Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Mark your answer by blackening the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage OneQuestions 21 to 25 are based on the following passageTelevision - that most widespread and persuasive of modern technologies, marked by rapid change and growth - is moving into a new era, an era of extraordinary sophistication and diversity (the quality of being diverse), which promises to reshape our lives and our world. It is an electronic revolution, made possible by the marriage of television and computer technologies. The word “television”, derived from its Greek (tele: distant) and Latin (visio: sight) roots, can literally be interpreted as sight from a distance. Very simply put, it works in this way: through a sophisticated system of electronics, television provides the capability of converting an image (focused on a special photoconductive plate within a camera) into electronic impulses, which can be sent through a wire or cable. These impulses, when fed into a receiver (television set), can then be electronically reorganized into that same image. Television is more than just an electronics system, however. It is a means of expression, as well as a vehicle for communication, and as such becomes a powerful tool for reaching other human beings. The field of television can be divided into two categories determined by its means of transmission. First, there is broadcast television, which reaches the masses through airwave transmission of television signals. Second, there is non-broadcast television, which provides for the needs of individuals or specific interest groups through controlled transmission techniques. Traditionally, television has been a medium of the masses. We are most familiar with broadcast television because it has been with us for about thirty-seven years in a form similar to that exists today. During those years, it has been controlled, for the most part, by the broadcast networks, ABC, NBC, and CBS, who have been the major providers of news, information, and entertainment. These giants of broadcasting have actually shaped not only television but our perception of it as well. We have come to look upon the picture tube as a source of entertainment, placing our role in this dynamic medium as the passive viewer.21. What seems to be the best title for the passage?A) A Powerful Tool of Entertainment.B) The Means of Transmission of TV.C) TV: Its Working Principles and Functions.D) A Brief Introduction to the Development of TV.22. The rapid change and growth of TV is due to the contributions of _.A) computer technologiesB) a new means of transmissionC) a powerful vehicle of communicationD) TV giants like ABC, NBC and CBS23. What is the use of the second means of transmission?A) To meet the requirements of people especially interested in non-broadcast program.B) To meet the requirements of certain groups of people.C) To meet the requirements of people with a special interest in cable TV.D) To meet the requirements of people interested in controlled transmission techniques.24. The italicized “very simply put” in Para. 2 means “_”.A) when it is simply put downB) when it is put to simple tasksC) if it is put to simple tasksD) if it is expressed in a simple way25. What is NOT the reason for TV to be powerful?A) It highlights broadcasting giants.B) It can communicate to human beings.C) It provides recreational programs.D) It provides news programs.Passage TwoQuestions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage:There is no denying that students should learn something about how computers work, just as we expect them at least to understand that the internal combustion engine (内燃机) has something to do with burning fuel, expanding gases and pistons (活塞) being driven, for people should have some basic idea of how the things that they use do what they do. Further, students might be helped by a course that considers the computers impact on society. But that is not what is meant by computer literacy. For computer literacy is not a form of literacy (读写能力); it is a trade skill that should not be taught as a liberal art. Learning how to use a computer and learning how to program one are two distinct activities. A case might be made that the competent citizens of tomorrow should free themselves from their fear of computers. But this is quite different from saying that all ought to know how to program one. Leave that to people who have chosen programming as a career. While programming can be lots of fun, and while our society needs some people who are experts at it, the same is true of auto repair and violin making. Learning how to use a computer is not that difficult, and it gets easier all the time as programs become more “user-friendly”. Let us assume that in the future everyone is going to have to know how to use a computer to be a competent citizen. What does the phrase “learning to use a computer” mean? It sounds like “learning to drive a car”, that is, it sounds as if there is some set of definite skills that, once acquired, enable one to use a computer. In fact, “learning to use a computer” is much more like “learning to play a game”, but learning the rules of one game may not help you play a second game, whose rules may not be the same. There is no such a thing as teaching someone how to use a computer. One can only teach people to use this or that program and generally that is easily accomplished.26. To be the competent citizens of tomorrow, people should _.A) try to lay a solid foundation in computer scienceB) be aware of how the things that they use do what they doC) learn to use a computer by acquiring a certain set of skillsD) understand that programming a computer is more essential than repairing a car27. In the second paragraph “violin making” is mentioned to show that _.A) programming a computer is as interesting as making a violinB) our society needs experts in different fieldsC) violin making requires as much skill as computer programmingD) people who can use a computer dont necessarily have to know computer programming28. Learning to use a computer is getting easier all the time because _.A) programs are becoming less complicatedB) programs are designed to be convenient to usersC) programming is becoming easier and easierD) programs are becoming readily available to computer users29. According to the author, the phrase “learning to use a computer” (Sentence 3, Paragraph 3) means learning _.A) a set of rulesB) the fundamentals of computer scienceC) specific programsD) general principles of programming30. The authors purpose in writing this passage is _.A) to stress the impact of the computer on societyB) to explain the concept of computer literacyC) to illustrate the requirements for being competent citizens of tomorrowD) to emphasize that computer programming is an interesting and challenging jobPassage ThreeQuestions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage:Professor Smith recently persuaded 35 people, 23 of them women, to keep a diary of all their absent-minded actions for a fortnight. When he came to analyze their embarrassing lapses (差错) in a scientific report, he was surprised to find that nearly all of them fell into a few groupings. Nor did the lapses appear to be entirely random (随机的). One of the women, for instance, on leaving her house for work one morning threw her dog her earrings and tried to fix a dog biscuit on her ear. “The explanation for this is that the brain is like a computer,” explains the professor. “People programme themselves to do certain activities regularly. It was the womans custom every morning to throw her dog two biscuits and then put on her earrings. But somehow the action got reversed in the programme.” About one in twenty of the incidents the volunteers reported were these “programme assembly failures”. Altogether the volunteers logged 433 unintentional actions that they found themselves doing - an average of twelve each. There appear to be peak periods in the day when we are at our zaniest (荒谬可笑的). These are two hours some time between eight a.m. and noon, between four and six p.m. with a smaller peak between eight and ten p.m. “Among men the peak seems to be when a changeover in brain programmes occurs, as for instance between going to and from work.” Women on average reported slightly more lapses - 12.5 compared with 10.9 for men probably because they were more reliable reporters. A startling finding of the research is that the absent-minded activity is a hazard of doing things in which we are skilled. Normally, you would expect that skill reduces the number of errors we make. But trying to avoid silly slips by concentrating more could make things a lot worse - even dangerous.31. In his study Professor Smith asked the subjects _.A) to keep track of people who tend to forget thingsB) to report their embarrassing lapses at randomC) to analyze their awkward experiences scientificallyD) to keep a record of what they did unintentionally32. Professor Smith discovered that _.A) certain patterns can be identified in the recorded incidentsB) many people were too embarrassed to admit their absent-mindednessC) men tend to be more absent-minded than womenD) absent-mindedness is an excusable human weakness33. “Programme assembly failures” (Sentence 6, Paragraph 2) refers to the phenomenon that people _.A) often fail to programme their routines beforehandB) tend to make mistakes when they are in a hurryC) unconsciously change the sequence of doing thingsD) are likely to mess things up if they are too tired34. We learn from the third paragraph that _.A) absent-mindedness tends to occur during certain hours of the dayB) women are very careful to perform actions during peak periodsC) women experience more peak periods of absent-mindednessD) mens absent-mindedness often results in funny situations35. It can be concluded from the passage that _.A) people should avoid doing important things during peak periods of lapsesB) hazards can be avoided when people do things they are good atC) people should be careful when programming their actionsD) lapses cannot always be attributed to lack of concentrationPassage FourQuestions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage:In department stores and closets all over the world, they are waiting. Their outward appearance seems rather appealing because they come in a variety of styles, textures, and colors. But they are ultimately the biggest deception that exists in the fashion industry today. What are they? They are high heelsa womans enemy (whether she knows it or not). High heel shoes are the downfall of modern society. Fashion myths have led women to believe that they are more beautiful or sophisticated for wearing heels, but in reality, heels succeed in posing short- as well as long-term hardships. Women should fight the high-heel industry by refusing to wear or purchase high heel shoes in order to save the world from unnecessary physical and psychologicalsuffering. From the sake of fairness, it must be noted that there is a positive side to high heels. First, heels are excellent for aerating(使通气)lawns. Anyone who has ever worn heels on grass knows what I am talking about. A simple trip around the yard in a pair of those babies eliminates all need to call for a lawn-care specialist, and provides the perfect-sized holes to give any lawn oxygen without all those messy chunks of dirt lying around. Second, heels are quite functional for defense against oncoming enemies, who can easily be scared away by threatening them with a pair of these sharp, deadly fashion accessories. Regardless of such practical uses for heels, the fact remains that wearing high heels is harmful to ones physical health. Talk to any podiatrist, and you will hear that the majority of their business comes from high-heel-wearing women. High heels are known to cause problems such as deformed feet and torn toenails. The risk of severe back problems and twisted or broken ankles is three times higher for a flat shoe-wearer. Wearing heels also creates the threat of getting a heel caught in a sidewalk crack or a sewer-grate(阴沟栅)and being thrown to the groundpossibly breaking a nose, back, or neck. And of course, after wearing heels for a day, any woman knows she can look forward to a night of pain as she tries to comfort her swollen, aching feet. 36. What makes women blind to the deceptive nature of high heels? A) The multi-functional use of high heels. B) Their attempt to show off their status. C) The rich variety of high heel styles. D) Their wish to improve their appearance.37. The authors presentation of the positive side of high heels is meant to. A) be ironic B) poke fun at women C) be fair to the fashion industry D) make his point convincing38. The author uses the expression “those babies” (Line 3, Para. 3) to refer to high heels to. A) show their fragile characteristics B) indicate their feminine features C) show womens affection for them D) emphasize their small size39. The authors chief argument against high heels is that they. A) pose a threat to lawns B) are injurious to womens health C) dont necessarily make women beautifulD) are ineffective as a weapon of defense40. It can be inferred from the passage that women should. A) see through the very nature of fashion myths B) boycott the products of the fashion industry C) go to a podiatrist regularly for advice D) avoid following fashion too closelyPart III Grammar and Vocabulary (15 points, 20 minutes)Directions: In this section, there are 30 incomplete sentences.
