English translation of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM).For itsdistinctive culture,translation of traditional Chinese medicine hasspecial features.In-depth observation and explanationwill be done inlight of the culturaleffects in TCM translation.Several casesare givenin themiddle part of this thesis toexploretheeffect ofunique culture of traditional Chinese medicineon translation.It language.Deeply locatedin culture,manyculture-specific termsinTCMconcepts can not betranslated faithfullyand adequatelysuchasYin,Yang,Qi,Sanjiao etc.In TCMtranslation keepingnationality isimportantinordertoreserve itsTCMculturecharacteristic.However,only partoftheinformation hasits counterpartin English.And otherseither haveno equivalentsor toonational toabandon theiroriginal flavor.In thiscase,transliteration playsan importantrole.Transliteration isfrequently used inTCMtranslation.Aording toLi Zhaoguo (xx),transliteration isprobably theonly wayto keepthe uniquenessofTCM,andhealso admitsthat itisthelast notthe leastchoice intranslation,because translationcauses greatchallenge for the readersanditcannotconvey theinformation sufficiently.The culture-specific termsare alwaystranslated withphoic lettersortheterms establishedby popularusage thatis followed by explanation.For example,triple energizers(a collectiveterm forthe threeportions ofthe bodycavity,through whichthe visceralqi istransformed,also widelyknown astriple burners).And yin-yang(the generaldescriptive termsforthetwo oppositeplementary andinter-related cosmicforces foundin allmatter innature.The ceaselessmotion ofboth yinand yanggivesriseto allchanges seenintheworld).(WHO InternationalStandard TerminologiesonTCMinWesternPacific Region)Nationality embodiesthethoughtof harmonyin diversity.There arefive basicrequirements inTCMtranslationwhichareimportant toreserve itsnationality andfaithfulness:proficiency inEnglish andability ofregular shouldhave theseabilities inordertodo excellentTCMtranslation.5.3Readersaeptance Thetranslation processinvolves notonly translatorsbutalsothetargetreaderswork.Therefore translatorsshould notignore the readersaeptance.The aimoftranslationistospread thethought,theoryandcultureofone countryto anotherwhile thereaders havetheir ownthought andhistorical knowledge.Thats whyone thousandreaders haveone thousanddifferent interpretationsof Hamletwhen confrontedwiththesame version.In TCMtranslation weusuallyusethe followedmethod toensure readersaeptance.Find theproper equivalentif thereis equivalencebetween TCMterminologyand Westernmedicierminology.If not,use transliterationfollowed bydetailed explanation.TCMtranslationis differentfrom otherterminology translationbecause thestructure ofTCM languageis obviouslydifferentwithEnglish language.For example,some translatorstranslate BiZheng(痹症)into arthralgiasyndrome,if wetranslate itback weget themeaning ofpain ofjoints.In fact,itisbetter totranslate itwith transliterationfollowedbyexplanation“joint andmuscular disorderswith paindue towind,cold ordampness”.6.Conclusion Ithasbeenmore thanthree centuriessince thepioneers workedon introducingTCM abroad.At thesametime,withWesternmedicine springinginto China,cross-cultural municationhas increasingbetween ChineseandWesterncountries.In modernsociety,TCMisgetting tobe anobject ofincreasing curiosityintheWesternworldfor itsexcellent curativeeffect andlittle side-effect.English languageand Chineselanguage belongto twodifferent languagefamilies andreflect differentcultures sotherearemany barrierswhentranslatingTCMintoEnglish.Especially TCMhasitsdistinctive nationalityand philosophy.In mostcases theequivalent effectis difficulttobeachieved.Translators dealing with TCMtranslation haveto fulfillthe gapbetweenthesourcelanguagecultureand targetlanguageculture.Cultural factorsinTCMtranslationareimportant aspectswhich directlyaffect itsfaithfulnessandexpressiveness.Either the translationofterminologies ortheculture-specific termsofTCMtheory arethemostplex anddifficult part.In considerationof culture,three translation standards areexplored aboveaordingtothe scholarstranslationstandards.In fact,inordertobea qualifiedtranslator oneshould familiarwiththecultureofsourcelanguageandtargetlanguage,pay attentiontotheculture-specific text,readersaeptance,and twodifferent culturalattitudes andsoon.All strategiescanbeusedinTCMtranslationto solvetheculturalelements.When translatorsdealingwitha specialculture-specific term,they
