It created the storm of scandal and protest on its publication. Disappointed and disgusted, he gave up novel creation, never writing one novel, and turned the reminder of his life to poetry. The nature of the novel was completely tragic. Social factors, weakness in the personality of the hero and the heroine, factors on the side of the writer himself were responsible for the tragic nature of this novel. Introduction (一级标题:阿拉伯数字顶格,数字与标题之间空一格,新罗马体小三,加粗; 标题第一个单词的首字母大写,其他单词除专有名词外全部小写)English writer Thomas Hardy of 19th century enjoyed great fame in literary circles for his novels, in which Jude the Obscure was his masterpiece and can be considered as one of the greatest realistic works in 19th century England. Meanwhile it represented Hardys highest achievements in his “novels of character and environment”.(正文另起一行,首行空五格,新罗马体小4号,单倍行距)This novels time span was the longest at the same time. At the beginning the protagonist Jude, only eleven years old, suffered from poverty, loneliness and distress because both of his parents were dead and he had to live with an aunt. Although he had much sentimentality the seed of pursuing grand dream and progress had already been embedded in his young soul. First he did odds and ends in his aunts bakery, and then was apprenticed to a mason. Besides hard manual labor, he taught himself and fumbled for knowledge. After overcoming numerous obstacles he came to Christerminster, which to him was a sacred place for knowledge, but as a mason he had to wander outside the high collegiate buildings. Finally, he died with his dream unfinished at thirty years old. There are two clues distinctly running through the novel: Judes pursuit for his career and Jude and Sues pursuit for their love, in other words, ideal relationship between two sexes. The author attempted to expound honestly that kind of torments, persecution and disaster suffered by people that followed closely mankinds strongest desire and to reveal frankly the tragedy of failing to have ones wish fulfilled by describing the conflicts between protagonists will to pursue bright, ideal life and dark actuality in which there was no hope. This paper intends to discuss the inevitability of tragedy in this novel.2. Causes for the tragedy (标题之间必须有叙述性文字,不允许从一级标题直接跳到二级标题,或从二级标题直接跳到三级标题)Jude the Obscure is one of the greatest tragic novels written by Thomas Hardy. There are several factors accounting for the tragedy of Jude, the central character of the novel2.1 Social factor (二级标题:阿拉伯数字顶格,如:序号为2的一级标题下,二级标题序号为2.1, 2.2.等,数字与标题之间空一格,标题用新罗马体四号,加粗;正文另起一行,首行空五格,新罗马体小4号,单倍行距)19th century was an era when modern science such as astronomy, physics, and biology was flourishing. Modern scientific knowledge and new philosophic powerless in everything. Under the. and tradition, personal struggle was very weak and his discuss the inevitability of tragedy in this novel. therefore, was best used to annotate his pursuit and failure and even his last death in loneliness.2.2 Environmental factor His first dream was to go to Christminster, enter the university and become a scholar having great learning. In his young eyes that city became the incarnation of learning and was full of air of mystery. Even the old second-hand books sent to him from Phillotson would “have the charm of being mellowed by the university atmosphere”. Everyone can have a dream and if only this dream does not cause harm to others and himself, we should offer support and encouragement. To Judes dream, we, of course, have no different idea and meanwhile he should be respected and admired for his persistence. The problem lied in that the university was not so perfect as what he had thought, and, on the contrary, academic degree became a signboard signing not knowledge but wealth, because the door of university was only open for the sons and younger brothers of rich people. Jude was only a poor mason and obviously his dream and his social status were unbecoming. So the dean of the college needed only one letter to let him give up his dream, which he had embraced since childhood, and make his dream nihility like soap bubble. He saw what a curious and cunning glamour the neighborhood of the place had exercised over him. In fact all of us have noticed that it is Phillotson, the village schoolmaster, who played an important part in Judes dream to be a scholar, but after all these years the meeting with Mr. Phillotson should be of this homely complexion destroyed at one stroke the halo which had surrounded the schoolmasters figure in Judes imagination ever since their parting. It created in him at the same time sympathy with Phillotson as an obviously much chastened and disappointed man.2.2.1 Natural environment (三级标题:阿拉伯数字顶格,如:序号为2.2的二级标题下,三级标题序号为2.2.1, 2.2.2.等,数字与标题之间空一格,标题用新罗马体小四号,加粗;正文另起一行,首行空五格,新罗马体小4号,单倍行距).5.
