When my parents bought the house, in 1982, they were only two years older than I am now. I tried to imagine myself in two years, ready to settle down and buy the house Id still be living in almost 30 years later. It seemed ridiculous. On a practical level, theres no way I could afford to buy a house anytime soon. More importantly, I wouldnt want to. Im not sure where Ill be living in two years, or what kind of job Ill have. And I dont think Ill be ready to settle down and stay in one place. So this is probably the generation gap that divides my friends and me from our parents. When our parents were our age, theyd gotten their education, chosen a career, and were starting to settle into responsible adult lives. My friends and I “Generation Y” still arent sure what we want to do with our lives. Whatever we end up doing, we want to make sure were happy doing it. Wed rather take risks first, try out different jobs, and move from one city to another until we find our favorite place. Wed rather spend our money on travel than put it in a savings account. This casual attitude toward responsibility has caused some critics to call my generation “arrogant”, “impatient”, and “overprotected”. Some of these complaints have a point. As children we were encouraged to succeed in school, but also to have fun. We grew up in a world full of technological innovation: cell phones, the Internet, instant messaging, and video games. Our parents looked to rise vertically(垂直的)-starting at the bottom of the ladder and slowly making their way to the top, on the same track, often for the same company. That doesnt apply to my generation. Because of that, it may take us longer than our parents to arrive at responsible, stable adulthood. But thats not necessarily a bad thing. In our desire to find satisfaction, we will work harder, strive for ways to keep life interesting, and gain a broader set of experiences and knowledge than our parents generation did. It has reduced car crashes on some roads by nearly 75 percent using a simple optical illusion. But stripes, called chevrons(人字形), painted on the roads make drivers think that they are driving faster than they really are, and thus drivers slow down. Now the American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety in Washington D.C. is planning to repeat Japans success. Starting next year, the foundation will paint chevrons and other patterns of stripes on selected roads around the country to test how well the patterns reduce highway crashes.Too great speed plays a major role in as much as one fifth of all serious traffic accidents, according to the foundation. To help reduce those accidents, the foundation will conduct its tests in areas where speed-related risks are the greatest curves, exit slopes, traffic circles, and bridges. Some studies suggest that straight, horizontal bars(水平杆)painted across roads can initially cut the average speed of drivers in half. However, traffic often returns to full speed within months as drivers become used to seeing the painted bars.Chevrons, scientists say, not only give drivers the impression that they are driving faster than they really are but also make a lane appear to be narrower. The result is a longer lasting reduction in highway speed and the number of traffic accidents.36. The passage mainly discusses _.A. a new type of optical illusion B. a new pattern for painting highwaysC. a new way of training driversD. a new way of highway speed control【答案】D 【解析】主旨大意题。通读全文,我们可以知道,在高速公路上画各种线是为了让司机觉得车速过快,从而达到控制车速的目的。37. Its not magic its magnets (磁). And its close to reality. In Virginia USA the fall of 2002, a train with no wheels traveled on air and carried college students across their campus. In Japan, a whisper-quiet railway engine hovered and raced at 350 miles per hour using magnets and electricity as the power. And in China, a magnet train line linked Shanghai with nearby Pudong Airport. These trains use magnetic levitation (悬浮) technology, “maglev” for short. They use the same rules as the magnets you pick up at home or school: opposite poles of magnets attract each other, and like poles repel each other. How does it work? Powerful magnets on the bottom of the train repel magnets on the track, which is actually just a magnet-filled guiding way. With a magnetic field of sufficient fo
