They will in a lifetime, push the chromeplated contraptions many miles. But few will know or even think to ask who it was that invented them.Sylvan N. Goldman invented the shopping cart in 1937. At that time he was in the supermarket business. Every day he would see shoppers lugging groceries around in baskets they had to carry. One day Goldman suddenly had the idea of putting baskets on wheels. The wheeled baskets would make shopping much easier for his customers, and would help to attract more business. On June 4, 1937, Goldmans first carts were ready for use in his market. He was terribly excited on the morning of that day as customers began arriving. He couldnt wait to see them using his invention. But Goldman was disappointed. Most shoppers gave the carts a long look, but hardly anybody would give them a try. After a while, Goldman decided to ask customers why they werent using his carts. “Dont you think this arm is strong enough to carry a shopping basket?” one shopper replied. But Goldman wasnt beaten yet. He knew his carts would be a great success if only he could persuade people to give them a try. So Goldman hired a group of people to push carts around his market and pretend they were shopping! Seeing this, the real customers gradually began copying the phony (假的) customers. As Goldman had hoped, the carts were soon attracting larger and larger numbers of customers to his market. But not only did more people come those who came bought more. With larger easiertohandle baskets, customers unconsciously bought a greater number of items than before.Todays shopping carts are five times larger than Goldmans original model. Perhaps thats one reason why Americans today spend more than five times as much money on food each year as they did before 1937 the coming of the shopping cart.21What was the purpose of Goldmans invention?A. It was to prove him to be a good inventor.BIt was to reduce the burden of his employees work.CIt was to make shopping easier and attract more business.DIt was to help the disabled make shopping easily in his market.22Goldman hired a group of people to push carts around his market in order to _.Aattract people to buy things in his marketBencourage people to use his shopping cartsCmake his market different from the othersDkeep the groceries from being stolen23What can we infer from the last paragraph?AGoldman will become very famous because of his invention.BGoldmans invention will be regarded as the greatest one in the world.CSupermarket business has benefited a lot from Goldmans invention.DThere will be nothing that can replace Goldmans invention.BAs a child, visiting the zoo was more a punishment than a treat. I didnt find the chimps tea parties funny, nor the bird shows entertaining. Feeding time for seals was less painful, but their performances still seemed like they belonged more in a circus. And I hated circuses, especially the animal acts men teasing lions, girls balancing on elephants and monkeys playing football. I knew that every trick a circus animal did was unnatural, achieved through strict training and quite possibly cruelty.Happily, during my lifetime public attitudes and the law have changed. Circuses using wild animals are now almost extinct, and zoos have definitely evolved. When my children were young, I occasionally took them to our local zoo. The elephants were in tiny cages and the gorillas looked bored as they sat peeling bananas and staring at teasing visitors. Each cage had a sign which listed the animals name and where it came from. But, back then, there was little information included about the environmental challenges they faced. As a result, environmentalists and animal lovers often oppose zoos. “Animals belong in the wild !” is a common and understandable complaint. But what do the animals themselves prefer?Generally speaking, zoo animals have a longer life. But you may protest they are not free. What? Free to be hunted and killed, free to die of hunger or thirst? Maybe sitting in a cage eating bananas isnt so bad.Not that such conditions are acceptable in modern zoos, due to the work of BIAZA, the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums. These days every zoo requires BIAZAs approval to operate, and the association sets the standards, observes conditions in zoos and develops animalresearch programmes, both in the UK and abroad. BIAZA also organizes the animal exchanges between zoos all over the world.Consequently, today, most zoo animals are born and raised in zoos, live in large, comfortable enclosures and are cared for by welltrained, knowledgeable and caring zoo employees. Of course its no substitute for living in the wild but unfortunately this isnt always possible. Meanwhile, why not visit your local zoo and decide for yourself?24.The passage is mainly about _.Ahow zoos have improvedBwhether a zoo should be closed downCa new environmental organizationDthe difference between zoos and circuses25From Paragraph 2, we can guess that the writer believes circus animals _.Ahad much shorter lives than those in the wildBwere not treated well by their trainersCshould have been placed in zoosDwere not as intelligent as those in zoos26Which of the following roles are performed by BIAZA?AOrganizing animal study projects and training zoo workers.BChecking zoo conditions and arranging animal exchanges.CDesigning zoos and approving zoo operations.DCaring for ill animals and setting zoo standards.27Which of the following statements about zoos would the writer agree with?AZoo animals should be freed into the wild.BZoos are more popular now than in the past.CZoo animals are more restricted than in the past.DZoos now provide caring living conditions for animals.CSocial networking sites have changed the way that people interact and connect on a daily basis. One of the major concerns that have caught the attention of many, is the influence that social media may be having on social anxiety disorders. If removed from their phone for a few hours or a few days, the average person would likely feel anxious about not being “connected.” Most people have probably experienced an occasion in which they posted a creative photo, and waited to see how many “likes” or “retweets” they received. If this number is lower than expected, the ego (自我) is going to take a hit. Theres also constant checking of the number of “followers” and “friends” that you have, and these numbers can have a direct influence on feelings of acceptance and popularity.Anxiety can arise from feeling at a loss when faced with too much going on at one time. Multitasking can very quickly lead to increased levels of anxiety. Most people can likely relate to feeling the constant need to check their phone while driving, during meals or at work. This desire is actually leading to increased levels of anxiety. The choice to be constantly connected leads to the feeling of having to always make yourself available.Social anxiety is much different from the anxiety one feels from being offline. Its a more serious type of anxiety resulting from the fear of being judged by others while in a social interaction. Cases can range from mild - and are often the cause of a lot of drinking with others - to severe, in which case a person may avoid parties and get-togethers altogether. The degree to which social media and technology are changing our lives and introducing new forms of anxiety is anything but deniable. The real question is to what extent they are introducing new disorders or increasing existing ones like social anxiety. Its certainly a topic worth studying more to determine who is being helped, who is being harmed and how social anxiety can be dealt with.28. Whats the major focus of the text?A. Human desire for social interaction.B. The influence of social media on anxiety.C. Anxiety resulting from interpersonal relationships.D. The popularity of social media in peoples daily life.29. According to the author, which of the following can lead to increased levels of anxiety?A. Not being available for get-togethers. B. Chatting on the phone with a friend.C. Dying to use the phone while driving. D. Eating meals alone.30. What does the underlined word “they” refer to?A. Life changes. B. Anxiety degrees. C. New forms of anxiety. D. Social media and technology.第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。Many scientists believe our love of sugar may actually be an addiction.
