved it or not. McKay was included in a list of university alumni (校友)who had served during the First World War,but his name was unfamiliar to Broad,a specialist in military history. Out of curiosity,Broad spent hours at the local archives (档案馆)in a fruitless search for information on McKay. Tired and discouraged,he finally gave up. On his way out,Broads glance happened to fall on an exhibiting case showing some old newspapers. His eye was drawn to an old picture of a young man in a rugby uniform. As he read the words beside the picture,he experienced a thrilling realization. “After looking for him all day, there he was, staring up at me out of the exhibiting case,” said Broad. Excited by the find,Broad asked his students to continue his search. They combed old newspapers and other materials for clues. Gradually,a picture came into view.Captain Alfred Edwin McKay joined the British Royal Flying Corps in 1916. He downed ten enemy planes, outlived his entire squadron(中队)as a WWI flyer, spent some time as a flying instructor in England, then returned to the front, where he was eventually shot down over Belgium and killed in December 1917. But theres more to his story. “For a brief time in 1916 he was probably the most famous pilot in the world,” says Broad. “He was credited with downing Oswald Boelcke, the most famous German pilot at the time
