Humor has been evaluated by many great minds such as Thomas Hobbes, who, in “On Nature”, disliked humor, “Laughter is nothing else but sudden glory arising from sudden thought of feeling far better than others.” He thought humor to be a negative quality of human narrow-mindedness. However, Mordechai Gordon, Ph. D of Education, insists, “Humor allows us to view the world from an angle that is amusing rather than serious.” I agree with Gordon. Learning to look at the world through humor is important. In the United States, every four years an election occurs. Without humor as a way to express their feelings, how else would Americans keep from clawing their eyes out and going the way of lemming? Television shows like “The Daily Show” have become important parts of American culture. They are mothering the masses by metaphorically(隐喻地) airplane-ing politics into our mouths. They make politics fun. Of course, politics is only one type of humor. Social humor helps people through the twists and turns of the human condition. American pop culture promotes an unhealthy self- image. On the topic of self-image, Hari Kondabolu stands out. He has a joke about the popular musical group “The Pussycat Dolls”, describing their hit song “Dont Cha” as a negative representation of women. He points out an obvious offence in American culture. A study from Loyola University of Maryland has shown that humor is one determining factor for selecting a mating partner. Amongst other things, mates look for an outstanding funny bone in a potential partner. Of course, humor is not always used for good purposes. Humor can be linked to vulgarity (粗俗)and racism, but, like everything else, it has potential to unite human beings by allowing us to laugh at ourselves, our failures and our connection with one another. Though 1ife may seem tough and depressing at times, all I have to do is look in the mirror at my increased wrinkles(皱纹) to know that there is a comedy out there that even Chaplin wasnt aware of. With that in mind, remember to laugh with humanity and sometimes at humanity. 56. Hobbes believes that humor_. A. was for people to view the world from another angle B. resulted in narrow-mindedness of human beings C. was only a way to laugh at others to make oneself feel better D. had the power to mirror personal glory and national values57. The fourth paragraph is developed mainly_. A. by comparisonB. by example C. by process D. by classification58. What can we learn from the last two paragraphs? A. The author is determined to face life with a sense of humor. B. The author feels helpless and sad about getting older. C. Never be the one who laughs at other people. D. Chaplin wasnt aware of being laughed at.BInteractive Home security SystemsTarik Celebi who lives in San Francisco suburb, takes his home-security system with him to work to dinner, just about anywhere. By his cell phone, he arms”his home-securityalarm from his car before he leaves for work. During his workday, he gets e-mail alerts every time his front door opens, even though hes miles away. If the door opens at an unusual time-say midday when no one should be coming or going he can order a 30-second video clip (片段)from the camera that watches the door. If its just his mother-in-law getting a package delivery, no worries.Celebi is one of the first users of the latest interactive home-security systems. In addition to sounding alarms when the house is broken into and notifying homeowners or police, as traditional systems do, the interactive systems give users new ways to remotely control their systems and their home environment. Different from traditional home-security alarms, which homeowners typically have to press buttons on a keypad to turn on before they leave their homes, the interactive systems enable consumers to arm and disarm systems from smart phones, iPads and PCs,no matter where they are. Most traditional systems are set up to sound an alarm if doors or windows are opened. The interactive systems give homeowners more options. For example, users can elect, when they want to be notified. They might want an e-mail or a text every time a door is opened, or only during the hours of 3 to 4 p. m. when kids come home from school. Like Celebi, they can add cameras and get video clips when doors open. That could be helpful in making sure kids arent bringing friends home when theyre not supposed to.Nationwide about 20% of homes have traditional home-security systems. About half stop using them because they tire of the trouble. Being able to arm systems even while dashing to the subway or while at work will increase their usage of the new interactive systems. Although the new functions add costs to home security, the interactive systems art believed to push home-security systems usage rates closer to 30%, which would be a big movement for an industry thats been largely stuck at 20% for the past decade. “We all know its going to get bigger though we dont know how long its going to take,” Eric Taylor, an officer from San Francisco Security Department says.59.What may Ceiebi first do if his front door opens at a wrong time when he is away?A. The main goal of technology companies is to get people to spend more money and time on their products, not to actually improve our quality of life. They have successfully created a cultural disease.Consumers willingly give up their freedom, money and time to catch up on the latest information, to keep pace with their peers or to appear modern.I see people trapped in a pathological(病态的)relationship with time-sucking technology, where they serve technology more than technology serves them.I call this technology servitude.I am referring to a loss of personal freedom and independence because of uncontrolled consumption of many kinds of devices that eat up time and money. What is a healthy use of technology devices? That is the vital question.Who is really in charge of my life? That is what people need to ask themselves if we are to have any chance of breaking up false beliefs about their use of technology. When we can live happily without using so much technology for a day or a week, then we can regain control and personal freedom, become the master of technology and discover what there is to enjoy in life free of technology.Mae West is famous for proclaiming the wisdom that “too much of a good thing is wonderful.” But its time to discover that it does not work for technology.Richard Fernandez, an executive coach at Google acknowledged that “we can be swept away by our technologies.” To break the grand digital connection people must consider how life long ago could be fantastic without todays overused technology.63. The underlined word “allure” in Paragraph 2 probably means _.A. advantage B. attraction C.adaptation D. attempt64. It can be inferred from this passage that people _.A. consider too much technology wonderfulB. have realized the harm of high-tech devicesC. can regain freedom without high-tech devices D. may enjoy life better without overused technology65. From the passage, technology companies aim to _.A. attract people to buy their products B. provide the latest informationC. improve peoples quality of life D. deal with cultural diseases66. Whats the authors attitude towards the overusing of high-tech devices?A. Neutral. B. Skeptical(怀疑的). C. Disapproving. D. Sympathetic. DThink of the last time a song really moved you, or meant something to youListening to and playing music affects marry different sections of the brain, affecting us physically as well. Why are we as humans so connected to music? Making music is something that we are born with. Theres a reason we refer to music as the “universal language”;there has been no known human culture without music. Dancing and music came before agriculture, and possibly even before languageThe fact that whale music and human music have so much in common suggests that music may exist before humans and that we may be latecomers to the musical scene rather than being the inventors of musicWe begin life being affected by music; babies first begin to respond to music even before their birth. Whether or not its true, everyone has heard that playing classical music; for your baby supposedly helps him or her become smarter. A study done in the United Kingdom concluded that children were able to recognize and even preferred music that they had heard lip to three months before birth. Although it made no difference whether
