For example, when I was 12, I went to Puerto Rico all by myself to stay with my grandmother for the summer. My mom was extremely nervous about it. She kept telling me how things were different in Puerto Rico, to always put on sunscreen, not to wander away from my grandmother, and other warnings. She helped me pack and did not leave the airport until she saw my plane take off. But despite her worries, she let me go on my own. As I moved into my teens, she continued to give me space to grow and learn, even when it might have been difficult for her. When I reached my senior year, I decided to move away for college. Once again I found that I differed from my peers. While many of them wanted to stay close to home, I couldnt wait to be out in the world on my own. While my mom may not have been happy at the thought of my going away, she was supportive and excited for me. One big thing I realized during my senior year, as my mom granted me more freedom, was that she actually believes in me and trusts me. That means a lot. Most of my life, and especially when I was little, the main person I tried to impress in my schoolwork or other things was my mother. I knew she expected nothing but the best from me. Sometimes it was hard to live up to her standards: getting a single B on my report card would make me feel bad because I knew she wanted me to have all As. I know that her high standards have helped me stay focused on whats important, like education, and made me who I am. I am thankful for her support and involvement in my life. Most of all I respect her. She is the strongest woman I know and thats why I have turned out so strong and independent.21. When the author decided to go to Puerto Rico, his mother_. A. wanted to go with him B. didnt allow him to do soC. worried about his safety D. asked his grandmother for advice22. Why did the author decide to move away for college? A. He wanted to be different from his peers.B. He planned to keep away from his mother.C. He intended to make his mother unhappy.D. He wanted to be independent in the outside world.23. We can learn from Paragraph 3 that the authors mother_. A. was too strict with him B. had a high expectation of himC. cared little about his learning D. used to expect nothing from him24. What does the author mainly want to tell us in the text?A. his mothers deep love for him B. his long way to become independentC. his good relationship with his mother D. the importance of his mothers trust and supportBFirst-born children do better in school and have higher IQs. They also tend to be considered more accomplished by their parents - and its being linked to the fact that they are brought up more strictly than their younger siblings (兄弟姐妹).The study found that 33.8 percent of mothers claimed their first-born is one of the best students in the class - and only 1.8 percent put their children at the bottom. With each successive (依次的) sibling, the former fell and the latter figure rose: More mothers consider their second or third born children less intelligent. Of the women surveyed, 31.8 percent said their second-born was one of the best students. Less than a third, 29 percent, said the same of their third, and 27.2 percent rated(评价) their fourth in the top.Conversely (相反地), the near the bottom of the class numbers rose: Two percent rated their second the worst, 2.1 the third and 3.6 the fourth. The mothers, who reported being stricter with their first children, are right, according to the NBER paper. Eldest children were found to have higher grades and test scores at school. According to the study, parents are more likely to bring up their first children strictly, while younger children are less likely to be punished if their marks are dire. The studys findings support the theory that school performance goes down with birth order. But could this be due to the way in which theyre treated by their parents? When asked how they would respond if a child brought home bad grades, parents stated that they would be less likely to punish their later-born children. It seems younger siblings dont feel the same parental pressure to succeed as their older brothers or sisters do - and so dont do quite as well academically.Study authors, V. Joseph Hots and Juan Pantano, found that parents pay more attention to the academic performance of first-borns; theyre also more likely to enforce strict rules and punishments. It could be the case that parents are more relaxed with their later-born children because they are exhausted from policing their first-borns behavior.25. Why do first-borns perform better in school?A. Because they work harder than their siblings. B. Because they are born with higher IQ.C. Because they get more care from teachers. D. Because they are brought up more strictly.26. The underlined word “dire” in paragraph 3 can be replaced by “ ”.A. excellentB. averageC. correctD. terrible27. It can be inferred that school performance .A. increases with birth order.B. will be weakened by parental pressureC. remains the same with birth orderD. will be increased by parental pressure 28. Why do parents give little pressure to their later-born children?A. Because the eldest can share the family burden.B. Because they focus too much on the eldest child.C. Because the eldest is the whole hope of the family.D. Because the eldest is an example for younger siblings.C If Confucius(孔子)were still alive today and could celebrate his September 28 birthday with a big cake, there would be a lot of candles. He would need a fan or a strong wind to help him put them out. While many people in China will remember Confucius on his special day, few people in the United States will give him a passing thought. Its nothing personal. Most Americans dont even remember the birthdays of their own national heroes. But this doesnt mean that Americans dont care about Confucius. In many ways he has become a bridge that foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper understanding of China. In the past two decades, the Chinese studies programs have gained huge popularity in Western universities. More recently, the Chinese government has set up Confucius Institutes in more than 80 countries. These schools teach both Chinese language and culture. The main courses of Chinese culture usually included Chinese art, history and philosophy(哲学). Some social scientists suggest that Westerners should take advantage of the ancient Chinese wisdom to make up for the drawbacks of Westerners philosophy. Students in the United States, at the same time, are racing to learn Chinese. So they will be ready for life in a world where China is an equal power with the United States. Businessmen who hope to make money in China are reading books about Confucius to understand their Chinese customers. So the old thinkers ideas are still alive and well. Today China attracts the West more than ever, and it will need more teachers to introduce Confucius and Chinese culture to the West. As for the old thinker, he will not soon be forgotten by people in the West, even if his birthday is. 29. The opening paragraph is mainly intended to _.A. provide some key facts about Confucius B. show great respect for the ancient thinkerC. attract the readers interest in the subject D. prove the popularity of modern birthday celebrations30. We can learn from Paragraph 4 that American students_.A. fight for a chance to learn Chinese B. take an active part in Chinese competitionsC. try to get high scores in Chinese examsD. have a great interest in studying Chinese31.
