Your boss tells you that you did a bad job. Your coworker criticizes you in front of your whole team. Ouch! Its not easy to take criticism, no matter who it comes from. But, it is easy to soften the blow when you offer criticism to someone in English. Merely by altering your wording and your attitude, you can help someone grow as opposed to making them feel defeated. Avoid direct accusationsPhrases like Youre wrong! and Your presentation was terrible! have no place in effective criticism. In fact, its best to leave the word you out, if at all possible. Personal attacks make people feel defensive, and then they wont really listen to anything you have to say. 及Your presentation was terrible! Soften with complimentsBefore starting with the criticism, warm the person up with compliments. If you are discussing their work, find several things you truly like about what they have done. For example, I enjoyed your presentation today. You presented a lot of good and helpful information in it, and I can tell you put a lot of effort into it. I appreciate your hard work. This will lower their defenses and make them feel appreciated. I enjoyed your presentation today. You presented a lot of good and helpful information in it, and I can tell you put a lot of effort into it. I appreciate your hard work. Dont continue with butHowever, a short, vague compliment followed by “but” such as It was a helpful talk, but you really need to improve your presentation skills wont do much to help the process. After youve shared your compliments, allow them time to be absorbed. Immediately following your compliment with a but will destroy all youve tried to accomplish by making your praise seem false and insincere. It was a helpful talk, but you really need to improve your presentation skills. Advise with adviceRemember that the goal of constructive criticism isnt to make the person feel terrible; its to help them grow. Instead of directly accusing the person, try to get the message through to them in the form of light-hearted advice. Phrases like, Next time you might want to ? or I find it helpful to ? can take away the blame while still leaving an impact: Next time you might want to give a little more attention to the audience. I find it helpful to look people in the eyes while I am speaking. Next time you might want to 或I find it helpful to Next time you might want to give a little more attention to the audience. I find it helpful to look people in the eyes while I am speaking.Stay specificPeople cant change overnight, especially if they dont get detailed direction. Simply saying you need to work on your presentation skills wont help a soul! Be detailed in your advice, and dont overload anyone with criticism. Remember, you want them to keep trying and improving. Dont leave them feeling defeated! 简单地说:you need to work on your presentation skills对于心灵将没有帮助! By experience, says Roger Ascham, we find out a short way by a long wandering. Not seldom that long wandering unfits us for further travel, and of what use is our experience to us then? Tess Durbeyfields experience was of this incapacitating kind. At last she had learned what to do; but who would now accept her doing? If before going to the dUrbervilles she had vigorously moved under the guidance of sundry gnomic texts and phrases known to her and to the world in general, no doubt she would never have been imposed on. But it had not been in Tesss powernor is it in anybodys powerto feel the whole truth of golden opinions while it is possible to profit by them. Sheand how many moremight have ironically said to God with Saint Augustine: Thou hast counselled a better course than Thou hast permitted. She remained at her fathers house during the winter months, plucking fowls, or cramming turkeys and geese, or making clothes for her sisters and brothers out of some finery which dUrberville had given her, and she had put by with contempt. Apply to him she would not. But she would often clasp her hands behind her head and muse when she was supposed to be working hard. She philosophically noted dates as they came past in the revolution of the year; the disastrous night of her undoing at Trantridge with its dark background of The Chase; also the dates of the babys birth and death; also her own birthday; and every other day individualized by incidents in which she had taken some share. She suddenly thought one afternoon, when looking in the glass at her fairness, that there was yet another date, of greater importance to her than those; that of her own death, when all these charms would had disappeared; a day which lay sly and unseen among all the other days of the year, giving no sign or sound when she annually passed over it; but not the less surely there. When was it? Why did she not feel the chill of each yearly encounter with such a cold relation? She had Jeremy Taylors thought that some time in the futu
