First congratulate students to become sophomore in the university. After that, T asks them some questions about their summer vacation.(10 minutes) Such as: 1)Where did you spend your vocation? 2)What did you do in summer vocation? 3)Did you do some housework at home and help your parents? 4)Where they live in? 5)Do you like living in the countryside or living in towns? Why?T sum up and leads Ss into the first unit by saying: Different people have different ideas about whether live in the countryside or in the city. In America many people have a romantic idea of life in the countryside. They dream of starting up their own farm, of living off the land. There is a song. The song you are about to hear is all about taking a break from city life, escaping from the crowds. After listening, you should answer following questions: - What is the song about? (taking a break from city life, escaping from the crowd)- How is the song related to the theme of this unit? (The singer needs a break because the pace of life has quickened, the environment has been changed, and the old life style is gone.)(10minutes)First period教 学 内 容时间分配及备注2 Ss divide into three large groups, under each group smaller sub-groups may form. Each large group is assigned one of the following discussion topics:- Why do so many migrant workers move from the country to the city?- Why do city people buy apartments or houses in the suburbs, even in the countryside?3 After the discussion, speakers of some sub-groups report to class. T sum up like this: People change their places of living because they look for things that their previous life is unable to provide. However, once life has been changed, they miss the good old days. (15 minutes)4 Ss do Cloze B in after-text exercises to learn about Americans ideal of a country life. Then T leads in to the study of Text A. (10 minutes)While-reading tasksRead the new words at page 7 1 Words are the most important things in the text. First, Ss should familiar with New Words and Expressions in page 7. During read them, each words pronunciation must be noticed. (5 minutes) 2 After that, T picks up some Ss to read the new words and correct their pronunciations. (5 minutes) 3 Let Ss to read the new words followed by T. (5 minutes)Grasping the structure of the text: According to the text Organization, we can notice that the whole text can be divided into four parts. Later, we will listen to the tape of the text. After listening, you should catch the main idea of the text and give the whole class of each paragraphs main idea. Listen to the tape recorder.(10 minutes)After listening, T picks up several Ss to give their reports for the class and sum up the main idea by saying: the author in the text loves the life in countryside, from there he can enjoy happy life, also he must spend some hard times. The life is not smoothly. So what his choice finally? Lets into the text. Language study (part one)Paras1-3First periodSecond period教 学 内 容时间分配及备注1. Cultural Notes. (2 minutes)Countryside: the countryside of Britain is well known for its beauty and many contrasts: its bare mountains and moorland, its lakes, rivers and woods, and its long, often wild coastline. Many people associate the countryside with peace and relaxation. They spend their free time walking or cycling there, or go to the country for a picnic or a pub lunch. While some people dream of living in the country, where they believe they would have a better and healthier lifestyle.1. Ss read the first sentences of Paragraphs 1-3 and sum up the main idea of this part. (3 minutes)2. T explains language points in this part and gives Ss practice (15 minutes)1) get by: be good enough but not very good; manage to live or do things in a satisfactory way e.g.: We can get by with four computers at the moment, but well need a couple more when the new staff members arrive.Phrases: get across get away get back get in get on 2) self-reliant sort of life: a kind of life someone do everything by themselves.3) Our hens keep us in eggs, with several dozen left over to sell each week. We eat eggs laid by our hens and we can also sell several dozen of spare ones every week. 1. T asks Ss to describe what the first paragraph mainly about. Pick up some Ss to answer details of the first paragraph.(13minutes) Such us: 1 What are the two things that the writer has always wanted to do? 2 Why does the writer think that his life in the country is of the self-reliant type and satisfying? 3 what the phrase”get by” mean? Tell me some phrases about “get”. 4 what the phrase “self-reliant” mean?.2. T explains language points in Part II and gives Ss practice.Language Study (part two) (20 minutes)1) .when it was 30 below: here the Celsius scale is used instead of the Fahrenheit scale.2) haul: (1) transport, as with a truck, cart, etc. e.g.: The farmers haul vegetables to the market on a truck every morning. Sometime later Jim and Emily will help me to better the conditions of the outdoor toilet that makes an addition to the indoor plumbing, when we are working outside, which should have been done long before. 4) purse: follow e.g.: After graduation Martin chose to purse the same career as his father as a minister.Phrases: pursue ones study in hot pursuit5) there is no rest for the wicked (old saying) a young idler, an old beggar. All time is no time when it is past. Constant dripping wears away the stone.3 Ss re-read Part II and make a summary of each paragraph in it. T writes down their summaries on the blackboard. Then, based on paragraph summaries, Ss will come up with a summary of Part II. Let someone to do the report in the class.(12 minutes)4 Ss read the first sentences of Paragraphs 8-11 and sum up the main idea of this part. (3 minutes) 5 T explains the language points in this part and gives Ss practice. Language Study (part three) (20 minutes) 1) get through: come successfully to the end e.g.: The local government has taken some measures to ensure that all the people will get through the winter. (2) insurance phrases: insurance policy insurance premium deposit premium retirement pension fixed deposit current/demand deposit (3) policy: take out a policy on ones life policy maker 7) premium: a sum of money that you pay regularly to an insurance company for an insurance policy e.g.: Some people are complaining that car insurance premiums have increased too much this year. 8) dine out: eat a meal away from home (usu. in a restaurant) e.g.: With the improvement of living standards, more people dine out at weekends.9) patronize: go to as a customer e.g.: When he was a student, Sterling often patronized the little restaurant near the school.6 T sum up the main idea of paragraph8-117 T explains language points in Part IV and(1) I suspect not everyone who loves the country would be happy living the way we do. I doubt not all those who love the country life would enjoy the life just in the way we do.(2) Because we are so busy and on such a tight budget, we dont entertain much. Because we are very busy and short of money, so we seldom invite guests to dinner.(3) temptation: the feeling of being tempted to do sth. that you know might be wrong or harmful; e.g.: The kids cant resist the temptation of McDonalds.8 T sum up the main idea of paragraph12-15Post-reading tasks1. 1. 1) Ss work in pairs to finish Text Organization Exercise 2. Later some of them may report to class.2) T guides Ss through Writing Strategy. 3) T urges Ss to use comparison and contrast more effectively in their own writing. In many instances he employs the pattern of “one topic sentence + several detail sentences” structure. Its easy for readers to grasp the main idea, and it is also proven effective for learner writers like our students.Sometimes the detail sentences run parallel to each other, like those in Paragraph 2. In some other paragraphs the detail sentences have their own hierarchy. Like Paragraph. Each sub-topic sentence has its own supporting details. Listen to the tape recorder and T asks Ss the following questions on the recording (10 minutes):- What are the special contributions of Abraham, John and Martin to the Americans?(They all advocated black civil rights.)- How did they die? (They were all assassinated.)2. Knowledge of American geography1) T brings a map of the USA to class, hangs it in the front of the classroom.2) T explains that the USA was divided after the Abolition Act: the Northern States supported it, while the Southern States disapproved of it. 3) T circles out the Southern States (Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia) and the Deep South states (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and Mississippi) on the map. Ss scan the text to find out all place names (Dresden Ontario, Ripley Ohio, Ohio River, Kentucky, North Carolina, New Port Indiana, Maryland, Cincinnati, Buffalo N.Y., Niagara River) and locate them on the map. T may invite Ss to come up to the map and trace the Hensons escape route (i.e., the last section of the text) on it. (10 minutes)3. Knowledge of Christianity1) T explains that, for historical reasons, many black slaves believed in Christianity, like Uncle Tom in Uncle Toms Cabin. This freedom is often expressed in terms of rights to do certain things or to be treated in a particular way. In Britain and the US the most basic rights include freedom of expression, freedom of choice and freedom of worship.
