Another Travel -A Brief Analysis in Similarities and Difference Between Gullivers travel and Robinson CrusoeAbstract: In Gullivers travel, Jonathan Swift has described a wonderful world, there are 4 wonderful countries:Brobdingnag、Lilliput、Laputa and Houyhnhnms. According to describe life of the four countries, Swift not only provides an interesting and adventurous travel experience, but also bitterly satirized contradictions of British society in18th century. There is another book called Robinson Crusoe was appeared almost at a time, there are some aspects of Robinson Crusoe is in common with Gullivers travel. Surely, there are also differences between the two books. In this article, Ill give a brief analysis by comparing the two works through politics、idealism 、theme、technique of expression.Key words: adventure comparison realism politics Introduction: In 18th, travel literature was popular in British society. The rise of travel literature was connected closely with expansionism and colonialism of Europe. With the geographical discovery and the development of seamanship, at the end of 15th century, Europe began to explore in the biggest scale. In the 18th century, Europe had built overseas colonial hegemony. 2006 During this time, adventurers not only took back countless fortune, but also excellent travel stories and interesting adventurous experiences, which attracted people deeply and made them eager to understand the mysterious world It provided writers the most appropriate materials, therefore it formed the most important part of travel literature. 1999 In this time, Britain appeared two great litterateur ,Jonathan Swift and Daniel Defoe. The two published books had many similarities as well as differences, then lets do some simple analysis.1、Political FeaturesIn 18th century, Britains capitalist system had built up and domestic political was not stable. With the development of capitalism economy, as well as influenced by the industrial revolution, productivity and labor force was liberated and improved highly 2006. Because of that, overcapacity became serious day by day, capitalists had to exploit new markets to sell productions. The opening of new route met their demand in a point, at that time, capitalism expansion began In this context, Daniel Defoe written Robinson Crusoe, its no doubt that the book had taken peoples fancy. Everything been described in the book was wonderful, it included conquest、adventure、occupation and fortune. The description in the book seems had fatal attraction for the people who long for overseas world. After Defoes success, another writer, Jonathan Swift, at a very nearly time, also written a travel literature, which named Gullivers travel. The travel in the book was also fantastic, in addition to romantic color. The similarity between these two works is background. With the development of capitalism, more and more people dreamed to own as much money as possible and plunder better means of production and bigger market, the appearance of Robinson Crusoe had greatly encourage this group of people undoubtedly. The same to Gullivers travel. As a travel novel, the book also propagated a spirit of adventure. We can find that there are also differences in comparing the two books, one of the differences between the two books is writers attitude in Britains politics. In Robinson Crusoe, the writer eulogized the protagonist with enthusiasm. When encounter life-threatening condition, Robinson never give up but find the way to survive quickly. In this book, Robinson was regard as the representative of bourgeoisie. The writer described him as a pioneer, which was a wise and brave man. In fact, Robinson was actually a colonist, which was full of desire. According to Robinson, we may find that the writer, Daniel Defoe, believe in evil colonial expansion, and this is one of what Jonathan Swift satire. In another travel book, Gullivers travel, the writer has criticized some of the political phenomenon. J In Gullivers travel, Swift has described 4 countries: Lilliput、Brobdingnag、Houyhnhnms and Laputa. In the 4 totally different countries, the protagonist, Gulliver, has finished fantastic journey. When he get to Lilliput, he finds that the factionalism is serious, neighbouring countries are incompatible with each other and continuous colonial expansion. Besides, people there is deceitful and ridiculous. In Swifts eyes, Lilliput is the epitome of Britain, thus the description of Lilliput is actually satire Britain, which government is in utter disorder and hypocritical. In Brobdingnag, the writer even show clearly that Britain is filled with greedy、ambition and atrocity. In Houyhnhnms, according to describe the peaceful life of the world which without money and army, the writer has expressed his dissatisfaction of pecuniary interest among people in capitalist society. At the last station, Gulliver get to Laputa. he has seen kinds of meaningless scientific researches here. The writer has satired pseudoscience in Britain.in reality. So far the travel has finished, we could feel Jonathan Swifts explicit manner in this novel, and the differences between Robinson Crusoe and Gullivers travel in politics is clearly.2、Personal Character FeatureA s travel literature, except wonderful adventure experiences, personal characters features are also memorable. In this two books, the similarity in this part is the protagonists courage and wisdom. In Robinson Crusoe, when Robinson waken up and found he was on a desert island, he made himself calm down quickly and tried his best to find food and carry materials from the ship. He built house, made living things by hand, planted crops and raised livestock. In the desert island, Robinson has created a peaceful homeland and lived affluent. This is the embodiment of his wisdom of life. When he met cruel savage were hunting down Friday, he has showed his formidable courage and saved Friday without hesitation. All of these would support the point that Robinson is a wise and brave man. He ruled the island like the king of the land, which is powerful and sacrosanct杨丹. For Gullivers travel, we can also find Gullivers courage just like a warrior. In Lilliput, in spite of the citizens impertinence and unfreundlich when he first arrived, he still helped the poor dog to resist enemy. When encounter crisis he always try his best to solve problem and never give up. Just because of that, he can head off the danger every time. He is as brave and wise as Robinson. In the other hand, Robinson and Gulliver also have difference in personal character. For Robinson, he is full of the enthusiasm for work. He built boats for several years in order to get back Britain, he planted grain and risen livestock to avoid starvation. He was ready for himself all the time. In a word, Robinson is a totally pragmatist For Gulliver, in comparison, he is a follower of romanticism, which is always confident and full of exploring. Even though he was slandered and hurt in Lilliput, he still helped others when they need him. This is the difference between the two protagonists personal character.3、Idealism FeatureLast but not least, the two books are full of idealism, no matter the ideal place of desert island or the fantastic Houyhnhnms. In the desert island, Robinson built his kingdom step by step, he has his own land、fortune and servant, he owned everything he need, thus he lived a rich life. The life in the desert island is free and comfortable; this is a kind of ideal life杜苗苗. Similarly, what Gulliver had met in Houyhnhnms was also a kind of ideal life. There is no money and army, thus there in no fight for interests and enemy. The king of Houyhnhnms is merciful and wise, he ruled his kingdom in perfect order and his people are virtuous. Sunshine makes this country bright and wonderful. This is a no more perfect ideal place. But in Robinson Crusoe , all of Robinson behavior is for survive. He had to go hunting for hunger, to learn to make a fire for driving away cold and beasts, to occupy the island for inhabitancy. However, Robinson Crusoe has shown intense individualism. Robinsons spirit of exploit is actually a symbol of colonialism, he always in pursuit of personal interests and long for possession, he takes development and expansion as the ultimate goal. The ideal life is full of realism and individualism. In contrast, Gullivers life in Houyhnhnms is based on realism and the writer used fairy tale to criticize the dark real
