Teaching procedures and ways教学过程与方式Step Warming up Talk about food. List the names of several foods on the board.T: Hello, boys and girls. We have learned the name of some food. For example: pizza , broccoli, ice cream, mushrooms . Do you like them? For example, Do you like pizza?S1: Yes, I like it.T: (Turning to another student) Do you like broccoli?S2: No, I dont like it.Next to that list, write the sentence, What do you think of _? and leave a blank at the end. Ask a student the question, substituting the word pizza: What do you think of pizza? Help him or her answer: I like pizza or I dont like pizza.T: What do you think of pizza?S1: I like it.T: ( Turning to another student )What do you think of broccoli?S2: I dont like it.Then talk about the names of TV shows. T: We watch TV almost every day, and many students like watching TV. However, there are many different kinds of TV shows in China. You can choose any one of them, if you like. Then what do you think of game shows?S1: I think it is very interesting. I like it very much.T: (Turning to another student) How about you?S2: I dont like it .T: (Turning to another student) What do you think of a soap opera?S3: I love it.T: (Turning to another student ) What about you? What do you think of a soap opera?S4: I dont like it.Step Matching (1a)Ask the students to read the words and the pictures, and then match the names with the pictures a-e.T: At weekends, we can watch many different kinds of TV shows at home. In this unit, we are going to talk about the names of different kinds of TV shows and the opinions about the TV shows. Now we have five names of TV shows on the left of the pictures and five pictures marked with a, b, c, d and e. Read the words and look at the pictures on page 65 and try to match the TV shows with the pictures. Encourage or help the students to say something about the picture and do the match work. T: What can you see in Picture a?S1: I can see a man in a sports hat. This is a sports show. Write “sports show” on the blackboard. Ask the students to repeat the words and write “a” on the line next to the words “sports show.” (as show below)Go on with the others in the same way. Then check the answers with the students.Show the following. sports show a game show b sitcom c soap opera d talk show e Step Listening (1b)First make sure the students understand the meaning of the smiley faces. T: Look at 1b, these smiley faces show you what the words “stand, mind, love and like” mean. If you dont mind something, you dont either like it or dislike it. If you cant stand something, you dislike it very strongly. For example, your least favorite food is something you cant stand. If you love something, you like it very, very much. For example, your favorite food is something you love. Now listen to what Mark says about TV shows. Play the recording. Let the students just listen. Then point out the blank lines where students will write a letter of the TV shows next to the words Mark uses. Play the recording for a second time. T: Look at the lines beside the words “loves, likes, doesnt mind, doesnt like, cant stand”. Youll write the letter on the line after listening to the dialogue again. OK? Now listen. Play the recording. (When the speakers talk about “sitcom”, point to the name “sitcom” as shown above if necessary.) T: Well now, can you answer my question: What does Mark say about soap operas?S1: “I dont like them.”T: Good. What does Mark say about game shows?S2: “I love them.”T: Right. What does Mark say about sitcoms?S3: “I dont mind them.”If the students can understand the listening material well, ask them the following questions.T: Great. What does Mark say about sports shows?S4: “I like them.”T: Great. What does Mark say about talk shows?S5: “I cant stand them.”Check if the students get the right information in the above way. If not, play the part that the students cant understand well or get the right information again (and again).Further activity: Ask the students to do some pair-work in the following way if they can understand the listening material well. T: Now repeat after the recording. Girls repeat the questions, boys the answers. Sample: Girls: (repeat after the recording) What do you think of soap opera, Mark?Boys: (repeat after the recording) I dont like them. .Then ask them to say the conversation without the help of the recording. Step Pairwork (1c)Ask the students to make conversations in pairs.Show the following. What do you think of soap operas / game shows / sitcoms / sports shows / talk shows?I dont like them. / I love them. / I dont mind them. / I cant stand them. / I like them.Sample conversation 1:S1: What do you think of soap operas?S2: I dont like them. / I dont mind them.Sample conversation 2:S1: What do you think of game shows?S2: I love them. / I cant stand them.Then ask them to further practice the dialogue. (See Teaching resources III-IV)Step V Homework 1. Ask the students to find some TV shows and practice talking about what they think of them. 2. Learn the words in this unit (on page 119) by heart. What did you learn in the last period?S: We learned to talk about different kinds of TV shows.T: What TV shows do you like watching?S1: I like watching sitcoms.T: Then what do you think of talk show? S1: I like it. It is very interesting.T: (Turning to a girl) What TV shows do you like watching?S2: I like a soap opera.T: What do you think of sports shows?S2: Sports show? I cant stand them. .Ask as many students the similar questions as possible. Step II Listening (2a)First ask the students to listen and number the expressions. T: This is a recording about TV shows. Look at the expressions on the right of the picture in 2a. The people on the recording use these expressions as they talk about the TV shows. You will number these words and phrases 1-5 in the order you hear them on the recording. Listen and number the expressions. Play the recording. Ask the students to listen carefully and number the expressions. Then ask the students to listen to and repeat the dialogue after the recording. T: Well done. Now listen to the dialogue and repeat after the recording. Do like this: The students in the first three lines repeat after Speaker A, the rest Speaker B. Notice: number the expressions while repeating. OK?A sample: SA: What do you think of Dumpling King?SB: I love it. .Then change the roles.SB: What do you think of Dumpling King?SA: I love it. .After this, ask the students to practice the conversation without the help of the recording and then fill in the blanks in 2b. Then cheek the answers.Step Talking about TV shows (2c)Ask the students to work in pairs, ask and answer about TV shows they know.T: Look at 2c. Work in pairs. Role play the conversation as shown on the right. One of you asks, and the other answers. Before you start, read the example conversation first. Sample conversation 1:S1: What do you think of soap operas?S2: I cant stand them. S1: Well, what TV show do you like?S2:I like sports shows.Sample conversation 2:S1: What do you think of Tommy?S2: I like him.S1: Amanda?S2: I love her, too.Then ask some pairs of students to say the conversations for the class. Step Grammar Ask the students to read the sentences in the grammar box and sum up the sentence structure. T: Now read aloud the sentences in the grammar box. Then write down the sentence structure in you exercise-books. 1. What do you / they / your parents think of _?I / We / They like / love it / them.I / We / They dont mind it / them. I / We / They cant stand it / them. 2. What does he / she / Mark / your sister think of _?He / She likes / loves it / them. He / She cant stand it / them. He / She dont mind it / them. Ask the students to pay attention to the bold type words in the above form. Ask them to explain how to use “does / do” and singular “-s”. Practice suggestion: Ask the students to work in groups and write down their own opinions on the TV shows in Activity 1a on a card or a piece of paper, show their work to the group members. And then ask and answer questions. Sample dialogue 1:S1: What do you think of sports shows?S2: I like it. What do you think of sports shows?S3: I dont mind them. What do you think of sports shows?S4: I love them. What do you think of sitcoms?S1: I cant stand them. What do you think of sitcoms?S2: I cant stand them either. What do you think of sitcoms?S3: I like them. What about you?S4: I like them, too. .Sample dialogue 2:S1: What do you think of soap operas?S2: I cant stand them. Ask the students to search the Internet and newspapers to find as many TV shows as possible. 2. Ask the students to prepare a dialogue giving opinions about different kinds of TV shows. CCTV, CETV, BTV, TJTV, CATV, TBSEnglish Today, Sports News, Healthy Living, Culture-China, Cartoons, Weather Report, Game show, Man and Nature, Evening News, Chinese Cooking, Animal World, Luck 52Talk with the students about different TV channels and TV shows.T: Yesterday I asked you to search the Internet or newspapers. Did you find any channels? S1: Yes, there are many channels such as CCTV, CETV, BTV, TJTV.S2: And CATV.T: What do you think of them?S3: I like CCTV-2 because I like Lucky 52.S4: I like CATV because I like Life Under the Sea.S5: I like CETV because its good for students.T: Well, what TV shows do you like best?S6: I like English Today, I like CCTV-5 .T: (Turning to another student) Do you like Animal World?S7: Yes. It was great. I watch it every day.S8: I dont like it. Some animals are dangerous. T: What do you think of Healthy Living?S9: I dont mind it. But my parents like it very much.S10: I cant stand it. Ask Student A in each pair to look at the chart on page 67. Ask Student B to look at the chart on page 85. Remind the students not to look at their partners pages.Say the first question and answer with a student. Pretend you are Student A and work with a student partner. Say, What does Wang Lin think of “Sports News”? Have Student B to look at the answer on his or her chart on page 85. Student B answers, Alan likes sports News. Show students that you are writing in the word loves after Alans name on the chart on page 67.Then Student B asks, What does Alan think of “Sports News”? You answer, Alan likes Sports News. Have the students write the word “like” after Alans name on the chart on page 85. Sample dialogues: SA: What does Alan think of “English Today”?SB: Alan / She loves “English Today”. SA writes in “loves” after Alans name on the chart on page 67.SB: What does Wang Lin think of “English Today”?SB: Wang Lin / He loves “English Today”.SB writes in “loves” after Alans name on the chart on page 85.Ask the students to talk about the other TV shows in the same way, and then fill in the blanks in 3a on pages 67 and 85. Step Reading and filling in the blanks (3b)Read the dialogue with a student. Every time one of you comes to a blank, say blank. Call attention to the chart that the students completed in Activity 3a. T: Look at the chart in 3a. Well use the words in the chart to fill in the blanks in the dialogue in Activity 3b. Now Ill read the dialogue with one of the students. Notice, every time we come to a blank say “blank”. OK? T: I am host. You are Alan. Now lets begin. Do you like to watch TV? BLANK.S: Yes, I do.T : What do you think of Sport News? BLANK.S: I like it.T: How about Healthy Living? BLANK.S: I dont like it.T: What do you think of Animal World? BLANK.S: I dont mind it.T: And Culture China? BLANK.S: I love it.T: How about Chinese Cooking?S: Oh, I cant stand it. Cooking is for moms!Ask the students to work in pairs and read the dialogue repeatedly. Then change the roles to read again. Step Making a survey (4)Ask the students to name some TV shows they know about. Write the list on the blackboard. Try to include some that the students like and some they dont like. Show the following. Cartoon, CCTV News, Evening News, Worlds Report, Weather Report, Talk Show, Hello, the world, Sports News, Tell it like it is, Soap Operas, Sports Show, Game show Then point out the dialogue in the speech bubble. Ask some pairs of students to role play the dialogue. Then point out the sample answer in the chart. T: This TV show is called “Tell it like it is!” I like it, so I write “I like it” under “What I think”. Lin Peng likes it too. So I write “Lin Peng” under “Students who agree with me”. Now work in groups, write the names of more TV shows, ask and answer questions and fill in the blanks with what you think and find students who agree with you. Sample work: S1: (Write “Evening News” under “TV shows) I like “Evening News”. Do you like it, Luo Ping?S2 :Yes, I like it too. S1 writes “I like it” after “Evening News” under What I think and “Luo Ping” under “Students who agree with me”. Then go on with the survey. S1: What do you think of “Evening News”, S3?S3: I love it. S1 adds the name of S3 beside “Luo Ping”. Then go on with the survey.S1: (write “World Report” under “TV shows”) I like “World Report”. Do you like it, S4?S4: No, I cant stand it. I love Sports News. S1: What do you think of it, S5?S5: Sorry. I cant stand it, either. S1: What do you think of it, S6?S6: I like it. .After a few minutes, ask the students to report the survey result to the class. A sample report:Luo Ping likes “Evening News”. I agree with him. S4 loves “Sports News”. I dont agree with her. I cant stand it. I like “World Report”. S6 likes it too. But S4 and S5 cant stand it. Step V Discussion Divide the class into groups of five. Discuss the TV programs they like, dont like, dont mind and cant stand. Then choose one to report in class.A sample report: One of us likes CCTV News very much. All of us love Cartoon. Nobody likes Soap Operas, because they are boring. Some students like Lucky 52 because its fashionable. I like Healthy Living because its good for our health. Step Homework1. Ask the students to search the Internet and keep down the names of some films. 2.
