Yet this fruit with its fuzzy brown skin and bright green flesh is not native to New Zealand and has been grown there since 1904. After 16 trip to China, high school principal Isabel Fraser returned to New Zealand 17 some seeds of a special fruit. She gave these seeds to a farmer and in 1910 the first fruit 18 (ripen). At this time the fruit was called “Chinese gooseberries”Chinese in honour of their origin and gooseberries because they were similar in shape to an English fruit 19 (call) the gooseberry. Other farmers soon began growing Chinese gooseberries and in 1924, one of these farmers developed the green coloured variety, 20 is most well-known today. So well did the fruit grow in New Zealand that in 1952 Chinese gooseberries were exported to England 21 the first time. Then, in 1959 the fruit was exported to the United States too. At this time, the name was changed to kiwi fruit to attract the American market. The other reason for changing the name was 22 the US had an import tax on berries of all kinds. 23 kiwi fruit did not fit into any tax category they entered the US tax free. Today, 24 (vary) kiwi fruits are exported from New Zealand to many countries around the world. They are also grown in 25 countries, such as Australia and the United States, but they are still called kiwi fruit. 阅读(共两节,满分50分)第一节 阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。AThe phone rang at 2:30 that morning and scared me out of my wits. “Mom, Im sorry to be calling so late, but I just have to talk to someone about this.” It was my son Lee. Celebrated annually on 26 January, it marks the anniversary of the 1788 arrival of the First Fleet of British Ships at Port Jackson, New South Wales, and raising of the Flag of Great Britain at that site by Governor Arthur Phillip. In contemporary Australia, celebrations reflect the diverse society and landscape of the nation, and are marked by community and family events, reflections on Australian history, official community awards, and citizenship ceremonies welcoming new immigrants into the Australian community. The meaning and significance of Australia Day have evolved over time. Unofficially, or historically, the date has also been variously named Anniversary Day, Invasion Day, Foundation Day, and ANA Day. 26 January 1788 marked the announcement of British governing the eastern seaboard of Australia (then known as New Holland). Although it was not known as Australia Day until over a century later, records of celebrations on 26 January date back to 1808, with the first official celebration of the formation of New South Wales held in 1818. On New Years Day 1901, the British colonies (殖民地) of Australia formed a Federal government, marking the birth of modern Australia. A national day of unity and celebration was looked for. It was not until 1935 that all Australian states and areas had adopted the use of the term Australia Day to mark the date, and not until 1994 that the date was consistently marked by a public holiday on that day by all states and areas. In contemporary Australia, the holiday is marked by the presentation of the Australian of the Year Awards on Australia Day Eve, announcement of the Australia Day Honours list and speeches from the Governor-General and Prime Minister. It is an official public holiday in every state and territory of Australia, unless it falls on a weekend in which case the following Monday is a public holiday instead. With community festivals, concerts and citizenship ceremonies, the day is celebrated in large and small communities and cities around the nation. Australia Day has become the biggest annual civic event in Australia.36. Australia Day is in memory of _. Lets look at two psychological experiments which will give you the key to happy interpersonal relations. The first experiment is called the “Hawthorne effect” after Hawthorne, Illinois, where the experiment took place. A group of psychologists examined the work patterns of two groups of workers in the Western Electric Company. Before the experiment the management talked to both groups of workers and explained that they wanted to find the best working environment for them. The psychologists changed the working conditions for one group twice but left the other group alone. They were surprised to find that productivity increase on both occasions and in both groups. They concluded that the increase in productivity came from the attention given to the workers by the management. It had increased their motivation and so they had worked harder. In other words, if you take an interest in others they will want to please you and you will have good relations with them. The second experiment shows what happens to personal relations if you are rude to, ignore or abuse others. After Martin Luther King, Jr was killed in the 1960s, a teacher, Jane Elliott, living in an allwhite town decided to help her class of young children understand why the Civil Rights Movement had been necessary in America. She divided the class into two groups: one with blue eyes and the other with brown eyes. Other eye colours such as hazel or green were excluded from his exercise. Then she told the class that browneyed people were cleverer than blueeyed ones because of an agent for brown colour found in their blood. Blueeyed people were stupid, lazy and not to be trusted. Jane Elliott did not need to say any more. The browneyed students quickly became accustomed to their new role as the leaders of the class. The blueeyed students became quiet and withdrawn. Jane Elliott had shown that the way people are treated affects not only their behaviour but also their confidence and their academic performance.41.
