初三英语时文阅读(2009.5.4)(材料一)喜欢听什么音乐可不仅关乎品味,还关乎智商! Music vs. IQ (精读课文) Is music enjoyed simply for being a nice little tune? No, there are things far more important than whether you actually like the song. For one thing, you must consider whether the band or artist you are listening to is currently fashionable. After all, you wouldnt want to look out of touch. Whats more, you need to make sure your favourite music doesnt mark you out as “dumb.” A recent survey shows some interesting relationships between music and IQ. Want to know what your music says about your intelligence? Heres a list.Super intelligent Beethoven The German composer comes top of the list. Classical music is often associated with intelligence.Quite intelligent U2 The Irish rock band is the choice for people of moderate intelligence, who enjoy politically charged songs like Sunday Bloody Sunday.Average Coldplay (酷玩乐队) The indie band is for those not looking for anything out of the ordinary.A little dumb Kayne West Never top of the class at school? This Chicago rapper should be right up your street.Very dumb Lil Wayne The US rapper comes bottom of the survey for intelligence, but still sells millions of records around the world. How come? This is the website for more details: http:/musicthatmakesyou dumb.virgil.gr/. The results have already stirred much debate. Of course, to describe someones music taste as dumb is to insult them. Anyway, dont take this survey too seriously. Enjoy any music you like!(材料二)上任至今,美国总统巴拉克奥巴马“改变”了什么呢? Obama Uses Soft Diplomacy to Win over World US President Barack Obama was talking about “change” in his presidential campaign. Now the world does find that there are already changes in many aspects of the US foreign policy.Listening to the world So what has Obama done? He has decided to withdraw all US troops from Iraq by August 2010. He has chosen a optimistic and diplomatic man as a special envoy to the Middle East (中东). He has said in a firm tone that “the United States is not, and will never be, at war with Islam.”. The presidents soft diplomacy approach has attraced much praise, and several policies are viewed as significant steps by the new US government. During the London G20 summit (二十国集团伦敦金融峰会), Obama said, “I came here to put forward our ideas. But I also came here to listen and not to lecture.”Seeking a new beginning Recently, when Obama attended the 5th Summit of the Americas (第五届美洲峰会), he continued to use soft diplomacy to win back Latin American countries who were not pleased with their powerful neighbour. Even with Venezuelan President Chavez (委内瑞拉总统查韦斯), a harsh critic of US policies, Obama had a friendly encounter. The two presidents shook hands, exchanged greetings with smiles, and pats on the back. During the summit, Obama expressed his willingness to rebuild relations with Cuba, the only country excluded from the summit.“I am prepared to talk with the Cuban government on a wide range of issues.” (材料三)怎么才能从不知道不知道,到不知道知道,到知道不知道,到知道知道的境界呢? When You Know You Know . You Know! How can you be sure that you know what you know? That may sound silly but its really a serious question. Have you ever “thought” you knew something but when it came time to write the exam you discovered that you really didnt “know” it, after all? Strategies you can use When that happens, it isnt because you have a bad memory, its because the things you are trying to remember havent been properly learned. Luckily, there are strategies you can use to help you learn difficult things. And scientists say that there is even a part of your brain that can “predict” whether this new knowledge has been completely understood.Judgment of learning Scientists call this predicting, the “judgment of learning.” It really just means looking over your own shoulder while you are studying and asking yourself, “Do I really get this?” And if you dont, it means adjusting your “strategy” until you do.Heres one strategy:1. Set a short-term goal to learn something.2. Study as you normally would.3. Answer some test questions to get some feedback.4. Use that feedback to work on your weak points. In the drivers seat Developing the ability to “judge” your own learning needs a lot of practice. But it can be a very useful skill. It puts you in the drivers seat and in charge of your own studies. In effect, it lets you know that you really know what you think you know. You know? (材料四)听音乐也能提高耐力? (精读课文)Music and enduranceWhen you enter a gym, you will find many people are listening to music while running. They think that music makes exercise more enjoyable. However, they might not know that selected music does improve the exercise result. A recent study shows that listening to music while you exercise could increase your endurance by up to 15%. The music should be selected according to certain principles. In the study, thirty participants listened to a selection of music. And they should exercise in time with the beat. It is probable that music stimulates a special area of the brain. Then it helps people feel relaxed. According to the study, the type of music depends on factors like the intensity of the exercise, age and gender of people. Different types of music works on different people. Why not find out what type of music can work for you?
