Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said.”I did as he told me and to my surprise, I discovered that about half the things were true.I brought the list back to my dad. He refused to take it. “Thats just for you,” he said. “You know better than anyone else the truth about yourself. When something said about you is true, youll find it will be helpful to you. Dont shut your ears. Listen to them all, but hear the truth and do what you think is right.”Many years have passed. The situation often appears in my mind. CMost city parks are places where you can escape from big, ugly structures of metal and stone. The Manhattan High Line is different. Raised 25 feet above the ground, this large metal structure once supported a rail line. The line opened in 1934 to bring trains directly into factories. It was hardly used after the 1960s, and much of it was torn down. However, one part remained in a region of Manhattan called Chelsea. Chelsea was becoming high-class as restaurants, art galleries and apartments were built, but the ugly railway structure remained as a dead weight. Everyone knew that at some time, it would have to be removed. But the High Line was not destroyed. In fact, now the old rail line serves as one of the most peaceful places in the city. It holds an elevated(高架的) park, with beautiful gardens and great views of the city. The idea to turn the rail line into a park came from Joshua David and Robert Hammond. In 1999, they attended a meeting to decide how to deal with the High Line. David and Hammond were the only people at the meeting interested in saving the historical structure. Later on, when they asked railway officials to take them up to look at the High Line, they saw a mile and a half of wild flowers growing in the middle of the city, and they realized that the High Line had potential(潜力) to become a park. There was growing interest in improving city centers, and so the project quickly developed and money for construction was easily collected. The first section of the High Line opened in 2009 and immediately became popular with tourists and locals alike. Each part of the park has a different atmosphere. Some areas are like balconies(阳台) with wonderful city views. Where the rail line goes between buildings, trees are thickly planted. Other sections have wide lawns(草坪) and walkways planted with wild flowers. Only the final section remains the way it has been for the last fifty years.9. The underlined part “a dead weight” (Paragraph 1) means_. A something with potential to be betterBsomething with historical interestCsomething which is a danger to peopleDsomething useless which slows progress10. Why did David and Hammond originally want to save the High Line? A They thought it would make a good park.BThey thought it had historical value.CThey wanted to reopen the train line.DThey were interested in improving the city.11. Why were people easily persuaded by David and Hammonds idea? AThey wanted to see the wild flowers too. BThey realized the High Line was historically important.CThey knew the project would bring in much money. DThey wanted to make cities nicer places.12. What is the text mainly about? A . An unlikely place for a park. BProtection of cultural relics. CImproving city transport. DClosing a train line. D In the 1960s Professor Bolin predicted (预测) that the “greenhouse effect”, caused by an increase in the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere, would lead to important changes in the Earths climate. At the time his prediction were regarded as science fiction. But it is now gradually agreed that the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will double from 0.03% to 0.06% in the next 50years and that temperatures worldwide will rise by 2C. Although a temperature rise of 2 may not seem significant, the local effects may be much greater: in polar regions a rise of 10 by 2025 is expected and in Northern Europe a rise of 4. Indeed the first effects were expected to be felt before the end of the 20th century. But how does the“greenhouse effect” operate and why should such a tiny proportion (比例) of CO2 have such a harmful effect? When living creatures breathe out or when things are burned, CO2 enters the atmosphere. Until recently all of this was absorbed by plants, which converted(转化)it back into oxygen. However, the balance of nature has been disturbed. In power stations, in factories and in our cars, we are burning more and more fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) and this produces huge quantities of CO218 billion tons of it enter the atmosphere every year. Added to this, the destruction of forests means that less CO2 can be converted into oxygen by plants. So, the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere is increasing every year.13. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage? ANo changes in climate will become noticeable for 50 years or more.BProfessor Bolins predictions were taken seriously in the first place. COnly a small portion of the atmosphere consists of carbon dioxide.DThe rise in temperature will probably be 2 degrees in every part of the world.14. The amount of CO2 in the atmosphere is increasing every year because. AMore forests are destroyed and more fossil fuels are burned. BCarbon dioxide is produced when we burn things.CCarbon dioxide is produced when we breathe.DThe global temperature keeps rising.15. The underlined word “operate” in the third paragraph most probably means “”.
