The team, from Flinders University, in Adelaide, says the glasses send out a soft green glow that helps a traveler adapt to changing sleep patterns and time zones in “small steps”. It targets a part of the brain that regulates the human body-clock, by sending signals to the rest of the body that help it slowly realize it is in a different area of the world. It has been suggested the device, called the “Re-Timer”, is currently the only wearable body clock adjustment system commercially available. Scientists say the device, officially launched in South Australia, can help rid the negative effects of long-time travel and bring new relief to insomnia (失眠) sufferers, shift workers and even teenagers. “The light from Re-Timer stimulates the part of the brain responsible for regulating the 24-hour body clock,” said Prof Leon Lack, its chief inventor.Extensive research has shown that green light is one of the most effective wavelengths(波长) for influencing the body clock. The battery-powered device, which retail for 162 in Britain, then sends signals that cause the production of hormones and daily cycles known as circadian rhythms (生理节奏).Those people who want to sleep peacefully but wake earlier, should wear it for 50 minutes in the morning for three days. Those who want a lie-in, should wear it for the same time before bed to delay the body clock. The device, which is powered by an inbuilt rechargeable battery, can also be worn as sunglasses during daily tasks such as reading or using a computer. “The glasses have been designed to be user friendly and comfortable to wear so people can go about their normal activities wearing them at work or at home,” he said, adding they had been designed based on 25 years of university research. It is estimated that up to 94 percent of long-time travelers suffer from jet lag because the body becomes confused to traveling through different time zones. So the glasses are good news to them. It uses the outside world as indicators as to whether it should be awake or asleep including factors such as light, silence or noise. Airlines are said to be seeking a “silver bullet” for the tiredness and confusion that often follow a long-time flight and are in discussions to buy the device. 51. The “time control” glasses work by _. A. getting rid of green light B. creating a quiet environment C. receiving real-time signals D. motivating part of the brain52. If you wear a “Re-Timer” an hour before bed, you will probably _. A. wake up earlier than usualB. spend a longer bed time C. sleep less but feel energeticD. have a sleep without dreams53. The underlined part “silver bullet” refers to _. A. a scientific explanation B. a kind of perfect sunglasses C. a wonderful solution D. an effective security systemBI had thus learned a second fact of great importance: this was that the planet the little prince came from was scarcely any larger than a house! But that did not really surprise me much. I knew very well that in addition to the great planetssuch as the Earth, Jupiter, Mars, Venusto which we have given names, there are also hundreds of others, some of which are so small that one has a hard time seeing them through the telescope. When an astronomer discovers one of these he does not give it a name, but only a number. He might call it, for example, “Asteroid 325.” I have serious reasons to believe that the planet from which the little prince came is the asteroid known as B-612. This asteroid has only once been seen through the telescope. That was by a Turkish astronomer, in 1909. On making his discovery, the astronomer had presented it to the International Astronomical Congress, in a great demonstration . But he was in Turkish costume, and so nobody would believe what he said.Grown-ups are like that. Fortunately, however, for the reputation of Asteroid B-612, a Turkish dictator made a law that his subjects should change to European costume under pain of death . So in 1920 the astronomer gave his demonstration all over again, dressed with impressive style and elegance. And this time everybody accepted his report. If I have told you these details about the asteroid, and made a note of its number for you, it is for the grown-ups and their ways. When you tell them that you have made a new friend, they never ask you any questions about essential matters. They never say to you, “What does his voice sound like? What games does he love best? Does he collect butterflies?” Instead, they demand: “How old is he? How many brothers has he? How much money does his father make?”If you were to say to the grown-ups: “I saw a beautiful house made of rosy brick, with geraniums in the windows and doves on the roof,” they would not be able to get any idea of that house at all. You would have to say to them: “I saw a house that cost $20,000.” Then they would cry out: “Oh, what a pretty house that is!” _, if you say to them: “The proof that the little prince existed is that he was charming, that he laughed, and that he was looking for a sheep.” And what good would it do to tell them that? They would shrug their shoulders, and treat you like a child. But if you said to them: “The planet he came from is Asteroid B-612,” then they would be convinced, and leave you free from their questions. They are like that. One must not hold it against them. Children should always show great tolerance toward grown-up people. But certainly, for us who understand life, figures are a matter of indifference. 54. What are adults like in the eye of the narrator?A. They lack imagination. B. They dont really understand life.C. They dont like Turkish costume.D. They show no tolerance toward children. 55. According to the narrator, which of the following does NOT belong to questions “about essential matters” when talking about a new friend?A. How much does he weigh? B. Does he like flowers?C. Whats his favourite sport? D. Does he have a cat?56. Which of the following might be the most suitable word for the blank?A. However B. Unfortunately C. Instead D. Similarly57. What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph mean?A. Children should listen to what the grown-ups say.B. Children should be independent of the grown-ups.C. Children should try to adapt themselves to the adult world.D. Children shouldnt expect the grown-ups to change their way of thinking.CI live in the land of Disney, Hollywood and year - round sunYou may think People ,n such an attractive, fun - filled place are happier than othersIf so you have some mistaken ideas about the nature of happinessMany intelligent people still think fun equals happinessThe truth is that fun and happiness have little or nothing in commonFun is what we experience during an actHappiness is what we experience after an actIt is a deep, long-lasting emotionGoing to an amusement park or a ball game, watching a movie or television are fun activities that help us relax, temporally forget our problems and maybe even laughBut they do not bring happiness, because their positive effects end when the fun endsI have often thought that if Hollywood stars have a role to play, it is to teach us that happiness has nothing to do with funThey have constant access to exciting parties, fancy cars, expensive homes, everything that spells happiness But in memoir after memoir, they expose Ac unhappiness hidden beneath all their fun: depression, alcoholism, drug addiction, broken marriages and lonelinessAsk a bachelor why he resists marriage even though he finds dating to be less and less satisfyingIf he is honest, he will tell you that he is afraid of making a commitmentFor commitment is in fact quite painfulThe single life is filled with fun, adventure and excitementMarriage has such moments, but they are not its most distinguishing featuresSimilarly, couples that choose not to have children are deciding in favor of painless fun over painful happinessThey can dine out whenever they want and sleep as late as they wantCouples with babies are lucky to get a whole night s sleepI dont know any parent who would choose the word fun to describe raising childrenUnderstanding and accepting that true happiness has nothing to do with fun is one of the most liberating realizations we can ever come toIt liberates time: now we can devote more hours to activities that can truly increase our happinessIt liberates money: buying that new car or those fancy clothes that will do nothing to increase our happiness now seems pointlessAnd it frees us from envy: we now understand that all those rich and famous people we were so sure are happy because they are always having so much fun actually may not be happy at all58What is the passage mainly about?AFun and happinessBSuccess and satisfactionCMarriage and commitmentDEntertainment and responsibility59The author probably agrees that _Afun creates long - lasting satisfactionBlong - standing fun may lead to happinessCfun is short-lived while happiness is long-lastingDfun provides enjoyment while pain leads to happiness60What does the author think of marriage?AIt ends in pain BIt means commitmentCIt affords greater fun DIt leads to raising children61If one gets the real meaning of happiness, he _Awill start a business Bwon t place too much value on moneyCwill seek for freedom Dwont devote himself to his familyDTime and how we experience it have always puzzled usPhysicists have created fascinating theories, but their time is measured by a pendulum and is not psychological time, which leaps with little regard to the clock or calendarAs some-one who understood the distinction observed, When you sit with a nice girl for two hours it seems like a minute, but when you sit on a hot stove, a minute seems like two hoursPsychologists have long noticed that larger units of time, such as months and years, fly on swifter wings as we ageThey also note that the more time is structured with schedules and appointments, the more rapidly it seems to passFor example, a day at the office flies compared with a day at the beachSince most of us spend fewer days at the beach and more at the office as we age, an increase in structured tune could well be to blame for why time seems to speed up as we grow olderExpectation and familiarity also make time seem to flow more rapidlyAlmost all of us have had the experience of driving somewhere weve never been before. Surrounded by unfamiliar scenery, with no real idea of when well arrive, we experience the trip as lasting a long time. But the return trip, although exactly as long, seems to take far less time. The novelty of the outward journey has become routine. Thus taking a different route on occasions can often help slow the clock. When was become as identical as identical as beads on a string, they mix together, and even months become a single day. To counter this, try to find ways to interrupt the structure of your dayto stop time, so to speak.Learning something new is one of the ways to slow the passage of time. One of the reasons the days of our youth seems so full and long is that these are the days of learning and discovery. For many of us, learning ends when we leave school, but this doesnt have to be.62The underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 is used to show .Apsychological time is quite puzzlingBtime should not be measured by a pendulumCphysical time is different from psychological timeDphysical theory has nothing to do with the true sense of time63Why do units of time fly faster as we grow older?AOur sense of time changes.BWe spend less time at the beach.CMore time is structured and scheduled.DTime is structured with too many appointments.64In Paragraph 3 “novelty” probably means .AexcitementBunfamiliarityCimaginationDamusement65The purpose of the passage is to .Agive various explanations about timeBdescribe how we experience time psychologicallyCshow the different ideas of physicists and psychologists on timeDexplain why time flies and how to slow it down psychologically第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,共10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。A 7.0 magnitude(级)earthquake killed more than 230,000 people in Haiti. Then an 8.8 magnitude quake killed more than 900 people in Chile. And few weeks later, a 6.0 magnitude quake struck rural eastern Turkey, killing at least 57 people. The earthquakes kept coming hard and fast. 66 Its not. The problem is whats happening above ground, not underground, experts say. 67 Theyre rapidly putting up buildings that cant stand up to earth quakes, scientists believer. And news reports and better earthquake monitoring make it seem as if earth quakes are increasing all the time.On average, there are 134 earthquakes a year that have a magnitude between 6.0 and 6.9. So far this year there have been 40 earthquakesmore than in most years for that time period. But thats because the 8.8 quake in Chile caused a large number of strong aftershocks. Also, its not the number of quakes, but their destructive effects that gain attention. T
