The Joy Luck Club The Joy Luck Club is Amy Tan s first book and when it is released it enjoyed a good reputation this book provides a good plat for Americans to learn about an oriental country which is distant from America and lead them to understand their western countries from a different perspective by comparing the culture between china and America which accounts for its being so popular The book mainly tells stories of 4 women and their offspring Suyuan Woo An mei Hsu Lindo Jong and Ying ying St Clair are four mothers from china and June Woo Rose Hsu Jordan Waverly Jong and Lena St Clair Are their America born daughters Suyuan Woo establish the joy luck club and she aims at bringing four people together to play mahjong Before the four women came to America they each have their own stories that have life long influences on them Suyuan Woo has a husband who was an kuomintang officer Her husband took her and their two baby twins to Kweilin for their safety when Japan invaded china however she finally had to escape from Kweilin to chunngking Unfortunately she had a bad attack of malaria she knew she were likely to die and she hoped that her two babies would be kept by others when she was still alive so she made a decision to abandon her babies with agony when she arrived at another continent across the pacific ocean she lost everything except her three silk clothes and a swan feather which symbolized hope and future Lindo Jong s story is not as good as Suyuan Woo s when Lindo Jong was a little girl she was arranged to marry to a boy who she had never met until she lived with him several years later From then on her mother treated her not as her own daughter but as others daughter in law so that she could no longer undergo such sorrow and loss she knew Lindo Jong would leave her sooner or later and she took care of Lindo Jong more carefully on that day when they depart from each other her mother said Lindo Jong would live happier and better than her and Lindo Jong beared it in mind After her marriage she suffered enough from her miserable life because of her not being pregnant and finally she came up with a idea to help herself get rid of this family which won herself a ticket to Shanghai starting a new and different life Ying ying St Clair from a rich and powerful family in Wushi began her tragedy with marrying a playboy her husband had affairs with another woman just after her first baby s birth what was worse her husband insulted her badly and treated her cruelly with those hurt she lived in despair Afterwards her life in this family in the old china ended up with an abortion for revenging her husband Then she left these sad experiences behind and went to America to escape her past The last woman An mei Hsu whose mother married a rich businessman in Tientsin as a concubine witnessed her mother s unlucky life in a prestigious family and her mother s death she went through so many changes happening in her grandma mother and the conflicts puzzles fear and despair when she hadn t grown up she might have understand something may not be reached by others in a whole life All of these four women witnessed or experienced by themselves the tragedy of the old china of the traditional women in china they tried to escape fight against and search for a new life a new world in which they can live equally with men depend on themselves stick to their own values choose their own life and master their destiny America a country across pacific ocean different from china is the very place for them to bury their past and start a new life And they had determined to pass their hope to their next generation as Suyuan Woo wished her daughter could speak perfect American English and she intended to set up a club named the joy luck club to raise money to raise spirits by playing mahjong with other three women the most important is they could forget their roots culture and believe it would bring happiness in this small world built in the joy luck club In addition to these mothers memories back to their youth The book continues on with the stories of these women s daughters telling stories of their lives being raised by mothers who were immigrants and being integrated into American society In stead of in china at that time when the girls were considered worthless boys received enough attraction these daughters enjoyed adequate education and concern also accompanied by lots of stress and upset which wouldn t occur in old china Suyuan Woo An mei Hsu Lindo Jong and Ying ying St Clair were four good friends and all of them have had decent lives in this new land Their daughters were brought up with high expectations and high desire which may have done more harms than good and in the way their mothers believe is right To their disappointment their daughter did can speak perfect American English as well as drink much coca cola The members of the joy luck club competed among each other to compare whose daughter is more successful and more clever Under these circumstances Waverly who was believed to have talent for chess were humiliated by her mother s showing off and the conflicts and gab between them were more and more unrepairable And Clair remembers when her mother kept having a feeling to rearrange furniture only to find out she was pregnant Rose Hsu Jordan has fallen in love with a successful man and she stoops to her husband desiring nothing and gradually losing her identity becoming one of Chinese women s tragedy Besides Jing Mei strives a lot for her mother Suyuan s high expectation to be a perfect child and Jing Mei also suffers a lot from her diffidence e and comfortlessness created by her mother s constant comparing her to other children These mothers all arrange for their daughters a shortcut to grow up along the track they have developed That is the point the circumstances and the way they were educated by their mother which adapted from china compels them with various conflicts and contradictions with their mother These daughters are unable to understand their mother s behavior their points of view They think they have taken too much burden from their mothers and the more they love mothers the more they hate them Back to these four mothers their own mothers were born and living in china for the whole time who were the total victims of the old and miserable times While Suyuan Woo An mei Hsu Lindo Jong and Ying ying St Clair all had chances to leave for America to choose their own life a new start However no matter what they do they can never be free from the shadow thrown by their past and the roots of Chinese culture have taken deeply in their mind The way they educate their daughters the life they arrange for their next generation the expectations they place on their offspring all make their daughters misunderstand them and bring some bad and lifelong influence on them Maybe to some extents both these mothers and their daughters are victims of times and tradition June Woo Rose Hsu Jordan Waverly Jong and Lena St Clair these four girls went through unhappy childhood unfortunate marriage they wander in the circle which has puzzled their mothers Not until their mothers tell their past and show their hardships anguish to them do they figure out what they should do by taking these bygone as a mirror to find back themselves In the end Rose no longer yields to her love and her husband makes up with her again Lena has determined to break up with her finance and receives true love which can bring real happiness to her As for June when her mother Suyuan died she takes the place of her to host the club and finally she learns more
