文档简介

The feelings on THE LOTTERYIt is a short story that talks about an ancient village. I do not know how long the village exists. But I am sure one thing that the village has changed a lot except lottery. In our modern society, lottery stands for a great treasure. But sometimes may not, perhaps a punishment even about your life. Surely, author uses lottery to express his own opinions on society and human. Lottery has existed a long time even becomes a tradition in the village. I t is right. But the most important point is who gets the lottery will be stoned to death. In my opinion, the authors attention is to criticize humans cruelty and indifference. Another point is about custom and tradition. Besides the two ideas, its thinking and accused that I want to mention. Then, Ill discuss the next three ideas. First, its humans cruelty and indifference. Author sets the story in a seemingly civilized and peaceful story. You can clearly see it at the beginning of the story. “The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full summer day; the flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green. “ Everything looks good. And everyone also does not pay more attention to this day. They just know its a tradition for them. In the story, we will find that the people of the village began to gather in the square. But as we know, the people who get the lottery will be stoned to death. To our astonishment, nobody wants to stand as individuals and oppose the lottery. However, there is a person of them will be stoned by family, friends, neighborhoods and villagers. They use this way to punish the person who doesnt anything wrong. When Tessie Hutchinson questions the method of drawing , her husband just says “Shut up , Tessie” And he also forces the slip of paper with the black spot on it out of her hand and holds it up in front of crowd. More sadly, the member of their village, no one is buried in grief after she died. In someones minds, they believe that god leads them to do it, someone must be punished instead of them. So everyone accepts the results of the lottery without any question. Second, its about custom and tradition. The people of the village continue to take part in the lottery even though they cannot remember certain aspects of the ritual , such as the “tuneless chant” and the “ritual salute”, simply because the event has been held for so long that these aspects have been lost to time. But even so, stone someone will even change in their village. While some other villages have already quitted the lottery. So, their thought imprisoned by the old tradition firmly. For example, old man Warmer, the oldest man in the village, who has participated in the lottery seventy-seven times. When Mr. Adams and Mrs. Adams suggest to Warmer that some other villages have already given up the lottery , he replies with ,”Next thing you know, theyll be wanting to go back to living in cavesTheres always been a lottery.” He stands for the storys themes, who is so stubborn,. Whats more, Joe Summers is said to symbolize the evils of capitalism and social stratifications. Mrs. Graves and Mr. Graves also represent tradition and the status quo. Third, its about thinking and accused. Different with the most of villages, they are the third kind of people. Mr. Adams and Mrs. Adams is thinking about giving up the ritual, tells old man Warmer the changing in some other villages. Its a big difference. In the end , Tessie Hutchinson who “wins” the lottery and is stoned to death by her villages. Although she doesnt change her ending, she shouted to all people . “It isnt fair , it isnt right.” By challenge the results of the lottery , Tessie Hutchinson represents one of the few voices of disagreement in a village controlled by tradition and complacency. I think lexical means in Shirley Jacksons story uses so good. Simple but right words to describe backgrou
