23:33:32 2020/1/111.Many People, Many Tastes1People are different. What one likes may not be favored by another person. Take our eating habits for example, different people have different tastes. Some people are very fond of beef while others enjoy eating fish or sea foods. Indeed, one mans meat is another mans poison2. Take Joe for instance, he is very much interested in beef. But to his wife , beef doesnt agree with her .She even hate the smell of beef. However, his wife does not object Joes eating beef, because she knows that Many men, many tastes. However, there are many guys who would measure other people by their own bushel3. They think other people should do the same thing as they do, They dont know that habit is second nature4. In most cases, these people find no popularity and they certainly cant get on with other people.注释:1.Many people, many tastes 人各有所好 2.One mans meat is another mans poison 甲所喜欢的乙不一定也喜欢 3.Measure other people by ones own bushel 以己度人 4.Habit is second nature 习惯是人的第二天性2.The Grass Is Always Greener on the Other HillNowadays many people are worried stiff 1 about their lives. Nobody seems to be able to avoid worries. Take those who are working on a good job 2 for instance. Before they started working, they thought that they would be in the seventh heaven 3 to get a job. But once they get a job and started working on it, they may become fed up with 4 the job. They may even think of jumping ship 5 and finding another job. Of course, the grass is always greener on the other hill 6. Nobody will be satisfied with working on the same job 7 all his life. What about those who are already rolling in money 8? Are they feel happy? if you ask some of these people, they may tell you that they are still aiming at 9 something else. Indeed, we treasure little what we have and crave 10 what we havent. This is human nature. People that are living from hand to mouth 11 will be happy if they have sufficient food to eat. But, when they got the food, they will begin to think of something else. Look at those who are as rich as a king 12 and those that are as poor as churchs mouse 13 and you may then realize that nobody is totally satisfied. Are you one of these people? If you are, I advise you to think about this: satisfaction is the secret of life 14!注释:1.be worried stiff 烦的要命 2.work on a good job 有个好工作干 3.be in the seventh heaven 十分高兴 4.be fed up with 厌倦 5.jump ship 跳槽,改变职业 6.The grass is always greener on the other hill 这山望着那山高 7.work on the same job 从不改变工作 8.roll in money 在钱里打滚,形容很有钱 9.aim at 目标是 10.crave 渴望得到 11.live from hand to mouth 饥寒交迫,吃了上顿没下顿 12.as rich as a king 非常阔 13.as poor as a churchs mouse 一贫如洗 14.the secret of life 生活秘诀3.Do You Need Fine-Weather Friends?Have you got friends? What kind of friends do you have? Do you have friends who will take their shirts off their back 1 when you are in trouble 2? Or do you have friends who will only share your happiness? When you sit down and think about these questions, you may be disappointed 3 that most of your friends are fine-weather friends 4, whom you cant depend on 5 for genuine assistance.Of course, we all need friends. Friends, by the way, are supposed to 6 be those who share weal and woe 7, who will back you up 8 when you need their support and who will cheer you up 9 when you are down. Our life is full of ups and downs 10. This is the way of life .When we are on the gravy train 11 and enjoy the excitement of our success, we like to share the happiness with out friends. But when we are down 12, having a hard time of life, we also need them to cheer us up. Unfortunately, many of our friends fail to do 13 so. When your business is going to the dogs 14, for instance, you may find that some of your friends begin to withdraw from you, leaving you broken-hearted 15. Some of your friends may become green with envy 16 at your success or even hit you below the belt 17. Sad? Well, you dont have to take them too much to heart 18. Wit once bought is worth twice taught. 19 Chalk it up to experience 20, and keep them at arms length 21. They get a great kick out of5 singing and dancing, They have a lot of pleasure in6 teasing cats and dogs and making fun of7 their peers. But the things teenage girls all seem to be hooked on8 are make-ups and pretty clothes.Indeed, teenage girls are so hooked on make-ups and beautiful clothes that they would like to spend most of their pocket money on9 them. If you go to a shop and take a look at10 the cosmetics counter, you will find that people crowding around the counter11 and biting their lips at12 the displayed objects are teenage girls. You seldom see a man or an old woman standing there. If you do see an old woman or a man, you bet13 their daughters are there. The mother, for instance , is prone to4 taking side with5 the youngest son. The father however, has the inclination of6 taking the youngest daughter under his wings7. But if there is only one daughter and one son in the family, the father and the mother will be most likely8 to form into two teams , with the father on his daughters side9 and the mother on her sons side. But, if there are three daughters only, the youngest is usually the one that receives much of her parents preference. And this phenomenon can be best shown in10 Johns family, where there are three daughters, Ann, Sue and Jane.Ann is fourteen. She is quite reserved11, but sensible12, saying few things in the house but helping her Mum a lot. But in the eyes of13 her mother , she is a helper . All Right. But she tends to take her help and sensibility for granted14. Sue is two years younger than Ann. She is bad-tempered15, flying into a rage16 at the drop of a hat17, often for no reason at all18. Jane is eight, she is the apple of her parents eye19. Her needs are taken good care of. and all her desires are satisfied . Both her mother and father think she is the life and joy of the family. She gets much more preference than her two sisters, the fact of which, of course, has put them on bad terms20 and often makes them hate each others guts21.注释:1.on fair play 没有公平可言 2.tend to 往往会 3.give ones preference to 偏爱 4.be prone to 很容易会 5.take side with 站在的一边,袒护 6.have the inclination of 有的倾向 7.take someone under ones wings 庇护 8.be most like to 很可能会 9.on someones side 在某人的一边 10.can be best show in 在中得到最好的体现 11.be reserved 内向的 不爱言语的 12.Sensible 通情达理的,懂事理的 13.in the eyes of 在的眼睛里,在看来 14.takefor granted 不把当回事;将视为理所当然 15.be bad-tempered 脾气很不好的 16.fly into a range 大发雷霆,暴怒 17.at the drop of a hat 动不动就会 18.for no reason at all 没有任何理由的 19.the apple of someones eye 某人的掌上明珠 20.be on had terms 关系很不好 21. hate someones guts 对某人恨之入骨6.Digging DirtNO matter where you go, you may always run into1 people who like to poke their noses into2 the affairs of other people or into gossipers who are too fond of talking about other peoples dirty linen3. If, for instance, you have some visitors coming for dinner in your place, one of your neighbors may peep through4 the fence into your courtyard or and spy on5 what is going on inside of it. If you have one or two luxury limousines6 parking outside your house, your neighbors will whisper to each other , trying to make a guess who the visitors are .If someone is arrested by police , his neighbors will hurriedly gather in groups, trying to dig dirt7 on his past and predicating a sort of punishment he may get. And if a lady goes out with another man or man goes out with another lady, their neighbors will quickly pass the news around8, eager to let everyone know what is happening .And if you have made your career a big hit9 and got promoted10, your neighbors will fondly ask you how much you will get for the new position . So much so that they either dedicate much of their time to fishing out information about11 you or try to invade into your privacy12 and spread the news on whatever they know about you and your family members. They are indeed a perfect nuisance. And if you become affected by what they do or take it too much to heart13, you may be after their fancy14, for they are fond of making you troubled. Dick is two years older than Don. He has had university education and a master degree in8 public relations. Don became a drop-out9 form high school. He received no college education and now he is working as10 a truck driver for a company. Because of their different personality and attitudes, they lead two different kinds of lives.Dick, working as the manger of the PR Section11, has a handsome monthly salary about12 4000 dollars. He has a large circle of13 friends and a very well-knitted relation net14. He s busy helping15 promote the companys business and hes often praised for being a very capable man. He is not only spoken highly by his boss, but also praised to the skies16 by his colleagues and subordinates. He is modest and prudent, though hes extremely intelligent and artful17. He has a mind like a steel trap18, picking up new things more quickly than most people can imagine. Hes adaptable and flexible19, always able to adjust to circumstances. Because of this, he is able to20 make his wife sit pretty21 and the whole family enjoy a better life than most other families. His younger brother Don, however, is almost living from hand to mouth22, though he goes mooning23. But tolling and moiling24 do not help him. He lacks what Dick is equipped with25. Lets take Ann as an example. At the age of five, when she was still in the kindergarten, she was very envious of her peers whose parents came to pick them up6 in a car better than her parents. She didnt know why they had a better car and she was dreaming of7 being picked u
