Book 8 Unit One A Land of DiversityReading CaliforniaTeaching Aids: a computer, a projector, a blackboard, some chalk and a screenTeaching objectives:Three objectives are set for this lesson: 1. To help students learn about the history of California2. To improve students reading ability, especially fast reading ability3. To develop students culture awareness Teaching Important & Difficult points:The teaching important point is to enable students to use skills, such as skimming and scanning, to improve their reading ability.The teaching difficult point is to enable students to explain why California is such a multicultural state.Teaching procedures:The teaching procedures are divided into eight steps. Step One Warming-upIn this part, the song “Hotel California” will be played for the students and they are asked about their impressions of California. Meanwhile, some pictures of California will be showed and a brief introduction of the city, such as the location, the capital and famous view spots, will be given. To lead the students into study of the text, three pictures extracted from the text will be showed to the students and they are asked to make predictions about the contents. )1. Listen to the song “Hotel California” Brainstorm: What occurs to you when it comes to California?(Enjoy some pictures of California)2. Prediction Look at three pictures and predict what the text is about.Step Two Skimming: In this part, students are asked to skim the text and sum up main idea in about 30 words. After the students provide their answers, learning tips as following will be given to the students: 1. Focus on the first paragraph2. Read the title and the heading and predictThe passage tells us _Learning tips: _ _Aim of this step is to practice students skimming skill in reading English passage.Step Three Scanning: Choose the right answer.Now students are asked to scan the text quickly and choose the right answers for the following questions.1. California is also the least multicultural state in the US.C. It is likely that Native Americans were living in California at least fifteen thousand years ago.D. Volunteers are invited to present their answers to the whole class. The questions are:Why is California such a multicultural community? Do you want to live there? Why?Step Six Structure AnalysisIn this part, students are asked to analyze the structures of the following difficult sentences extracted from the text. They are required to find out how many clauses the sentence includes and what they are.1. Exactly when the first people arrived in what we now know as California (two object clauses), no one really knows.2. Scientists believe that (object clause) these first settlers crossed the Bering Strait from Asia to Alaska by means of a land bridge which (attributive clause) existed in prehistoric times.3. Although Chinese immigrants began to arrive during the Gold Rush Period (adverbial clause), it was the building of the railway from the west to the east coast that brought even larger numbers to California in the 1860s (emphatic sentence).Aim for this step is to review knowledge about clauses and tell the students how to use grammar knowledge in understanding difficult sentences. Step Seven Further ReadingIn this part, students are required to read the passage in workbook, Page 51 and choose right answers for the following five questions I design. 1.
