ReadingA What makes a person a scientist? Does he have ways or tools of learning that are different from those of others? The answer is “no”. It isnt the tools a scientist uses but how he uses these tools which make him a scientist. You will probably agree that knowing how to use a power is important to a carpenter. You will probably agree, too, that knowing how to investigation, how to discover information, is important to everyone. The scientist, however, goes one step further; he must be sure that he has a reasonable answer to his questions and that his answer he gets to many questions is into a large set of ideas about how the world works. The scientists knowledge must be exact. Theres no room for half right or right just half the time. He must be as nearly right as the conditions permit. What works under one set of conditions at one time must work under the same conditions at other times. If the conditions are different, any changes the scientist observes in a demonstration(实证) must be explained by the changes in the conditions. This is one reason why investigations are important in science. Albert Einstein, who developed the Theory of Relativity, arrived at the theory through mathematics. The accuracy(正确性) of his mathematics was later tested through investigation. Einsteins ideas were proved to be correct. A scientist uses many tools for measurements. Then the measurements are used to make mathematical calculations(计算) that may test his investigations1. What makes a scientist according to the passage? A. The tools he uses. B. His ways of learning C. The way he uses his tools D. The various tools he uses2. “knowing how to investigation, how to discover information, is important to everyone.” The writer says this to show _. A. the importance of information B. the difference between scientists and ordinary people. C. the importance of thinking D. the difference between carpenters and ordinary people3. A sound scientific theory should be one that _. A. works under one set of conditions at one time and also works under the same conditions at other times B. doesnt allow any change even under different conditions C. Can be used many times under different conditions D. Can be used for many purposes4. What is the main idea of the passage? A. Scientists are different from ordinary people. B. The Theory of Relativity. C. Exactness is the core (核心) of science. D. Exactness and way of using tools are the keys to making of a scientist.B Are you happy? Do you remember a time when you were happy? Are you seeking happiness today? Many have sought a variety of sources for their feelings of happiness. Some have put their heart and effort into their work. Too many have turned to drugs and alcohol. Most of their efforts have a root in one common fact: People are looking for a lasting source of happiness. Unfortunately, I believe that happiness escapes many because they misunderstand the process and journey of finding it. I have heard many people say that, “Ill be happy when I get my new promotion.” Or “Ill be happy when I lose that extra 20 pounds.” The list goes on and on. You probably have a few of your own you could add if you wanted. This thinking is dangerous because it presupposes that happiness is a “response” to having, being or doing something. In life, we all experience stimulus and response. Stimulus is when a dog barks at you and bares his teeth. Response is when your heart beats faster, your palms get sweaty and you prepare to run. Today, some people think that an expensive car is a stimulus. Happiness is a response. A great paying job is a stimulus. Happiness is a response. A loving relationship is a stimulus. Happiness is a response. This belief leaves us thinking and feeling: “Ill be happy when” It has been my finding that actually the opposite is true. I believe that happiness is a stimulus and response is what life brings to those who are truly happy. When we are happy, we tend to have more success in our work. When we are happy, people want to be around us and enjoy loving relationships. When we are happy, we more naturally take better care of our bodies and enjoy good health. Happiness is NOT a response rather, it is a stimulus.Happiness is a conscious choice we make every day of our lives. For unknown reason to me, many choose to be painful, unsuccessful and angry most of the time. Happiness is not something that happens to us after we get something we want we usually get things we want after we choose to be happy.I have made only one simple rule for my own happiness: Every day above ground is a GOOD day. Therefore, I tend to have a lot of good (and happy) days continually.5. The second paragraph mainly tells us that people seek happiness _. A. in the same way B. in different waysC. by working hard D. by taking drugs6. What does the underlined phrase “This thinking” refer to? A. The thinking of being promoted. B. The giving up of happiness.C. The process and journey of finding happiness. D. The misunderstanding of happiness.7. The writer strongly believes that happiness is _. A. a response B. a stimulus C. a great paying job D. an expensive car8. The purpose of the author in writing this passage is to _.A. tell people how to enjoy happiness B. encourage people to seek happinessC. express his attitude towards happiness D. criticize the wrong ideas about happinessVII. Proof reading Mike called his wife to tell him that he had got two film tickets. He asked her to go and meet him outside the theatre. Mikes wife is very glad because they hadnt seen a film for quite long time. She met her husband in the entrance to the cinema. Mike took out his wallet to get the tickets, so they were not there. He then tried his pockets, but the tickets were not there, too. Mike looked very worrying. “Whats the matter?” asked his wife. “Well,” Mike explained, “I remember that I did with them.
