Outside the window, it was a world of white. The buildings, construction sites and towering cranes were all covered with white. The weather forecast had said there would be a light snow, but the sky was pouring out an endless stream of white. The snow season has not yet arrived, but Beijing has already had its first snow of the year, so far the heaviest in years.I slipped into my warm snow boots with the spiked soles, put on my woolen ski hat and the carmine down jacket that Little Pillar from Big Middle Village of Baodi county had given me when he became manager of the garment factory, and then asked leave of my family. Like a child whod never miss a frolic in the snow, I couldnt let slip this godsend. Did I hear you say that its too much for a lady in her seventies? Well, the snow had drawn out the child in me.Where to go? The further the better. I decided to visit the Botanical Garden under the Academy of Sciences. I would take the No. 360 and get off right before the Fragrant Hills stop, which is where the garden is located. I made a call to horticulturist Shi Shuxun whom I had scheduled to interview. “The Botanical Garden will stay closed from November 15 to March 15,” he said. “Besides, the snow is so heavy, can you find my house?” “Ill start out from the West District on the dot of 2:00 pm. If I dont arrive within an hour and a half, I would probably be sitting in meditation in the Sleeping Buddha Monastery. Ive no serious business, I just want to know what does a horticulturist do on such a snowy day.”I had to change two buses to get to the No. 360 bus terminal. The steps of my building were slippery, though sprinkled with salt. I had a fall and was helped down the flight by the lift operator. “You wont be able to squeeze into the bus at this hour. Better take a miandi,” she advised me, meaning the mini-taxi. Okay, I would have to make do with a miandi. Reluctantly, I gave up on the pleasures of the age, the pleasure of pressing together in a packed bus with other Beijingers.I hailed a taxi at the entrance of our building. There was already a pretty girl inside and a middle-aged man, who kindly opened the door for me. Taxis were rare on snowy days, and its customary for taxi drivers to take more than one fare at a same time. I didnt think much of it.As the taxi drove out of the alley, I told the driver I was going to the Botanical Garden. The middle-aged man said to me, “Well take you to the No. 360 bus stop at the Zoo. Forget about taking a taxi. It would be a miracle if they dont charge you 400 yuan on a day like this. A lady like you is just the kind of person they would overcharge.” “Why me?” “I can tell by your outfit that youre out to enjoy the snow.” “Okay,” I said, “name your price, and if I cant pay, Ill leave this jacket with you.”“What are you talking about,” he protested laughingly, “we are managers of the miandi taxi. If we tell you that the miandi taxi will not be able to make it to the Fragrant Hills, its more likely than not that it wouldnt. And no miandi will take you, since there wouldnt be any return fare. Its much safer to take the No. 360 bus from the Zoo and get off at the Botanical Garden. Im your neighbor.” What he said made sense.From the Zoo to the Botanical Gardens on the No. 360 bus, thats a far cry from traveling 360 degrees around the globe. Whats the big deal, Ill have a go at it. The fare was only 0.70 yuan. I felt I had made a profit of 3999.30 yuan-400 yuan minus 0.70 yuan. Nowadays, prices for everything are going up, except bus fares and stamps. Knock on wood.And can you imagine, someone gave up his seat for me, on a long-distance bus! It was a middle-aged man who had greeted me first: “As you approached from afar, I was reminded of the screen image of an explorer in the desert sands,” he told me. He also gave me some advice: “When you return, better go to the Fragrant Hills bus terminal. Its the first stop. Therell be vacant seats. You wont be able to stand the rocking and swaying if you get on midway and have to stand. Its more than an hour.”On our way, we could see people tumbling off their bikes in the snow. The masses of bicycles stranded outside the city gates looked like flocks of woolly lambs. Our bus swerved to make way for a truck, and got stuck in the snow. It groaned and refused to budge. The bus driver asked us all to alight as he tried to start it up again. Finally as the bus heaved and started moving, we ran after it and scrambled aboard. For me it was like an acrobatic stunt. But I made it, and was proud of my feat!Dusk arrived early in the heavy snow. After my interview with Shi Shuxun and a hearty meal of Yunnan sweet rice dumplings made by his wife, I came out into the darkness of the night and the whiteness of the snow and found the bus stop quite deserted. There was no need to go to the No. 360 starting point at the Fragrant Hills. I would risk being deserted in the snow-covered hills if the bus was called off on account of the weather. I felt so elated.
