The Framingham Study gathers information about physical and mental health, personal behavior and diet. At first, the study involved about 5,000 people in the American state of Massachusetts. Now, more than 12,000 individuals are taking part.Information from the Framingham Study showed earlier that happiness can spread from person to person. So can behaviors like littering and the ability to stop smoking.University of Chicago psychologist John Cacioppo led the recent study. He and other researchers attempted to show how often people felt lonely. They found that the feeling of loneliness spread through social groups.Having a social connection with a lonely person increased the chances that another individual would feel lonely. In fact, a friend of a lonely person was 52% more likely to develop feelings of loneliness. A friend of that person was 25% more likely. The researchers say this shows that a person could indirectly be affected by someones loneliness. The effect was strongest among friends. Neighbors were the second most affected group. The effect was weaker on husbands and wives, and brothers and sisters. The researchers also found that loneliness spread more easily among women than men.The New York Times newspaper reports that, on average, people experience feelings of loneliness about 48 days a year. It also found that every additional friend can decrease loneliness by about five percent, or two and a half fewer lonely days.Loneliness has been linked to health problems like depression and sleeping difficulties. The researchers believe that knowing the causes of loneliness could help in reducing it.The study suggests that people can take steps to stop the spread of loneliness. They can do this by helping individuals they know who may be experiencing loneliness. The result can be helpful to the whole social group.26. What is true about the Framingham Study?A. A wrong turn, a hurtful word said to a loved one, a bad move these we all commit as we walk our lifes journeys, no matter how careful we are in our steps. Once committed, we can no longer undo many of these mistakes, especially because unlike with our computer documents, each thing we do and say has vast impact as they involve not just us the file that we are working on but also others, the unopened files and computer programs in our system. So I guess our lifes mistakes are not like our pencil scrawls that can be effectively corrected with an eraser, or errors on our computer works that can be undone with an undo button. But there are effective and reliable tools we can useAPOLOGY and FORGIVENESS. Simply click the APOLOGY button when you have committed a mistake that has hurt a loved one and the words “Im Sorry” will flash on the other persons screen. But, you have to be truly sorry and you must be prepared not to commit the same mistake again for your APOLOGY to work. Sincerity is definitely a necessary part. When someone clicks the APOLOGY button and the words “Im sorry” flash on your screen, all you have to do is click back the FORGIVENESS button. It means that you have wholeheartedly accepted the other persons APOLOGY. But not only that. You also have to click it when someone has sent you back the message “Its okay. Forget about it,” on your request of APOLOGY. It means that you are also forgiving yourself for your mistake; that you wont keep feeling so bad having committed it.And lastly, dont forget to keep clicking the SAVE button. Going through the whole process of editingof doing and undoing, of apologizing and forgiving is useless if you fail to save the LESSON for future use. Let the saved file be a reminder of the healing process you once went through to make yourself better; for you not to forget the lesson; and for others to access and learn from.36. Which of the following is TRUE?A. However careful we are, we still make mistakes in life.B. Things we do and say can affect computer programs in our system.C. We can undo lifes mistakes if we are careful enough.D. An eraser is an effective tool for our computer works.37. The APOLOGY button should be clicked when _.A. one wants to make the computer work perfectlyB. ones mistakes wont influence others any moreC. one is actually saying “Im sorry”D. one wont make the same mistake again38. We need to click the SAVE button in life because _.A. we want to go through the whole process of editingB. we need to learn a lesson from the past mistakesC. we want to make the healing process fasterD. we need to use the computer properly40. Computer and LifeHomeworkFor the employee, being placed in a position that is comfortable and meets expectations will make the job less stressful and allow a more positive outlook toward responsibilities. It beats the alternative, as going to a job that you are unhappy with could lead to tireness, burn out, depression and stress. This affects more than just your 9-to-5 routine it can hurt your family relationships, weaken friendships, and even make you turn to addictive and destructive behaviors like alcohol or drugs. The US Department of Labor suggests that jobseekers prepare for an employment search by understanding themselves and being honest about what they want and expect. Make a list of things you like to do, examine your history and evaluate the jobs and classes you enjoyed the most and why, look over your resume and see what duties your past jobs included, and be honest about what is appealing to you about the particular position you are considering.I do believe that understanding yourself and your personality type preferences can make all the difference when it comes to finding a career that you love, says Roberts, a career management coach with CareerMasters in Maine. The Labor Department offers several simplified recommendations created for high school students: If you are good at math, then look toward occupations like statistician, engineer, surveyor or actuary (保险精算师). If you love to read or write, consider becoming a librarian, desktop publisher, writer or administrative assistant. Music and arts lovers should look into acting, visual arts, music or design work. Student who enjoyed social studies can become politicians, urban planners, historians or human resource assistants. Other considerations that might be significant: Do you enjoy helping people, working with your hands, fixing things, or interacting with nature? Is it your preference to work alone or in a group?Employees who are unhappy with their current positions, dont like their work environment, feel underappreciated, or believe there is no room for advancement, owe it to themselves to consider whether changing careers is a viable alternative. Regardless of how my clients come to me, we always step back and look at where they are and how they got there, Roberts explains.
