My leadership journey1. In your own words, what is leadership all about?Leadership is about using ones positive attitudes to influence others, to encourage and support teammates to strive for common goals in a team. For leader itself:Every member in a team can take the role of a leader and make positive influence on a team. Leaders have positive characteristics such as being self-confident, optimistic, enthusiastic, persistent, helpful, socially responsible and always thinking of others and the society.For a team:Leaders are good at inspiring and supporting teammates, using personal relationship or other techniques, and cultivating the sense of belonging to a team and encouraging everyone to strive for the team goals.Leaders think more and higher, they always make whole and macroscopical plans for the team goals and distribute tasks to teammates according to everyones strength and weakness. Leaders direct and manage a team, making significant decisions, solving emergent problems but less devoted in specific staffs in team work. 2. What do you think are the qualities of an excellent leader? 1) Being confident, optimistic, enthusiastic, persistent, brave, hardworking, determined and likely to use these positive characteristics or attitudes to influence others;2) High self-recognition, good self-management;3) Dare to dream, dare to change with the society and age, even to change the society and the world;4) Willing to help and serve others, having high social responsibility and having contributed a lot to the society, such as being dedicated in the equality and humanity in the world;5) Sociability, good interpersonal skills;6) Thinking in the long run, good at making strategies and solve problems;7) Have love in his or her heart;3. What behavior or conduct do you expect to see from an excellent leader?1) Always be a role model in our lives, such as do well academically, understand others, have good temper, always smile, etc. 2) Always challenge himself or herself and continue to make progress and create miracles in his or her own life; 3) Always be the different and excellent one in a group of people, no matter in communication, public speaking, personal relationship or other aspects. 4) Concern about others and help those in need;5) Shape those who are not good enough to be a better person;6) Contribute to the society, such as donation, volunteer activities;7) Change his or her country, even the whole world; such as establish a new political system or rule, invent a new technology, stabilize the local or world economy, carry forward local culture, etc;8) Devote in the world equality, humanity and peace, such as womens liberalization, equal rights for Africa-American, world peace, etc.4. Describe or narrate an experience where you personally worked and were inspired by an excellent leader. What impressed you most about the person? What lessons did you learn from that experience?I remember the first time that I interacted with HC students-the first HC workshop-“IF”. The workshop was really good and I started to learn what team work is, what leadership is and I became clearer of what my future goal and plan is. I remember that we played several games and HC students used games to illustrate and lead us to understand team cooperation and leadership. From that time on, I found that every time when I was with HC students and every time I engaged in those interesting games, I felt really excited and was inspired strongly to come up with my own ideas and join HC, because I wanted to be the person like HC students who are energetic, active and positive.The most impressive HC students were James Law, the president of Honors College Students Association. He speaks good English and is humorous, outgoing and smiling a lot. I was inspired by his presentation skills, being easy-going, humorous, confident, concrete, well-prepared and also easy to understand. Besides, I admired a lot of his abilities. As the president of HCSA, he must be busy, but he did well academically. At that time, I told myself I should try my best to join HC, because I wanted to be a person like James, an excellent leader with confidence, multiple abilities and bright future. Fortunately, I joined the HC through my own efforts and luck, and in the second year, I became the vice president of dormitory students association, college assistant of pearl jubilee college and volunteer teacher in YES WE DO summer camp organized by several organizations in Hong Kong. Nowadays, I try to develop multiple abilities and continue to challenge and improve myself, and also have more and more concrete career plans. I can not say that I am better than the James one year ago, but I should admit that I am better than myself before and I also can manage well in multiple fields, such as academy, students union, social work, etc. I learned that a person should continue to be inspired by better ones, learn from them, then make adjustment and strive for higher goals and improve themselves, eventually shape a better him or her self. By this, a colorful and meaningful life will be gained and give us a lot of satisfaction.5. Describe or narrate an experience as a leader. What was that experience wherein you demonstrated your leadership skills? How did you behave as a leader? How were you able to help others in your team? What did you learn from that experience?Last semester, I took the challenge to be the vice president of dormitory students association and one of the biggest activities. This year is the first music festival in the University of Macau. I was one of the leaders in the commission and I was in charge of managing all the singing and dancing performance and guaranteeing their quality. The president of our association was in charge of inside jobs and the other vice president was responsible for the promotion part.We prepared for it almost one month ahead. We first listed all the possible performers, and then I called them one by one to invite them to perform in our show. However, it is not easy to find many excellent singers and dancers because of the busy college life. I remembered that it cost me many phone calls and messages and two difficult dinners to successfully invite Roddick to sing in our show. After basically confirming all the performances, I distributed my teammates to every performer, helping them to arrange time and place for practice, serve them and guarantee the quality. In the process, my teammates learned about the demand and status of every performer and then I could manage the whole operation of the show. Also, because I am good at dancing, my friends and I instructed three dancing performances and I along with them practiced dancing many nights. I did two scenes in this show and also was the manager of the show. Besides, before the show, we practiced four times, aiming to give performers support and improve the quality. Actually, I acted as the leader of the team related to the performances and I kept communicating with my teammates and always showed my thanks to teammates and also performers. I distributed specific tasks to them and asked for immediate feedback, making the plan move smoothly and adjustable to new problems?. Also, our commission, which consists of five main heads, communicated or met everyday to discuss all the staffs, from the promotion, performances, scene, and money to everydays accidental problems. Actually, that period of time was really happy and tough, we slept late and even discussed for the whole night just to make the show better and achieve our own dreams of holding a successful show. If we did not support each other and strived for our common goal, we will not be that enthusiastic and devote our whole hearts to it, without any so-called return. I remember almost two weeks before the show. After class, my whole life was related to the show, we discussed, practiced dancing, did rehearsals, designed the stage, etc. I thought I might not go through every problem and I was afraid of the mess of the final show. However, I learned that a team and a group of people can give you enormous power and support you to the end. In addition, I like pursuing perfection before this show, but I found that big event was complex and one could not achieve goals by himself, so I leaned one principle: first, cooperate in harmony; second, do not demand that high, trying ones best is ok because many goals need time and experience to accomplish; Last but not least, seize every precise opportunity and do not be afraid, everything will be gone and your friends are along with you, always remember you are not alone. 6. What are your own strengths and talents as a leader?1) I am hard working and have high self-management, so I believe besides managing myself well, I can inspire and manage others well.2) I have many positive characteristics such as being confident, optimistic and enthusiastic and communicative, so I am willing to use my positive attitudes to influence and help others.3) I have love in my heart and am willing to contribute to the society and help those in need.4) After being the leader in students union, I found I love the role of leader and like managing a team or an event, so I believe if I am in favor of it, I can do it well.5) As a women leader, she can use her soft skills to influence and concern teammates.7. What are your areas of improvement?1) Learn to manage emotion, be more patient and understand first before evaluating and making comments.2) Try to find everyones shinning points and learn from everyone, also treat everyone as equal.3) Persuade myself to engage more, because we may find something valuable from every little staff.4) Have better time management, better sleep, and more physical exercises.8. What concrete resolutions should you do in order to be a better leader?1) Keep a blog to reflect on my behavior, attitudes as a leader, record my problems and solutions every time when I have deep thinking.2) Finish existing tasks well and also seize opportunities to develop other fields which valuable and not access before. For example, be a good vice president and lead a good team; besides, seize valuable opportunities to develop other abilities, such as compete in business public speaking competition to accumulate business experience and improve presentation skills, to join model association to shape better figure and temperament and so on.3) Join
