Teaching PlanAnalysis of the textbook: Look Ahead Book Iis used in Grade Eight in foreign languages schools. The content of the book is interesting, varied, and relevant to students lives, aiming at helping the learners develop the knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, functional language and communicative skills at the same time. The vocabulary is very large in this textbook, so its difficult for the students to use the vocabulary correctly. Analysis of the students: The twenty-four students in my class are always active. They enjoy sharing their opinions with their classmates and teacher in English. Since they are eager to express their ideas in English, teacher should explain the complex grammar in simple language and design different kinds of activities to make sure that every student can make full use of what they have learned in class.Teaching aims:1. Knowledge objectives:A. The formation of the comparative degrees of adjectives B. Comparative construction: A + be +the comparative degrees of adjectives + than + B.2. Skill objectives:A. To help the students to discover and summarize the formation rules of the comparative degrees of adjectives.B. Enable the students to communicate freely in their daily life by using comparative construction.3. Emotion objectivesA. To help the students get on well with each other, communicate well with each other and help each other through collaborative learning.B. To lead the students to set up the concept of appreciation of the beauty in our life and let them know the importance of protecting our environment.Key points:1. To master the comparative degree forms of different adjectives 2. To use the construction to compare people or objects correctly.Teaching methods:1. Task-based teaching method: Give the different tasks during different parts of the lesson, guide them to finish the tasks themselves or through cooperation.2. Communicative language teaching method: Guide the students to communicate with each other with what theyve learnt in the daily life.3. Team-competition teaching method; Enable the students to have the sense of competition.4. Situational teaching method. Guide the students to learn the language in a communicative and meaningful situation.Learning methods:1. Inductive learning2. Collaborative learningTeaching procedures: Warming-up & Lead-in (3 minutes) Presentation (25minutes: 10 minutes for explanation + 15 minutes for practice and activities Consolidation(4 minutes)Activity (7 minutes) Homework (1 minute)I. Warming-up and lead-in 1.Teacher shows the students three groups of interesting pictures: a fat dog and a fatter dog, a big fog and a bigger fog, some cool men and a cooler man. Raise the question: how can we describe the second picture? 2. Teacher shows the students another set of similar pictures and lets them describe. Then lead in the comparative degrees of adjectives. Pan Changjiang is short. Wu Dalang is shorter than Pan Changjiang.Liu Xiang is tall. Yao Ming is taller than Liu Xiang.3. After giving them those examples, they begin to know what theyre going to learn today-the comparative degrees of the adjectives.II. Presentation1.1)Give the students three more pictures and encourage them to describe, using the comparative degrees of the adjectivesAfter the students understand the basic usage, let them practice in pairs. Then show them all the adjectives we have just used and emphasis the “er ” to summarize the first general rule: we should add “er” to the adj. ending with “e” to get the comparative form.2)Lead the students to summarize the second rule: we should just add “r” to the adj. ending with “e” to get the comparative form.First, show them some pictures and let them describe: Kevins family is large. Jerrys family is larger than Kevins family. / Lilys picture is nice. Yukis picture is nicer than Lilys picture. Then ask the students to think about more adjs. ending with “e”, and use them to make sentences. If the students cant find many words, teacher can give them some clues. The following words can be understood easily: hugehuger / bravebraver / safesafer / simplesimpler / strangestranger / ableabler 3) Lead the students to summarize the third rule: for the adjs ending with a consonant alphabet plus “y”, we should change “y” into “i” and plus “er”.First, show them some pictures and let them describe: Question one is easy. Question two is easier that question one. / The boy is angry. The woman is angrier than the boy.The bear is heavy. The elephant is heavier than the bear. Then have a group competition. Have a guessing game together. Let them work in groups, think about other adjs ending with a consonant alphabet plus “y” , then act them out. The others guess! If they cannot think about more, teacher can provide the adjs. for the students who will act and let the others guess: happyhappier/ hungryhungrier / busybusier/ crazycrazier / dirtydirtier/ lovelylovelier / earlyearlier / luckyluckier4)Lead the students to summarize the fourth rule:for the adj. with accent closed-syllable and ends with only one consonant alphabet, we should double the last consonant alphabet and add “er”Since the students have already been familiar with the basic usage of the comparative degrees, teacher just need give them one example and let them practice in pairs. The following adjs will be used: fatfatter / bigbigger / thinthinner / hothotter .5) Lead the students to summarize the fifth rule: we should add “more” in front of the multisyllable adjs and some bisyllable adjs More vivid pictures will be used to make them understand and practice: popularmore popular / dangerousmore dangerous/ athleticmore athleticThen ask them to compare some things : English vs. Math : (Possible answers) more interesting/difficult/useful/importantThe price of a house vs. the price of a villa: more expensiveBeijing Duck vs. hot pot: more deliciousLin zhiling vs. Fan Bingbing: more beautiful6) Use some pictures or the real examples in our life to explain the irregular ones: many/more cars in the streetlittle/ less ricegood/ better (Yukis/ Lilys English) bad/ worse study (Justins/ Jilons English)III. Consolidation 1.Summarize the rules by reviewing the chart on the blackboard to make sure that the students are clear about all the rules.2.Emphasis the basic patterns: than.3.Show them one more picture of each type and let them practice by themselves for consolidation.IV. ActivitySince most students can understand and use the comparative degrees of adjectives, show them a flash about our old campus and our new campus and encourage them to think about the differences . Then let the students have a debate: which campus is better, the old one or the new one? Encourage them to use more comparative degrees of adjectives to describe our wonderful campuses and debate in the right way- be in order, reasonable and polite.V. Homework: Since the pollution on the earth becomes worse and worse, all of us should think about the ways to solve the problem and protect our environment. First show them a set of pictures which compare the bad scenes of the world with what it is like now, and raise a question: What happened to our earth? Then ask the students to write a passage: Our homeland-the earth is getting worse. What happened to it? Use the comparative degrees of adjs. to describe what it is like now and what it was like 10 years ago. What must we do to protect it? So the scenes in the film 2012 will not come true. VI.
