business,it meanswe shoulddeal with the peoplefrom allover theworld.Since wehave different cultures,we shouldunderstand theircultural backgroundso that we willnot createany unnecessarymisunderstandings.So oneof thefundamental purposesof learningbusiness English is to achieve cross-cultural munication,and interactwith peoplefrom different cultural backgrounds.Through theanalysis of cross-cultural phenomenonin business English,we canlearn theetiquette and skills in business munication.We canalso knowthe cultural diversity amongdifferent countries,and graspthe knowledge andskillsneeded indealing withthe problemsof cross-cultural munication.II.Eight aspectsof cultural acquisition Ininternational business,we shouldpay moreattention to the culturaldiversity whichmay helpus avoidmany mistakes.We willintroduceeightaspectsof cultural acquisitionthatwehave learnedin businessEnglish.1.Vocabulary Thevocabulary canreflect differentculture of different countries.If youcannot understandthe culturewell,you will make manymistakes whichmay causemany misunderstandings.Take redfor example,when seeing“in thered”in businessEnglish,we maythink it is somethinggood.Because redalways meansjubilance anditis always usedas apropitious colorin celebratingoasions.But ifyou thinkso inthis phrase,you arewrong.In businessEnglish,in thered actuallymeans deficitandbeingin debt.Also theChinese“Hongcha”should beblack teain English.If youtell thewaiter you want acup ofred teawhen youare doingbusiness with foreigners,you-3-have madea foolof yourselfbefore yourpartner.It willleave abad impressionon yourpartner.2.Custom inaddressing othersDifferent countrieshave differentcustoms inaddressing others.In business munication,we Chineseaddress partneras“nin”to expressour respect.But in English,“you”is usedinaddressingany onewe speakto.In Anotherexample ofaddressing others,we Chineseare usedto usingpeoples positionto address others,such asTeacher Wang,Secretary Tang,Manager Lu,etc.But inEnglish,teacher,manager isjust a kind ofposition,and theynever usethem toaddressothers.They usuallyuse Mr.Wang,Miss Tang,or Mrs.Lu.3.Privacy WeChinese alwaysask othersabout theage,ine,and soonto show thatwe carefor others.But thepeople inEnglish speaking countries arealways disgustedwith thiskind of“care”,because theythink theseare theirprivacy.So whenwe asksomebody fromEnglish speaking countries thesequestions,they willalways say“Ah,itsasecret”!So whenwe municatewithforeignpeople,we shouldrespect theirprivacy.4.Praise WeChinese andthe westerners are almosttotally differentin theway wetreat praise.When weare praised by someone,we alwayssay“Not sogood.”“Just soso.”or“You arebetter thanme.”toshowour modesty.But whenwesternersarepraisedbyothers,they alwaysbehave veryhappily andsay“Thank you”.5.Appreciation Expressappreciation hasan importantsocial valueno matterin easternor westerncountries.In Englishspeaking countries,“thank you”is usedon almostevery oasion,and betweenevery person,even parents and children,brothers andsisters.-4-But in our country,we hardlysay“thank you”to ourparentsandbrothers andsisters.We thinkif wesay so,that meanswe regardthem asoutsiders.6.Greeting In our country,we alwaysgreet with“have youever eaten”“where doyouwant to go”and sooninour daily life.This reflectsa senseof genialityamong ourChinese.This kindof greetingwillmakethe westernersfeel abrupt,embarrassed,even displeased.Because theywould thinkthat isakindofcross-question andfeel beinginterfered in their privatelife.In westerncountries,they mostlygreet with“hello”or“good morning”“good afternoon”“good evening”aording totime intheir dailylife.7.Receiving andbeing aguest Whenwe Chineseget alongwith others,we usuallyconsider otherpeoples needsfrom oursides.Responsible guestsalways trytheir bestnot totrouble the hosts andinvolve the hosts inexpense;therefore,they rejectthe hoststreatment politely.For example,when thehosts askthe guestswhat theywant to drink,the guestsgenerally say“Im notthirsty.”or“Dont bother.”Actually,the guestsmay notmean theydont wanttodrink,just showtheir politeness.On thecontrary,the westerners,whatever the guests orthehosts,are verystraightforward.When theguests arrivein,thehostswill askwhat theywanttodrink directly.If is,theguestswill ask“what doyou have”and choosewhat theylike withoutpreamble.If not,they willsay“no,thank you.”8.Festival There are manydifferent festivalsbetween Chinaand English-speakingcountries.We have the LanternFestival,the DragonBoat Festival,andtheMid-autumn Festivaland soon.Meanwhile,they haveValentines Day,Easter Day,Thanksgiving Dayand others.The springfestival isthe mostimportant oneinourcountry likethe Christmasin theirs.To theUnited States,Canada,Australia and some EuropeanChristian-5-countries,we shouldavoid Christmasweek(usually fromDec.24to Jan.1);In Asiancountries,Spring Festival,Chinese NewYear shouldbe avoidedfor twoweeks beforeand afterthe SpringFestival.III.ProblemstobenotedIn theprocess of cultural acquisition,the followingfactors shouldbe paidattention to1.The inevitabilityof culturaldiversity Aspeople alwayssay that culture isshared,we thinkthe basesof culturesare the same butwe ignorethe slightdifference ofdifferentcultures.Thats culturaldiversity.Every countryhas itsown socialsystem,geographical environment,religion,life style,etc.That makestheir differentcultures:material culture,spiritual culture,social ideologyculture.So the culturaldiversityis inevitable.Cultural acquisitionin businessEnglish learningrequires usto aeptthe culturaldiversity andalso have an objectiveattitude towardsit.2.The undesirabilityofculturalstereotype Usuallymany peopleare prejudicedagainst othercultures.We callthatculturestereotype.It makesus usevery simplewords todescribe orsummarize businessEnglish.For example,someone saysthat all the Americanslike toeat McDonalds,all theItalians makegestures duringsaying andthe entireJapanese arehardworking.The culturalstereotype ignoresthe nationalcharacteristics oflanguage;meanwhile itis badfor ourcross-cultural munication.Cultural acquisitionrequires usto haveno prejudiceon languagestudy.3.The necessityof overeingethnocentrism incultural acquisitionDuring ourEnglish study,we cant ignorea factthat someEnglish articlesconsider thatthe western culture isalways betterthan easternculture.But actuallywe knowthat every countryandeverycountrys cultureare equal.We shouldrealize itclearly thatallthecultures canoften summarizethe culturaldiversity betweenChinese andwesternculture.Inthemeantime,we shouldbe goodat gettingcultural backgroundknowledge from the languagelearning materialsin handandwe can collecta lotof articlesand picturesof English-speakingcountriesto learnthe foreignart,historyandlocal customs;we canget anintuitive feelingsthrough Englishfilm,television,slides,video,etc.Finally,English learnersmay participateinEnglishcorners,English partiesto practicetheir Englishcultural knowledgein reallife.2.Role playRole-play appliedtoawide rangeofdifferentcultural teaching.It canbe a short dialogue.For example,students canmake shortdialogues oftwo businesspeople toshow how to greeteach other,how toinvite andhow tonegotiate,howtosay goodbyeandsoon.It canalso beashortplay;students can write theirown lines-7-reflecting themisunderstandings caused by culturaldiversity ofthe realbusiness cases.During thisperiod,the studentslearntheimportance ofcooperation andtheir cross-cultural municativepetence willgradually increase.After theperformance,the teachermay organizea discussionwith studentsto makethem
