Nuclear powers danger to health, safety, and even life itself can be summed up in one word: radiation. Nuclear radiation has a certain mystery about it, partly because it cannot be detected by human senses. It cant be seen or heard, or touched or tasted, even though it may be all around us. There are other things like that. For example, radio waves are all around us but we cant detect them, sense them, without a radio receiver. Similarly, we cant sense radioactivity without a radiation detector. But unlike common radio waves, nuclear radiation is not harmless to human beings and other living things. At very high levels, radiation can kill an animal or human being outright by killing masses of cells in vital organs. But even the lowest level of radiation can do serious damage. There is no level of radiation that is completely safe. If the radiation does not hit anything important, the damage may not be significant. This is the case when only a few cells are hit, and if they are killed outright. Your body will replace the dead cells with healthy ones. But if the few cells are only damaged, and if they reproduce themselves, you may be in trouble. They reproduce themselves in a deformed way. They can grow into cancer. Sometimes this does not show up for many years. This is another reason for some of the mystery about nuclear radiation. Serious damage can be done without the victim being aware at the time that damage has occurred. A person can be irradiated and feel fine, then die of cancer five, ten, or twenty years later as a result. Or a child can be born weak or liable to serious illness as result of radiation absorbed by its grandparents. Radiation can hurt us. We must know the truth. 1). According to the author, the danger of nuclear power lies in _. A. nuclear mystery B. radiation detection C. nuclear radiation D. radiation level 满分:4 分 2). Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage? A. Radiation can cause serious consequences at high levels. B. Radiation may not cause serious problems when only a few cells are hit and if they are killed outright. C. Radiation can cause serious consequences when a few cells are damaged and they reproduce themselves. D. Radiation can be safe at the lowest level. 满分:4 分 3). The word “significant” in paragraph 3 has the similar meaning with _. A. fatal B. meaningful C. harmful D. remarkable 满分:4 分 4). Radiation can hurt us in that it can _. A. affect the healthy growth of our offspring B. damage cells which may grow into cancer years later C. kill large numbers of cells in main organs so as to cause death immediately D. all of the above 满分:4 分 5). What is the authors main purpose in writing this passage? A. Emphasizing the importance of protection from radiation. B. Solving the mystery about radiation. C. Discussing the cause of cancer. D. Introducing the nuclear power. 满分:4 分 2. Nonverbal (非语言的) communication has to do with gestures, movements and closeness of two people when they are talking. The scientists say that those gestures, movements and so on have meaning which words do not carry. For example, the body distance between two speakers can be important. North Americans often complain that South Americans are unfriendly because they tend to stand close to the North American when speaking, while the South American often considers the North American to be cold or distant because he keeps a greater distance between himself and the person he is speaking to. The eye contact provides another example of what we are calling nonverbal communication. Scientists have observed that there is more eye contact between people who like each other than there is between people who dont like each other. The length of time that the person whom you are speaking to looks at your eyes indicates the amount of interest he has in the things you are talking about. On the other hand, too long a gaze can make people uncomfortable. The eyes apparently play a great part in nonverbal communication. Genuine warmth or interest, shyness or confidence can often be seen in the eyes. We do not always consider a smile to be a sign of friendliness. Someone who is always smiling, and with little apparent reasons, often makes us uneasy. 1). According to the passage, nonverbal communication_. A. can be used to talk with people who cannot bear B. is less used than words C. is a method often used by people who cannot speak D. can tell something that words cannot 满分:4 分 2). The South American_. Which of the following is NOT true? A. There is more eye contact between people who like each other. B. Shorter eye contact shows more interest in what one is talking about. C. Less eye contact suggests distance in relation. D. The longer one looks at you, the more interest he has in you. 满分:4 分 4). Too long a gaze_. A. indicates ones interest in the talk B. tells you how friendly one is C. may upset people being looked at D. shows ones great confidence 满分:4 分 5). Constant smiling without apparent reason_. A. makes people feel happy B. makes people feel uncomfortable C. is a sign of ones friendliness D. is a sign of ones unfriendliness 满分:4 分 3. There are two factors which determine an individuals intelligence. The first is the sort of brain he is born with. Human brains differ considerably, some being more capable than others. But no matter how good a brain he has to begin with, an individual will have a low order of intelligence unless he has opportunities to learn. So the second factor is what happens to the individualthe sort of environment in which he is reared if an individual is handicapped environmentally, it is likely that his brain will fail to develop and he will never attain the level of intelligence of which he is capable. The importance of environment in determining an individuals intelligence can be demonstrated by the case history of the identical twins, Peter and Mark X. Being identical, the twins had identical brains at birth, and their growth processes were the same. When the twins were three months old, their parents died, and they were placed in separate foster homes. Peter was created by parents of low intelligence in an isolated community with poor educational opportunities. Mark was reared in the home of well-to-do parents who had been to college. He was read to as a child, sent to good schools, and given every opportunity to be stimulated intellectually. This environmental difference continued until the twins were in their late teens, when they were given tests to measure their intelligence. Marks I.Q. was 125, twenty-five points higher than the average and fully forty points higher than his identical brother. Given equal opportunities, the twins, having identical brains, would have tested at roughly the same level.1). This selection can best be titled_ A. Measuring Your Intellig
