Did you have a good weekend? What did you do last Sunday? You can talk about it with your deskmate. Please pay attention to the form of the verbs, use past forms to express the actions in the past.S1: What did you do last weekend?S2: I played basketball with my friends. What about you?S1: Oh, I visited my grandparents in the countryside.S2: That sounds interesting.Ask and answer more activities.Step 2 Presentation1. Teach the new words. Teacher asks one student to read the new words to see if he or she can read them correctly. Practice reading the new words: repeat after the teacher, read together/in pairs/one by one. Then read and remember the words. Explain the meaning and usage of some words.2. Teach Activity 1a.T: Lets look at the picture. Each picture shows something a person did in the past. What did the person do? Please name each activity.Individual student names: stayed at home, went to New York City, visited my uncle, went to summer camp, went to the mountains, went to the beach, visited museums. Point out the numbered list of activities. T: Read the activities after me. Ask students to match each phrase with one of the pictures.T: Write the letter of each picture next to the name of the activity.Point out the sample answer. Check the answers.3. Teach Activity 1b. The teacher reads the instructions to the students. Get the students to read the names in the box after teacher. Tell students to look at the pictures and say what the person did in each picture. For example: She went to the mountains. Tell students they will hear three conversations. People are talking about what they did on vacations. Then play the recording. The first time, students just listen. Play the recording again, have students try to fill in the blanks with the numbers. Check up the answers. Play the recording the third time, let the students repeat after it. Then practice reading the conversation.4. Teach Activity 1c. Point out the example conversation. Ask a pair of students to read the conversation to the class. T: Now please work in pairs. Ask and answer about where Tina/Bob/Sally/Xiang Hua and Tom went on vacation. Divide students into pairs to make conversations. As they work, move around the room checking the progress and offering help if necessary. Finally, invite several pairs to act out for the whole class.Step 3 Practice1. Teach Activity 2a. T: Lets look at the box in Activity 2a. Here are three peoples names: Grace, Kevin and Julie. But we dont know where they go on vacation. Now, lets listen to a recording about their vacations. Please listen carefully and complete the chart. Play the recording the first time, students only listen. Play the recording a second time, students fill in the charts with the information from recording. Then, check the answers with the whole class.2. Teach Activity 2b. Call attention to the chart in Activity 2b. Ask a student to read through the names and activities listed. T: Now listen to the recording again. This time, please listen to the conversations and put a checkmark in the “Yes, I did.” or “No, I didnt.” volumns. Point out the sample answer under “Yes, I did.” in the first blank after the words “Grace go with anyone?” T: Did Grace go with anyone? Ss: Yes, she did. Play the recording again. Ask students to put checkmarks in the correct blanks. Finally, check the answers.3. Groupwork T: Lets work in groups of three. One of you will be Grace, one will be Kevin, and one will be Julie. Ask each other about the vacations. You can talk about the activities from the chart in 2b or any other activities you like. As students talk, move around the room, monitoring the conversations. Later, ask a group of students to present their conversation to the class.Step 4 ConsolidationTeach Activity 2d.First, give students several minutes to read the conversation individually. Underline some difficulties.Then, invite several pairs to role-play the conversation, correct mistakes if any.Explain some language points. Finally, divide students into pairs to make new conversations to talk about their vacations.Step 5 SummaryIn this period, weve learnt some key phrases and sentences to talk about past events. First we learnt some phrases describing activities by matching them with the correct pictures. Then we consolidated these target language by doing listening practice. And we have also practiced using the target language and the simple past tense to make conversations.Step 6 Homework1. Review the key words and phrase.2. Bob Step 2 PresentationGrammar Focus.First, review the grammar box. Ask students to read the questions and answers individually.Review the difference between regular past forms and irregular past forms Then, explain the usage of past tense in special questions. Write lists of each kind of verb on the board under the headings Present and Past. Say a sentence with each verb, first in present tense form and then in past tense form. For example: “I visit New York City.” And “I visited New York City.” Point out the present tense forms in the first column and the related past tense forms in the second. Point out the past tense questions. Ask questions with each past tense verb and ask the class to respond with the correct “Yes” and “No” answers for each. For example: T: Did you go to Central Park? S: Yes, I did./No, I didnt. Lead students to read the sentences in the box together. Explain the use of indefinite pronouns. Lead students to make some sentences with these indefinite pronouns.Step 3 Practice1. Teach Activity 3a. T: First, have a quick look at the conversation in Activity 3a to get the main idea. Then, complete the conversation with the words given in the box. Do it individually. Give students three minutes to do it, as they work, move around the room and offer help as needed. Finally, invite a pair of students to role-play the conversation and check the answers. Have students role-play the conversation in pairs.2. Teach Activity 3b. T: After finishing the drilling in 3a, you must have mastered the use of indefinite pronouns. Now, lets have a look at the e-mail passage from Mark to Bill in 3b. Read it silently, then tell me what Mark talked about. Invite two students to point out the main idea of the e-mail. Then, give students several minutes to complete the passage with the words in the box individually. Finally, check the answers with the whole class. Lead students to read the complete passage together, pay attention to the pronunciation and tone.Step 4 ConsolidationFirst, read the instruction of Activity 3c for students so that they know what to do and how to do this exercise. Then lead students to read the short phrases in the first column and explain their meanings. Divide students into groups to do interview work and finish the chart. Give them enough time to do it. As they work, move around the room checking the progress and offering help as needed. Finally, invite some students to present their results. Prompt students to make conversation in pairs with the results.Step 5 SummaryIn this period, we explained the use of past tense in special questions and the use of indefinite pronouns. Then, we consolidated the knowledge by completing a dialogue and an e-mail passage with the indefinite pronouns. Call attention to Picture c and Picture d. Teach exciting and boring. T: This time, please look at Picture c and Picture d. What do you think of these two situations? S: In Picture c, it must be an exciting performance, but in Picture d, it looks very boring. Point out the blank line in front of each numbered word. Ask students to match each word with a picture by writing the letter of each picture in the blank in front of the correct word in Activity 1a. Check the answers. Point out the happy face and the unhappy face in 1b. T: The happy face is for good things. The unhappy face is for bad things. Call attention to the six words in Activity 1a. Now write each word under the happy face or under the unhappy face in 1b. Point out the sample answer. T: The word delicious is under the happy face because delicious is a happy word. Ask students to finish the activity individually. Then check the answers.Step 3 PracticeListening. (Activity 1c & 1d)T: Lisa went on vacation last holiday. Now she is talking about her vacation. Please listen to this conversation and answer the questions in 1c. Read the questions to the class. Play the recording the first time. Students only listen. Play the recording a second time. T: Listen to the recording and write the answer to each question. Check the answers.T: Listen to the recording again. This time, write down what Lisa thinks of these things in the blanks in the chart. Point out the sample answer. T: What did Lisa say about her vacation? It was great. Play the recording the first time. Students fill in the chart. Play the recording a second time. Ask students to finish filling in the blanks and to check their answers. Finally, check the answers by inviting some volunteers to present their answers. T: Id like several students to say something about Lisas vacation. For example:Lisa went to Tokyo on vacation. She liked her vacation very much. It was great. The people there were friendly and the food was delicious. The museums were interesting but they very crowded. The stores were expensive.Step 4 ConsolidationTeach Activity 1e. Call attention to the question words. Have a student read them to the class. T: Please make conversation in pairs. Student A, you are Lisas friend. Student B, you are Lisa. Student A, use these question words to ask Lisa questions about her vacation. Student B, you can use the information in Activity 2a & 2b to answer. For example: Where did you go on vacation? I went to Tokyo on vacation. As students talk, move around the room, offering pronunciation and language help as needed. Ask several pairs to act their conversations out.Step 5 SummaryIn this period, weve consolidated the simple past tense. First, we learnt some adjectives into two groups. Next, we reviewed the past tense by doing listening practice. Finally, we consolidated the mastery of the simple past tense by making conversations to talk about Lisas vacation.Step 6 Homework1.
