Heres a moviea sharp, sugar-rush of fun thats guaranteed to entertain the entire family. With some terrific computer-generated effects, a great cast and a fun-packed storyline, Robots is the best animated film (动画片) since The Incredibles. Yep, it really is that good.Set in a world populated by robots, Ewan McGregor plays Rodney Copperbottom, a young robot who leaves his small-town home to pursue his dream of becoming an inventor. But after arriving in Robot City, his hopes of getting a job at Bigweld Industries are destroyed when he learns the firm has been taken over by the evil Ratchet (Greg Kinnear).Egged on by his controlling mum, Madame Gasket (Jim Broadbent), Ratchet plans to reduce half of Robot Citys citizens to scrap metal by refusing to sell the spare parts they need to survive.Instead, he wants to make a fortune selling expensive upgrades that few can afford. As he says, “Why be you when you can be new?”Aided by a few misfit robots known as the Rustlesincluding Robin Williams as the cowardly (胆小的)Fender (“Im made of a metal called Afraidium”)Rodney must track down the firms founder, Bigweld (Mel Brooks), and convince him to save the city from Ratchets plans. The first thing thatll strike you about the movie is the thought thats gone into creating Robot City. Its a wondrous world full of mechanical marvels including wind-up cars and walking streetlamps. Also terrific are the special effects. This might be an animated movie but at times youll catch yourself thinking its really a live-action film.Of course, there have been plenty of animated movies that looked the part but were let down by a weak storyline (see Shark Tale, for example). But Robots grips (扣人心弦) right from the start thanks to a heart-warming and thoroughly engaging plot that never bores. My only complaints are with Williams who, as usual, has a one-in-10 success rate with his jokes. Also a letdown is a romantic subplot between Rodney and a shapely robot called Cappy (Halle Berry) that doesnt go anywhere. Complains aside, this is a mechanical marvel thatll have you bolted firmly to your seat.BEST QUOTE(引述): Fender: “Even though you had a discouraging day, just remember theres another one coming tomorrow.” BEST BIT: Check out those amazing images. WORST BIT: Robin Williams, character does an unfunny Britney Spears dance routine.IF YOU LIKEDIce Age, The Incredibles, Toy Story. Consider the case of a young friend of mine, who was on his trapped way to work shortly after receiving an ultimatum(最后通牒) about the job. Although there was a good reason for Sams being late-serious illness at home-he decided that this by-now-familiar excuse wouldnt work any longer. His supervisor was probably already pacing up and down preparing a dismissal speech. Yes, the boss was, Sam entered the office at 9:35. The place was as quiet as a locker room; everyone was hard at work. Sams supervisor came up to him. Suddenly, Sam forced a grin and stretched out his hand. How do you do! he said. Im Sam Maynard. Im applying for a job, which, I understand, became available just 35 minutes ago. Does the early bird get the worm? The room exploded in laughter, except that the supervisor had to clamp off a smile and walked back to his office. Sam Maynard had saved his job-with the only tool that could win, a laugh. Humor is a most effective, yet frequently neglected, means of handling the difficult situations in our lives. It can be used for patching up differences, apologizing, saying no, criticizing, getting the other fellow to do what you want without his losing face. For some jobs, its the only tool that can succeed. It is a way to discuss subjects so sensitive that serious dialog may start a quarrel. For example, many believe that comedians on television are doing more today for racial and religious tolerance than people in any other forum.1. Why was Sam late for his job? A. Because he was seriously ill at home. B. Because he received an ultimatum. C. Because he was busy applying for a new job. D. Because he was caught in a traffic jam. 由第一段第二句话 “, who was on his trapped way to work shortly after receiving an ultimatum about the job.” D。2. What is the main idea of this passage? A. Sam Maynard saved his job with humor. B. Humor is important in our lives. C. Early bird can get the worm. D. Humor can solve racial discriminations. 结合文章第一段首句 “A lot of us lose lifes tough battles by starting a frontal attack-when a touch of humor might well enable us to win.”和最后一段首句 “Humor is a most effective, yet frequently neglected, means of handling the difficult situations in our lives.” B。3. The phrase clamp off in Paragraph 3 means_. A. try to hold back B. pretend to set C. send off D. give out 答案解析:答案为A。 这个笑话惹得办公室的人哄堂大笑,由 “except that the supervisor had to clamp off a smile and walked back to his office.” A。4. Which of the following statements can we infer from the passage? A. Many lose lifes battles for they are always late. B. Sam was supposed to come to his office at 8:30. C. It wasnt the first time that Sam came late for his work.D. Humor is the most effective way of solving problems. 由第一段第二句话 “Consider the case of a young friend of mine, who was on his trapped way to work shortly after receiving an ultimatum about the job.” Im applying for a job, which, I understand, became available just 35 minutes ago.” 阅读理解-ALONDON Britain awoke on Easter Monday to a period of mourning for the Queen Mother, who died over the weekend after a life spanning a century of noisy and evident change. The 101-year-old royal matriarch died in her sleep last Saturday with Queen Elizabeth, her elder and only surviving daughter, at her bedside. For a woman who was one of the best-known figures in Britain for more than 80 years from the era of tinted portraits on tin biscuit boxes and cigarette cards to the age of the Internet, the Queen Mother remained an enigmatic(不可思议的) and elusive(躲避的) figure. She achieved such a respect through aeons(永世, 亿万年) of, first, fawning and, later, intrusive media fascination, by remaining almost entirely silent. Her private thoughts were never paraded(炫耀) in public. What the public saw was a charming and benign elderly lady, adept at winning the admiration of press photographers, whom she always favoured with a particular smile. CHINAs third unmanned spacecraft, Shenzhou , landed safely in central Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Monday afternoon, after orbiting the earth 108 times in slightly less than a week. The craft, which lifted off from Jiuquan in Gansu Province last Monday night, landed after successfully conducting a chain of flight and scientific experiments over a period of 162 hours. A powerful earthquake jolted Taiwan, killing five construction workers, authorities(官方) said. What the public saw was a charming and benign elderly lady, adept at winning the admiration of press photographers, whom she always favoured with a particular smile.” 2. It can be inferred that _.A. the craft landed in central Inner Mongolia unexpectedlyB. it took the craft at least 2 hours to orbit the earth onceC. the Chinese scientists did a lot of experiments in spaceD. China was successful in sending an unmanned spacecraft into space答案解析:答案为D。 3.
